Title: Going standalone
Post by: Brighton-Rex on January 10, 2010, 01:44:08 PM
Hey people,

I am soon going to be investing in a standalone ECU for my 92 FD and am just checking out my options....

I know Re-worx could supply and map the HKS Fcon Pro for about £1400 but alot of people seem to prefer the Apexi PFC.

Is the Apexi PFC still available? I have seen it on the Newera website and direct from Apexi but thats about it (£700 plus shipping etc so would cost about same as HKS time it is mapped etc)

What sort of price would i be looking at for an Apexi PFC if i do track one down? None on eBay etc that i can see either.

I don\'t plan anything too major in the way of tuning but will be sorting some breathing mods and decat etc once ECU is set-up etc

Any advice would be much appreciated :D

Ta!

The Apexis come up occasionally. Haven\'t seen many around recently - more wanteds than for sales.  Last few that were around were going for about £4-500.

Try nengun. I paid £480 for a PFC last April, and mapping was about £300.

The pfc will work out alot cheaper also more people map them. But the hks unit has a higher resolution fore fuel & ignition maps.

I agree with what Timmy says, the PFC is the common upgrade on FDs, so most tuning places are ok with it, I personally don\'t like them, which is ok as there isn\'t a PFC created just for the FC (well there is, but its a backwards engineered FD on to bolt onto an FC) so im running an e-manage ultimate, which can tune itself.

Another route you could try is the Microtech, the Microtech and the E-manage Ultimate allow for much finer tuning of the map, but if you are just going with basic mods with a stock setup, a PFC is probably best :)

lol cmon Mitch you know better then that you make it sound the Apexi is a basic ECU, a megasquirt is a basic ecu lol.

The Apexi ECU is very good and has as much resolution as the E-Manage and Microtech and is on par, I think its better then the emanage personally as emanage is a piggy back ECU on the FD as the original ECU is still needed to run the OMP,fuel pump etc.

Also the Apexi has all the Twin Turbo features required if sticking to twins.
The Apexi can deal with a huge amount of mods, eg Dragons drag car.

Yes the HKS has better resolution and is better for a smoother map.

Cheers people, i am tempted to just go for the PFC as i think this will be more than capable of anything i am likely to throw at it, but spoke to Reworx earlier and they mentioned Motec M2r aswell, works out about the same price as HKS. Not sure if i need something quite that clever for my plans for car though......... but defo tempting lol

Has anybody used the LinkECU G4 ? Some interesting stuff with the Extreme good for 4 rotor setups.

I Think Tim @ rxmotors is going to be using it this year on his drag car.

Was looking at it for LPG setup because of the extra functions with up to 6D mapping so would allow for fuel pressure to have a full adjustment map too.

I think the e-manage ultimate can map for different fuels and adjustments as well :) it can even tune the map itself to meet a certain A/F target :)

Anything from 290 to 330 bhp I would say, depending on the state of your fuel system, cooling, and how close to the edge your tuner is willing to go. Oh, and which dyno they use and what factor they choose to multiply wheel power by to get flywheel power!

the best thing i love about the pfc is the commander, its got so many features and you can monitor so much, if you had to get gauges to cover a few things that it comes with it would be expensive

Will post some stats once sorted.
