hey all i\'ve been looking at making myself some 99 spec rear lights but wanted something abit different. after looking at a few ideas i came up with what you see below. i\'ve only done one so far but should have the other side done in a month or so. all comments welcome

look good lad..
very nice work chap!
Great work!!! I was thinking in doing something similar...
It\'s a bitch of a job isn\'t it!! LOL
Looking good though matey!
just abit tedious!
I think I saw a set of these sell on Dragon performance, looks simular :)
Awesome. Really nice work :)
Came out good ;)
Excellent work. I\'d be very interested to see how you\'ve done it!
Please :D
its like spagetti junction, didn\'t take any pictures of the wiring, but it does take much to do it your self. main thing is just to take your time and measure, mark, pilot and drill everything properly. i\'ve done the other light now, so will get some pics up once i\'ve fitted it this weekend.
They came out really nice.
What size LED\'s did you use?
they look like 5mm dome top LED\'s?
we need a decent write-up on this :-D Bring it on :-)
I thought they were 10mm\'s
very impressive :D great work! :)
nope they are 5mm dome leds. when i get some free time this week i\'ll do a little write up. oh and i\'ve buggered up abit as there is a slight difference between the two but its not that noticable.
VERY interested!!
right, my original idea was to combine the nismo stlye lights on an r34 and the 99 spec rx7 ones. i drew a few diagrams before deciding on what you see above. the diameter of the brake lights are 70mm and the indicator 60mm. after a couple of hours of carefull marking out i drilled some 2mm pilot holes, the widened to 5mm

once both were done, sprayed the lenses satin black. and then wire up the leds with the help of alot of solder and crimp connectors.

then modify the existing loom for the lights, including adding a 200 resistor to the side lights wire to reduce the brightness abit. also load resistor were fitted to the indicators to stop the from flashing too fast. and you have the finished result. also after failing with a hair dryer on a previous attempt, it is advisable to use the correct tools i.e a heat gun to seperate the lights, makes the job so much easier.
i\'ll get some decent pics soon, just need to give the car a dam good clean!

"ROFL" - ain\'t that always the way!!
can you elaborate abit more on the electrical/technical side.
I\'m an electric noob so something schematic would be great :-)
Many thanks and great job!

I used a bucket of very hot water and left the lights in that until they got soft, and just pulled them apart (very gently mind), took one side off, dropped them in the bucket and by the time i\'d got the 2nd side off the 1st was nearly ready.

+1, hot water FTW! A heat gun\'s great if you want to clean out all the sticky clag once they\'re separated, but I find it too aggressive and localised a heat for the actual separation process.
Hot water and a couple of thin tyre levers/long screwdrivers plus loads of patience is the way forward :Thumbs-up

thats how i broke the first light, by prying it. heat gun constantly moving all the way round the rim, 4-5mins later just pulls apart with your fingers. plus you can get a heat gun these days for a couple pounds.
um well i bought my leds off ebay and to save myself loads of work i bought them pre-wired with resistors for 12v. its simple really as you are joining several wires to one them to the original loom. it also depends which leds you want for side lights and which for brake lights.
You took the easy way out!!! Should have gone for the full on solder yourself like I did ;) then you know whay patience is! LOL
Jono
you sir have the patience of a saint!:King
i\'ll stick to the easy way
do you have a diagram of how to connect the led\'s to the normal loom?
nope but, the brown wire is the side light live, the green the brake live, the green and red i think is the indicator live and the black is the earth. so all the negatives go together to the black, with you choosing which leds you want for the side light, brake etc. i would advise using and extra resistor in the side light wire to reduce the brightness so that people won\'t confuse it with the brake light. i used around a 200ohms one i think.......
okay thanks mate, can you put up some links of what resistors you used for the tail lights and indicators?
thanks
steven
ah also, how many led\'s have you gone through in total?
i got a pack of resistors from maplin
http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=42453
something like those. think each red circle is 73 leds, and the orange is 49, so thats just below 200 per light unit. if you used 10mm leds instead of 5mm led you could use alot less.
okay thanks mate, are those the ones you used as in the "200 and load resistors" to stop them flashing so fast?
ah yes the load resistors to slow the flashing rate are different
these ones

I just got mine from the same company but I would say to anyone doing the led conversion is to use one load resistor for every indicator lamp being converted so you need 2x for Rear, 2x for Front and if you are like me 2x for Sides.
