Happy new year to everyone:wiggle
i am new to this forum,
recently purchased an Fd with the intention of doing an LS2 conversion,
i have never driven a rotary powered car before so dont even know what one should sound like.
the FD i purchesed was as a non runner, the owner said it just cut out on him and he had not been able to start it since,he said he done a comp test, new plugs, easy start no joy.
He delivered it to me on a trailer, put a cheap jump starter pack on it,cranked it,it turned slow and didnt fire.pushed the car on my drive.
went to halfrauds, purchased new battery, turned it over fires up,lots of smoke for 2mins,sort of idles but missfires when reved.
let it warm up a bit ,reved better .
it now starts all the time, its a bit smokey,i think its missfiring a bit, drove it jus to end of the road and back(no tax or ins) flored it i felt some boost but lag and sort of missfire, not enough road to test both turbos working.also its got a sluch box.
could it be running on one rotor? just blown,
what test should i do?
I can make a vid of it running if it helps
Dnt kno alot about them mate but I do no wen they start up there\'s always abit of smoke n the engine does sound ruff till it\'s warmed up, it might of been missfire\'n because where you tried to turn it over b4 n it didn\'t start u wud of flooded it as they chuck loads of fuel in wen trying to start up, keep an eye on the coolent fluid level n if I was you I wud do an oil n spark plug change to make sure it\'s all clean cause they do go thru oil alot n once u have flooded the engine the plugs need changing, wats the mileage on the car n has the engine been rebuilt?
thanks for the reply,
120,000 kilometers, dont know if its been rebuilt,
coolent level is full,a bit brown on onside of cap,
what was the result of the compression test? 5 is bad, 8 is newly rebuilt.
if its not been rebuilt, then chances are the compression would be rather low as fd engines need rebuild around 60k-80k miles depending on how much power its been pushing.
simple check to see if a tip has gone is take one spark plug out front housing, take out egi fuse and turn it over and listen to see if the pulse are even. then replace sparkplug and repeat on the rear housing.
while your there, check condition of plugs.
what kinda of smoke are you getting?
best get a vid up as a picture (vid) paints a million words lol
depending where about in london you are, there are a few tuners / people with good rotary know / mobile rotary mechanic how who can help.
You need to do a comp test really first see if it\'s ok. You could use a normal piston engine tester but not ideal cos you don\'t know engine speed. If you want to know if engine is good so you can sell it why not pay for proper rotary comp test. You got 2 options on that you can either take it to nearest place prob rotechnics or have someone like jit come out and do mobile test.

Hopefully the engine was up to temperature before you \'floored it\' else you would have damaged the engine even more....
Yes i warmed it up before giving it some,
heres a vid of a frosty cold start, jus about to upload a vid of a blip of throttle, the car is prolly still cold in the second vid that should appear soon on my photobucket.
thanks,

sounds like its running on both - compression test is ur first port of call mate cos it might be chipped tip or something thats causing misfire
Thanks for the reply,
jus realized the battert termials where loose when i test drove it.
Seems to be quite smokey,
how much should i pay for a comptest?
dont matter bout battery terminals cos it runs off alternator once started
depends - u can get it trailored to some where like reworx (02392698100) and they charge 25 for the test. Or get a mobile one done off jit for 60 inc call out - he done mine and stus so done it a few times - give him a tinkle 07947212298
Thanks for the replys
so does it sound like its firing properly?
as i said the guy i got it from could not get it started and that he had done a comp test and said it was 8\'s,but it would just not start.
I was very suprised when it started with just a new battery.
I think i should check the basics, make sure he didnt put a plug lead on wrong or cause an air leak.
what do you guys think about the smoking ?
im gona check the intake for oil from turbos,
the guy gave me 2 extra sets of turbos with the car,
would a comp test tell me if the center oil seal is leaking?
doubt its leads
airleak wont cause misfire like that
smoking could be anything....excess oil in intercooler pipes will point to turbo
comp test will tell u if ur engine is cream crackered or not and if ur wasting your time - first port of call IM. Once u know engines goood then u can look for ancillaries
get jit to do your comp test mate.....then go from there!!!!
