Title: High power engines - best air filter
Post by: m1tch on January 03, 2010, 09:32:17 PM
Hi guys, I have asked about this a bit back and I changed my air filter for the HUGE RE-A filter which has stupidly high flow, but my T88 has a 100mm/4" inlet, so the RE-A filter will be restrictive :(

I know I can get a HKS mushroom at 100mms, what are the other options? I have seen a HUGE 100mm pipercross cone, I will be able to run Oil or dry filters as I won\'t have an AFM or hotwire, it will bolt right onto the turbo.

Anyone able to help?

My personal experience of Pipercross is that they don\'t really have great flow rate, but they do have well-made products and really helpful backup for problems, which would make them less than ideal in your application.

I don\'t like HKS mushrooms because of the ease of ending up with a gap of unfiltered air round the edge of the foam, especially if you let it get dirty so the flow rate drops. The engine will then suck the foam away from the edges of the cage, leaving a gap for ugly stuff to get in. With that said, many people with high power engines swear by them although I think a lot of their appeal is down to the fact they\'re quite flat so can be used where space is tight.

Why not look at K&N? They do generic cone filters in just about any size or aperture you\'d ever want

I don\'t like the HKS ones, but if you oil them then it doesn\'t disintergrate lol

Not really a fan of the Ken and Norm filters to be fair, ITG are good, but quite a bit :(

Do Apexi do a 100mm one as that was found to be one of the best filters in the tests I have found.

ask james to make a custom 100mm inlet that fits 2 cones..

Hmm good plan lol :) or I could just run it like this TR6 has it for drag:

Looks odd with the filter:

Should I mount it in the engine bay or above it? to put some perspective on the size of the turbo, it is about the same size as a rotor housing :Giggle

Nowt wrong with K&N at all, prob what I will be using on my 35r with a 4" inlet. Cheap too, if you get the generic ones, as opposed to a \'kit\'.

Mst of the stuff about oiled filters damaging MAF\'s is internet folklore stemming from halfits massively over-oiling filters when cleaning them :)

The hks foam replacements are cheap as chips so i just replace mine every year.

HKS have been shown to be a bit crap at filtering unfortuantely :(

Interesting reading here:

Although obviously open to bias - there\'s another one somewhere else with similar results, just trying to find it...

Another thumbs up for ITG filters.  One of the best in my opinion.

Yeah thats the test I found a while back when I was looking for good filters, which is why I liked the Apexi :)

How much would an ITG cost? would it be better to run 2 smaller ones?

Not too bad if you ask me.

Nice :) thanks for that link! I will have a look around, I will have a cold air box made up, so heat soak won\'t be an issue, just need to work out whats best, single or twin filters.

Thanks for that :)

I need to weigh up the options between:

Ken and Norm filter above
ITG filter
2 smaller filters

There\'s nothing wrong with the K&N in the slightest. It\'s what I\'m likely to use. Unless my JDM fanboi gland takes hold and I feel forced to buy an Apexi (if I can find one with a 4" inlet)

Reading though the RX7 site its suggested to get the longest filter you can fit, so I will probably go for a K & N in a custom made cool box connected to the turbo with a 4" OD pipe, apparently the end of the filter starts to get sucked in at 18psi...would have other things on my mind at 18psi with a T88 lol

The end of the filter will only get sucked in at 18psi if 18psi worth of air on that particular turbo is too much for that particular air filter to flow - it\'s not as simple as \'x\' boost unfortunately.

I\'ve just looked into these...

Think they\'re good for over 200bhp each.

sorry mate didnt read that you were running a single turbo, this filter is not suitable for a single
