Title: Gen 1 Engine removal
Post by: sadgoth on May 07, 2004, 01:53:33 PM
Been contemplating a second Gen 1, which may need engine work soon. How easy it is to remove engine & gearbox, can they be removed in one section maybe from below or do the crossmembers get in the way? It would be preferable to drop the whole engine and transmission in one rather than mess about with gearbox removal and clutch... blahblahblah

I know a lot of the Gen II owners have done engine removals but not sure on the Gen 1

i managed to drop the engine out of the bottom of my parts car ... only took a few hours and I\'d never done one before. I\'d recommend an engine crane though and then I\'m pretty sure engine and box will come out as one + its much easier and less likely to damage anything.

If you want to take the engine and gearbox out as one you may need the car a little way off the ground as the back of the gbox might hit the floor as you lift the front of the engine to clear the front of the car.  Personally, i prefer to split the two as it is only 6 bolts. Every thing is a lot more managable. The engine comes out of a first gen sooooo easily especially compared to a FD
