Title: Turbo beanie/sheilding
Post by: Ada7 on January 06, 2010, 10:08:14 AM
I\'ve been thinking about all the sheilding i\'m gonna have to do from my new trubo set up. Dont really like the idea of lots of random bits of hose over the cables and was wondering about getting a turbo beanie.
Would this be enough along side some sheilding on the LIM and underside of the plenum?
Have seen this on ebay

Just wanting some feedback on what people have done and found. Thanks :D

Deffo a good idea, but, and this is ridiculous, I\'m not going for one because they\'re so pig ugly :o

Keep the heat and energy in, keep your bay cooler,  and help spool - however, the downside is that all that heat will stay in the pipes for longer, so may take it\'s toll on manifolds, etc.

As an aside, a fully insulated system will yield you flames the likes of which you have never seen :D

I\'ve heat wrapped my manifold and will be doing the downpipe too.
Will the beanie be enough to stop the heat melting cables, conections and bonnet cable etc??

ive had two on my car in the past......I decided to junk it when i got my gk.

Two reasons...
1. greddy didnt offer one for it so i asked myself why!
2. i worry about egt\'s...and depending where you mount your probe...this maynot help with accuracy...

Hmm.. good points Ed thanks.
I know some track racers have them on their cars. They must build up huge amount of heat compared to say me pottering around town and the occasional drag run

I would thermal shield the LIM with this stuff

Looks ok stuff but says not to put straight on to manifolds. Would the intake be classed the same?

I was thinking on getting a beanie, but its just easier to put some ceramic paint on the manifold, most of the heat is held in the turbo so just shield that off :) im in the same boat as you regarding going round town/occasional drag runs, I guess that a cold air feed could be ducted round that area, but I think a heat shield will suffice :) Or just run E85 :D

I\'ve got one of those metal sheild to go over the rear housing but no that\'ll never be enough.

You can use the ceramic paint on the turbo housing as well :)

Can you get that kind of paint anywhere?

They mean exhaust manifolds, intake manifolds are fine, I use similar stuff on my LIM

So i could use that in the LIM and underside of the plenum and then decide on a beanie

yip. The only downside of a Beanie is because it keeps the heat in the exhaust turbine housing it may cause the housing the warp if it gets to hot, have seen it happen a few times from threads on the interweb

I\'ll cut a few holes in it then to let out a little heat :rollin

Also be careful if you get a turbo beanie and your turbo is ball bearing, they are ok if the EGT isn\'t too bad ie with a piston engine, but they can fry ball bearing turbos, which is why I nabbed a T88 as its journal bearing :)
