Title: warning signs?
Post by: Shark on May 05, 2004, 11:05:54 PM
are there any signs to look out for that can warn of an impending need for a rebuild?

Car\'s done 60k miles and I want to make sure that I don\'t do anything to make a big bill into an even bigger one.

get the car warm, turn it off and leave it for 10 mins or so, restart, if it starts without problem thats a good sign. Refusal or dodgy starting is a bad sign :(

See if threres someone who can perform a compression check on the engine, this is about the best indication of how far off a rebuild is.

try not to push the car too hard if your worried, constantly ragging it doesn\'t help.

Will get the engine compression tested next opportunity.  Heading to Rotorstock at the end of the month so will add to the growing list of things I\'m planning to pick peoples brains on (cost, recommendations etc.)

Have to say I\'m not worried as such, but don;t want to create a problem.

Restart when warmed up is fine.  into life no problem.  Excuse technical fumbling here but in this situation it does idle low and a little lumpy on occasion.  Is this important?  I know it\'s running rich as I can hear it in the exhaust now and again and the oil put in at service in March isn\'t what I want in there.

does any of this mean anything?
