Allright guys
This is my missus\'s car - she bought it about a year ago from a gent in clapham, south london.
Its a 1974 mazda 1000 (CC) FA3TS. This is about 2 inches wider than the original STB 1200 and 1300 models. It came with a piston engine of...suprise suprise....1000cc.
The car is really clean, but needs a tidy - and to get rid of the underseal underneath it!
Pics when we got her -

the engine ran well, but the carb was playing up. electrics played silly buggers too.
So we took the engine out -

and purchased a motor, gearbox, and carb etc from a E_X_I_L_E_R. This was sold as a strong engine, bridgeported and rebuilt within the last 4 years (as the builder had only been in the country 5) and a premium was consequently paid. Bear in mind you can buy 12a NA engines for £50 all day on ebay or elsewhere.
Carl Hayward sourced a rx3 crossmember for me which i hoped would allow us to front mount the engine on stock mounts.
I shot blasted the crossmember, slotted the holes, and it bolted beneath the sway bar mounts on the chassis rails - lovely

you will also notice we ground off the existing piston engine mounts from the banana shapped crossmember to clear the \'little ripper\' of a rotorshed motor.
Trial fitting the engine and gearbox, we soon noticed two things -
1. the sump \'bulge\' fouled heavily on the crossmember.
2. the shifter would be moved around 20cm to the rear.
We decided to first of all, reverse the sump. To do this, we used a 13b oil pickup, which we lengthened by tig welding in a short length of pipe -
(http://i387.photobucket.com/albums/oo311/saxgod91/mazda%201000/DSC00324.jpg)
to ensure a good seal, it was sealed with liquid metal
-

Using the gaset, I redrilled the end holes of the sump (at the front and rear of the sump) and welded closed the holes no longer required.

ta daa. reversed sump!
Second off, we shortened the Gear shifter position.

steve
with the sump reversed and the shifter position shortened, we trial fitted the engine
(http://i387.photobucket.com/albums/oo311/saxgod91/mazda%201000/DSC00333.jpg)
it need clearancing in 3 ways-
A small adapter plate to move the gearbox crossmember forward was required
The tunnel need minor clearancing around the clutch slave cylinder
The crossmember needed \'notching\' to clear the sump

mounting the engine and box like this may mean quite high prop shaft angles!
Very minor notching of the shift hole was needed -

next up, was to make a radiator for it. Firstly, a universal rad of the rough approx dimensions was sourced from the e of gay. The fan was trial fitted.
Then i ali-welded on some side mounts to hold it all in place.

Next up, a tube was welded in place with a filler/pressure cap, into the top hose.

the bottom hose was modded, and a return for the heater hose welded in place.
finally, we turned attention to the exhaust. We turned This:

We bought aweber - sorted the wiring, gave her some fluids, and whizzed it over -

To find the honest, well oiled, maintained and turned over weekly engine had a stuck apex seal. See my last thread to find out the issues found with the build. So thats where we are at at the moment. Engine rebuild, engine on the floor ready for it (to be done PROPERLY), a decent tune and its MOT able!
The engine rebuild has really hindered things, but hopefully this little oldschooler will be on the road in the near future :)
Thats awesome :D and the engine size has only increased by 30% :D
Well done and please keep the pictures coming, be good to see this at The Spring Rotor Show :cheers
Good progress there Steve. How is up norff? And suzies freinds
thanks guys. Will keep the pictures coming.
Old engine bits - mostly unuseable apart from oil pump, end housings, rotors (i think) flywheel, drive gear, stationary gears and eccentric shaft.

Awesome work stevo!!! Wish I had bought it and I\'d the same :)
Sorry forgot to mention 12at helped me loads throughout! Pics of yours back home on here for inspiration?
some real nice work there :D
Like Clive says are we going to see this car at RS ?
ye be good to see the car and of course YOU dubber at rotorstock :Giggle

whats that supposed to mean? :driving
i may be wrong but this thread seems to have direct digs at a certian engine porter and builder that have already been addressed via your previous thread, which has now been locked. had you just posted up your development and progress on this project then i and dare say everyone else who commented on your previous thread wouldnt have a problem, the issues with this engine have already been addressed and in mine and many others eyes a conclusion has been reached. i suggest its just left there :WaveBye
im actually asking for opinion upon which parts may be reuseable, or for the reason for the blow-by. The engine build is now going to be a crucial stage in the build of this vehicle - although it was never planned - and as such \'before\' and \'after\' pictures are justified.
When i rebuild the engine over the christmas period, I will be documenting the rebuild, for my own sake as well as any other interested parties.
i would guess the blowby is caused by the side seals have been stuck due to sitting or not being used for a while. the apex seal looks to be broken to me (the other seals in the pic appear to be in one peice). if i recall mazda 2 piece seals have two notches for the helper spring? the rotors are also very black and carboned up. i would guess the timing has been run very lean which could have caused this as the mixture burns too late or early. hope this helps
Hey steve what spec you going for on the rebuild?
Hi Guys,
Yes my guess is that the tune hasn\'t been the best, rich with retard has been suggested. The apex seals all appear intact - apart from the one where the corner piece wouldn\'t move - but even then its in one peice.
Ive spent some time cleaning the rotors now, and they have polished up reasonably. Does anyone know the spec for the width of the apex seal apperture? It feels tight on the seals....
I think I will change the centre plate for a tall port centre plate (ill have to adapt the manifold), new housings with a small exhaust polish. I\'ll leave the ceramic peices in to try to keep it a little quieter.
Not going for balls-out power (running the stock diff) so half bridge should suffice :)
Please do not threaten me rbs14a. Laced within your statement is intimidation tactics that i don\'t appreciate.
regards
steve
