Title: FREE 1986 mazda rx7 non turbo
Post by: geoffhughes1986 on December 30, 2009, 11:05:19 PM
Hello folks,

When i was a kid my nextdoor neighbour had a red 1986 non-turbo rx7.
At the time he had a lot of work done on body repairs like door skins and the engine was rebuilt.
In time I moved house, and my neighbour moved abroad and left the car with his father. For the next few years it was looked after by his father and mot\'ed and garaged.
After about 5 years the father gave up looking after the car and plonked it on the driveway.
It has been sat there for another 6-8 years, maybe more, and it has now been partially consumed by an ivy bush!:Hammer It hasnt been started up or moved for at least 6-8 years, but the tyres still seem to have stayed up and it still looks fairly clean, although i have not had a good look at the car.
My old neighbour has since come back, got married and had kids. I asked him about the car and he offered it me for free! However he said if i ever flog it that he would want half the money..... :reallymad
He may change his mind and let me have it no strings attached though as i think everyone in his family is sick of watching it rot away.

I was wondering if you guys can give any advice about the car and, what is going to be knackered on it and if it will be worth bothering with!
I\'m heavily into my v8 stuff and dont have a clue about ....el engines apart from how they work!:3Confused

Geoff

Theres a good chance the engine may well have ceased by now, i\'m not expert but its very important how you first crank it back up as you need to make sure all parts are lubricated and able to move before attempting any start up procedure.

Hi Geoff and first of all welcome to Mazdarotaryclub,

Going from experiance providing the engine turns over o/k gently by hand then chances are it will be fine, go for it :Viking

Hi Geoff,
First of all 1986 was the year of two models, the 1st Generation (dart shape) was still on sale and the 2nd Generation (bit like a Porsche) had come into the dealers. A picture of a 1st gen is attached; is it like that?
As regards the engine, I run a 1st Gen where the car had not run from new for 8 years (albeit in a sheeted over wharehouse). I bought the car and the engine has done 53,000 miles since without missing a beat. The rotary seems to take having the engine stood whereas piston engines won\'t have it.

:WaveBye Thanks for the replies,

The car is a Porsche shaped version, it looks exactly like this colour etc, but has a black foamy spoiler and the wheels are different. It has a turbo bonnet even though its not a turbo.
I drove past it yesterday and it still looks clean bar the leaves on it and it mostly consumed by the hedge and the tyres are still up! owner said it had only done 12,000 on the rebuilt engine it had in.
It did have a problem though when it was in use, apparently when hot it was a bitch to start. Any ideas??

water seals are shot in that case! that is the usual hot start symptoms! so by the sounds of it it would need a refresh!

refresh would cost about 2k - 2.5k i\'d imagine as its n/a then its cheaper than turbo rebuilds.

Gees that much? how much would a used engine cost? if its gonna be that much to get it running, let alone get it roadworthy, then things aren\'t looking good!:2Confused

Jono

poor hot starting is lack of compression, not water seals in my experience

If it is hard to start when hot then usually low compression is the reason, but a good srvice might help.
If egnine is shot have a good used for the 2nd gen EGI £650.00

Hey folks! Ive been back home this weekend, and i got a shot of the rx7. I think there are mice living in it now.

Body still looks ok at a glance. Still not sure what he is gonna do with it, but by the sounds he is reluctant to let it go for free now.

I\'d check the floor for rot before thinking of engines..
