So, having got the first gen on the road as a bit of a weekend noisy rat, it\'s time to start playing with the FD...
My wife has got me an engine hoist for xmas, so it\'s going to be a case of stripping down the engine ready for removal. So far, the turbo pack is off, the UIM, LIM and bits & pieces are out.
The original idea was to refresh the engine, but this is starting to become a bit more of an attempt to have a nice, smooth, tidy GT cruiser type. So a nice interior, a bit of cash spent on the paint, single GT35/40 turbo, V-mount or front mount, and ideally quiet and smooth. As a nice cruiser, it will be retaining stereo, aircon, friendly suspension and bushes.
so any hints for suspension, bushes, and how to make a GT35 audibly smooth while retaining power, it\'s all more than welcome!!
Nice work in getting that all off mate. When i got my engine out i just undone all the loom and lifted it all out as a whole thing (minus gearbox) and then stripped it down. Was so easy to get everything off that way :D
Plus one of the lifting points is on the UIM :p

About time :Giggle
Quote from: Archbish;660591My wife has got me an engine hoist for xmas
Wow! I don\'t think my wife even knows what an engine hoist actually
is, let alone is ever likely in a million years to buy me one for xmas  [/slightly jealous]
yup, I\'ve no doubt that lifting the whole lot out and working on it then would be easier, but then I\'ll have to wait til xmas day before getting stuck in. I couldn\'t wait...
And she didn\'t until I told her what I wanted - but it\'s now sitting in the hallway (in the box) with a bow on it...
am FREEEEEEEEZING as a result, but tis very satisfying!!
bish sell me the gt35 then you ll have peace and quiet >:P
:D I see... Gotta buy the damned thing first - appreciate your selfless offer tho dude, thanks!! *grin*
im ready sniff i ll take one for the team
so finally got round to getting the engine broken down, and found that the rotors, housing and plates all look to be good. Very good. stupidly so.
"Odd", methinks, "it wouldn\'t start for anything, yet it all looks OK".
However, I have found the bit below looks like it\'s fubar\'d:
now I haven\'t looked into what this bit is, and why this would stop an engine working. However, everything else is shiny and good (just needs a bloody good clean. The housings look too good, if anything! The rear rotorseals are a bit sticky, but freed up easily enough.
Any thoughts??
((other than, well while it\'s out, lets go get a 1/2 bridge...))
Is that the bearing in the rear iron stationary gear ?
Looks like it spun. It\'s replaceable at least - so that \'s good news ;)
Everything look good under the front cover (Torrington bearings, front bearing and so on) ?
Yup, everything else looks too good. Til I saw that, I assumed everything was fine and I\'d broken a perfectly good engine. Slight scoring on the shaft - reckon it needs replacing?
As the Prof says - the bearing has spun.
Any damage on the shaft?
yeah, slight pitting in places - does that mean it\'s dead?
Not sure how much you can get away with on the e-shaft - certainly the parts of it that spin in the bearings needs to be in good order. I am guessing if you have that damage on the bearing - it may have started to wear on the shaft, but the bearing inserts are a lot softer.
Any sign that it \'s had oil starvation?
and such a sign would be.... ((i\'ve not done an engine of any kind before. Like "it looks like it spun a bearing" gets a reaction of "Oh, good. They\'re supposed to spin".... Turns out a spun bearing is bad!))
There are oil pathways that guide the oil onto the bearing centre - that\'s the holes you see in the centre - obviously in the ideal world the shaft spins inside the fixed bearing on a film of oil. If the oil pathway got blocked, or pickup failed for a prolonged period (low oil level, or doing the wall of death maybe ;) ), then the oil flow to the bearing may have stopped, causing the shaft to grip on the bearing and pull it around with it. But you may see signs of discolouration elsewhere - indicating heating maybe ?
Gotcha. Another thought from a certain builder is the conversion from auto to manual could be the root cause - if the engine wasn\'t balanced, it could cause it to go out of whack...
Hi Bish,
The Mazda cast iron flywheels are balanced with the original engines, but also high rpm or low oil in the sump combined with high G cornering could start that problem.
What oil were you using?
Regards
Carl
Check out the rotary resurection site as well - he\'s got examples of damage, and the likely causes of them - an excellent site for showing what can happen !
Although no pics of spun bearings
This is what happened to someone when a front thrust bearing failed -
http://www.aaroncake.net/rx-7/damage.htm
I guess all your bearings are good at the front of the engine ?
Quote from: HaywardRotary;700556What oil were you using?
Thanks for the reply chief. Halfords Mineral oil - same as for the previous 5 years... It was at (high) motorway speeds in france. Temps started to rise VERY quickly, and when keyed off, the engine cut out straight away.
Quote from: Prof;700558I guess all your bearings are good at the front of the engine ?
I don\'t remember them looking bad, but in strip down, the torringtons and everything looked good. I\'m going to clean it all this week, and see what it\'s like when clean, grease free, and dry.
talking of which - what liquid to use in my parts washer that I got xmas before last and never unwrapped? Would Petrol be OK as a degreaser?
I used that Comma Hyperclean - that stuff is good - really gets the oil, looser carbon and general crud off easily
Cool, thanks!
Quick question - what is it with the different sized 13btt stationary bearings??? From Mazdatrix (http://www.mazdatrix.com/b4.htm):
Main Bearings For 93-95 Twin Turbo
Part Number Color Code Bearing Thickness
10-E040-NF01 Yellow 1.980mm = .07795"
10-E050-NF01 Green 1.983mm = .07807"
10-E060-NF01 Brown 1.986mm = .07819"
10-E070-NF01 Black 1.989mm = .07831"
10-E080-NF01 Blue 1.992mm = .07846"
10-E220-NF01 Yellow 1.988mm = .07827"
10-E230-NF01 Green 1.991mm = .07839"
10-E240-NF01 Brown 1.994mm = .07850"
10-E250-NF01 Black 1.997mm = .07862"
10-E260-NF01 Blue 2.000mm = .07874"
Thickest is .07874" (least clearance) minus thinest of .07795" = .00079 TOTAL range --- This is LESS than ONE thou !
Can someone help here? I\'m replacing an eshaft into a pre-existing stationary gear - howdo I measure 0.02 mm difference?
Quote from: Archbish;700639- howdo I measure 0.02 mm difference?
ya penis doubled mate lol sorry couldnt resist:spank
Dial Gauge, or micrometer, but it\'s curved isn\'t it, so not sure how easy that would be ?
Quote from: battyman;700654ya penis doubled mate lol sorry couldnt resist:spank
Well, it was big enough to make your eyes water... :D
Quote from: Prof;700662Dial Gauge, or micrometer, but it\'s curved isn\'t it, so not sure how easy that would be ?
okey chokey... this\'ll be an interesting challenge *grin*
on a shaft that is used but in good condition generally this one will suit, but measure to be sure.
10-E230-NF01 Green 1.991mm = .07839"

so here\'s the bearing after being removed with a rudimentary drift...

so I would guess this is probably not good.... *grin*
and here\'s the shaft:

Thoughts????
fecked ? :2eek
Quote from: Prof;701463fecked ? :2eek
yup and then some
right, so shiny new eshaft, measured up in several places, along with the stationary gear (sans bearing).
- EShaft av diameter is 42.92
- Gear av diameter is 47.02
so to get clearances for different bearings is:
(Gear dia - eshaft dia)/2 - bearing width, right?
so that gives us these clearances:
eshaft, stationary gear, bearing thickness, clearance
42.92, 47.02, 2, 0.05
42.92, 47.02, 1.998, 0.052
42.92, 47.02, 1.997, 0.053
42.92, 47.02, 1.994, 0.056
42.92, 47.02, 1.992, 0.058
42.92, 47.02, 1.991, 0.059 <- Carl\'s suggestion
42.92, 47.02, 1.989, 0.061 <-within tol
42.92, 47.02, 1.986, 0.064 <-within tol
42.92, 47.02, 1.983, 0.067 <-within tol
42.92, 47.02, 1.98, 0.07 <-within tol
Thoughts?? (other than vBulletin is .... at tables)
This may help, the bearings are color coded
1.98mm Yellow
1.983mm Green
1.986mm Brown
1.989mm Black
1.992mm Blue
1.988mm Yellow
1.991mm Green
1.994mm Brown
1.997mm Black
2.00mm Blue

so starting to do bits and pieces - thanks to Era for advice, guidance, and general patience with the engine bits.

got to spend time on the rest of it, but that will have to wait til another day...
pretty pleased, couple of nicks, needs flatting and polishing, but not bad for someone who does computers... :D
so in the slowest engine build ever, we\'re slowly getting there. Problem is blanking plates and getting bits as I go, plus wee man being awesome...

Bit different to the norm - nothing shiny...
Righto, so what with life and all getting in the way of important rotary and car stuff, I\'ve finally given up trying to do it and have started shipping it off to have stuff done.
Paintwork completed...

Good to see your former show winning car back in fine fettle and looking real good.:chat
Thanks Clive - looking forward to getting it back on the road. I think it\'s been off for about 5 years...!! Going T78 this time... :)

Looking real good Bish man
Looking great - bit of a change form the ossum purple.
thanks chaps! :) Very keen to get it back on the road - treat to myself for a promotion at work...! (that, and I want my wee ones to grow up with cool cars in the family)
Fast forward a year...
