Hi i just googled 13b engine number and found this which might help

(http://www.bmsc.com.au/forums/member.php?u=19)                                                             This post is from "spac"Aussie Car Champ Alpine 05.

"Under the alternator, on the front cast iron end housing. Usually a letter followed by 5 digits.

If it\'s an RX-4/5 motor, then where it says "Mazda" cast into the aluminium rotor housing will be the old style "MAZDA" typeset. Later motors have the more common, newer "mazda" typeset.

It\'s also worth finding out what end housings it has - there\'s a code (usually "N", "3B" or "R5") cast into each of the end housings.
If the motor is in the car, the easiest one to find is the on on the centre end housing, just below where the oil filler neck fits into it.
The rear one can sometimes be seen if you remove the top flywheel inspection plate AND you have an aftermarket flywheel - it\'s down between the through bolts.

And remember that it\'s possible to mix-and-match bits, so don\'t burst a blood vessel if you find that it\'s got late end housings with early rotor housings (for example).

If none of this makes sense, then a picture will tell a thousand words..."

Hope it helps, you got any pics of the car?

Rest of the thread i found this in.

on fds if the engines had a new front iron before during a rebuild, then that new iron wont have an engine number on it. Might be the same for rx4s
