Hey guys,
I\'m looking at upgrading the ECU and getting the car started on the long tuning route we all seem to take after christmas. Plans are to change the ECU (rather than do the FCD route), replacement exhaust from turbo to y-pipe (it\'s stainless from there back already), and probably port the waste gate if I get any boost creep, and add my HKS mushroom filter in there (since it\'s sitting around!)
Hints and tips are being taken from here: http://fc3spro.com/TECH/FM2W/power.htm
What\'re people\'s opinions of \'Shimming Eccentric Shaft Thermowax Pellet\', as described in that link? Bother or not?
I\'m also getting another boost gauge, a decent water temp gauge, and an oil temp gauge. Opinions again?
Mainly I\'m asking about ECU\'s though, because I\'m not clued up on good or bad ones!
Right now I\'m looking at a \'Hirouchi Race Ecu\', but I\'m not sure if it\'s a little overkill. It\'s a JDM ECU too, is that going to be OK on a UK car?
What do people on here recommend, and who from? DtheBUK mentioned a few people on here could help supply them and give advice!
Thanks, as always!

JDM ECUs will be using 100ron fuel for the mapping, but you should be running it on high octane anyway lol
look for a knightsports chipped ECU, thats what im running, if you have more than stock fueling/stock turbo and you want more than 300bhp, get a piggyback or standalone, I have a greddy e-manage ultimate, liam has a power FC (backwards engineered from the FD) or if you want to go for it, get a microtech :)
Regarding the wax pellet schimming - as long as the wax pellet is moving in and out when it gets warm (can be tested in hot water), then it\'s fine. Schimming or replacing it with a solid one means you will have cold sticky oil going around the normal oil passages and causing drag on the engine until it\'s warm
If thats the ecu, it looks like the chip has been removed.

That\'ll be why its starting at 99p as they usually go for about £80 i think.
Still could get it and get a chip.

Im not 100% sure it would work though, but someone here will:Talking1
I sold a Knightsports ECU to Beezy not long ago that I\'d been running in my UK TII. He\'s sold the car it was going into so it might be worth trying to get hold of him to see if he still has it. Oh and he got it for half the price I\'ve seen them going for on Ebay ;)
Thanks guys, that helps clarify 1 or 2 things slightly!
Mainly that you all recommend the Knighsports ECU :p I think Beezy\'s one went with the car and iamben (new owner) has it. If the hirouchi isn\'t what I want, I\'ll start asking about that.
And yeah, it\'s the one in the link - you been watching it too? I\'ve just dropped the guy a message asking about it, so hopefully I\'ll get a response before the auction ends.
Yeah ive been watching it but iv decided im going to get the £40 chip and get it put in my n380 ecu.
Its the cheapest option!!
That saves me getting an fcd aswell as i ordered one from america that didnt arrive.:reallymad paid $90 got back $45 :(
Recorded delivery next time i buy anything from abroad.:spank
shimming the pellet= absolutely,, must do,, and i do to all engines i build
- the pellets do fail,, and when they do the rotor and the front stat bearings will cop it ,, it only takes one full rebuild to convince you
i also recommend modding the oil pressure relief valve to take stock oil pressure at 2500 + revs to 90 psi ( from 70 )
as for gauges,, all these are a must,, as the mazda ones are very ambiguous
i suggest though that you get electric send units for ease of install
( boost gauge can stay fully mechanical )
again,, this is how i run
and i get plenty of warning of low oil level , and of increasing water temps,, unlike the stock warnings
for the ECU,, i also have experience in install and set up with microtech
( going back to 1992 !! )
and also of haltech e6H- e8
and i have in doing so removed several chipped stock ECU\'s of various manufacture
( which dont have a patch on any fully programmable ECU )
i also spend much time troubleshooting faulty microtechs with a lack of customer support and care from the factory
-- often with horribly butchered wiring looms
haltech trouble shoots and issues are MUCH rarer, due to QUALITY
i can tell you for sure there is a VAST difference in quality and capability between the microtech and the haltech
( PS you will need to get an ECU that is fully sequential for IG and fuel , with separate trailing timing maps,, and that rules several other unmentioned top players out )
from wiring and build quality to the tunability,, haltech runs RINGS around the microtech
it is however a little more complicated to setup and install
( and this is why the micro is more popular,, not from ability ,, but because its a no brainer for idiots )
the micro is going to LOBOTAMIZE many of the original functions in the engine bay
its also going to be near impossible to make it pass many emissions tests
the haltech will not lobotomize, can be made to match emissions sched with tunable set point closed loop
- and is often plug and play
the microtech is a hanger on from an old era
where fuel and ig control with only a handful of programmable outputs was good enough for your rx4 with 13bt
in an FC it will NOT run closed loop
it will NOT run the idle control well, if at all
( only got one after many attempts to actually work OK without it hunting from being being noise soaked = usually needs a bosch idle control motor )
and its few outputs are rapidly tied up and wasted running thermo fans
it is also particularly vunerable to RFI affecting the CAS inputs
haltech has inbuilt passive and software filtering of the signals to aleviate the issue
the haltech also has voltage trim maps,, and injector latency adjust
and also,, importantly for s5 onwards,, stepper motor outputs for the OMP
micro,,, errr,, NOT
the haltech has spare ,, configurable outputs to burn
and they have a pull down of specialized setup functions from antilag to boost control ( that actually work if you bother to set them up )
haltech now run newer ECU ( platinum sport 1000 ) which gets around the often painful need for a coms port with the earlier ECU
( but basically an upgraded e8/e11 )
being in britain,, your also going to notice a VAST difference in care and support between haltech and microtech
-- something not to be over-rated---------
its chalk vs cheese,, or rather like a TRS80 taking on a pentium 4 PC
however there is also other choices in capable ECU\'s ,, another goody is the latest offerings from adaptronic-- the 420C
which is very good bang for buck,, and right up there in capability with the haltech
( i am yet to play with one,, but input pressure from several rotor heads like myself has made them tailor the package to be much more rotor oriented )
If anyone is interested I have a Apexi Power FC that I dont need, Its for the FC3S and are pretty rare to get hold of. Im running one in mine and if you have the controller it shows you all the temps etc. Let me know if anyone wants a price on it?
Thanks for that epic post there bumpstart!
So - you recommend Haltech then? :p
I know that is a flippant reply considering the effort you\'ve put in, but I really appreciate it! Can you drop me an email with where to get from, prices etc and specific recommendations please? See below for addy.
rx7pat - send me an email with price please mate - papercutout @ gmail .com
So it\'s pretty much plug and play, I\'d just need a hand controller thingy basically? It\'s almost plug and play right, but allows me to do good fine tuning as and when I want?
Thanks again guys.
i have my old EURO-spec 91 TII ECU for sale.
it is a modified stock ecu, mapped by a tuner here in Holland.
i ran:
stock ports
stock turbo
1bar boost
550cc primaries
720cc secundairies
4,5bar fuel pressure @ 1 bar boost
racing beat 3" exhaust
FMIC
fuelcut is removed
fuel and ignition map is tuned for 97/98 octane
i ran 305hp & 440Nm at the flywheel with this setup. very reliable, never had any issues
i went for powerFC afterwards because i wanted to be able to make modifications...
if you go haltec then make sure u know someone who knows how to map them.
might be handy as no point buying if few can map them / you have to travel miles to map :)
better to travel miles for a good map, then drive short for a crappy one...
i have a powerFC in mine, and here in Holland there are tuners who can map it. but i went to RE-Worx, because i know they deliver!
