Title: Oil Filler Cap
Post by: JasonC on December 15, 2009, 10:41:14 AM
This sounds really ridiculous, but does anyone else have any bother removing the oil filler cap on their fd? :o
Its usually quite tight and i have to put on my bike gloves to get a good enough grip of it, but this time it won\'t budge!

I know what you mean, it always seems to be tighter than I remember leaving it and the strut brace doesn\'t help get a grip.

An adjustable water type wrench should sort you out though.

I also struggle with mine, i now use a large screwdriver and tap it with a hammer, seems to do the trick :Giggle

try doing it with the engine warmed up should budge a bit easier, its because its cold outside and im pretty sure the neck is metal meaning it will shrink and tighten around the cap, just get it up to temp and it will come off easier.

filler neck is plastic on the FD ;) It\'s one of those things you learn to get around :P
What I do is spin it down so the seal touches & then give it a few degrees, I know it sounds like it would be too lose, but when you come to undo it, you will be glad you did it that tight!!

Yeah, the necks only placcy so I wouldn\'t be giving it too much abuse and whacking the cap with hammers and drifts if possible .

I found the best tool to use (as I discovered when mine wouldn\'t undo at RotorPop) is an Ada7 :Giggle. Not toooooo convenient fitting one in the boot due to their size and all the bits sticking out all over the place, but their Herculesian powers are useful for all sorts of things besides just undoing stuck oil filler caps :rollin

Well the bloody thing still won\'t move! :2Mad  Luckily my oil level is fine at the moment, and at least its my only gripe with my fd so far...

Put some effort into it

My only gripe with the oil cap is that I usually put too much effort into getting it off, it suddenly lets go and I grate my knuckles on the corner of the bracket which attaches the throttle cable to the UIM :( :(

LOL are you all just overly weak?

remember going through a halfords carpark once walking back to the car and there was 2 girls struggling with a 206 convertable thing they couldnt get the oil cap off to top up their oil, i undid it for them and walked off got in the car and drove off, drove past them and they waved me to stop to ask how you know when you have to much oil in the engine, i said check the dipstick, they looked confused, as i got out and walked over i could already see it was too full as the cam cover was full to the brim with oil they had poured near enough 5l in to an already filled engine lol! didnt know what to say or do lol!

Put on a rubber glove of some sort (a washing up glove will do) when undoing it if its tough. Gives you extra grip and will help lots :D

Is this a direct quote from the *ahem* forum you first met Lord Jonny on, dude? :rollin Does the rubber glove have to be full of vaseline first, or does that come afterwards? :D

Success! Well after about 4 other people trying to unscrew with no luck, tonight a mate managed it in about half a second!! Hopefully i\'ve not put it back on too tight. :Giggle

Dude, by the time you get past Watford Gap, you\'ll have such a nosebleed that you\'ll pass out from blood loss. Chances of you getting anywhere near my pad are non existent :D
