Title: gearbox question
Post by: Tomsy on November 21, 2009, 10:28:07 PM
ok i\'m looking into getting a high powered rex, but with a gearbox issue. it doesn\'t have reverse, bit of a problem. but the seller said it would only cost a few hundred quid to fix/rebuild. i dont know anything about the gearbox difference between type r\'s and standard rex\'s, but are the gearbox\'s the same? because it might be cheaper just to buy a 2nd hand one maybe? anywhere i could get a 2nd hand gearbox from or replacement parts as i obviously want to get this car sorted soon as possible. any info would be much appreciated

to be honest a second hand gearbox is like you say only a couple hundred quid so if it were me id be making the seller replace it and then make sure everything else was fine before i part with my hard earned

do you plan on replacing it yourself?

if you\'re going to pay someone it might be a bit more than a few hundred quid

providing you can still test drive it fully just without doing reverse and its the right price  go for it,gearbox should not cost more than max £300 and fitting a few hours for competetent person say max £200 and budget for new oils and possibly change the rear main oil seal on the engine while its out another £150 max.
I think that is a generous amount to budget for.

All rex gearboxes are the same, diff\'s change from certain models but are all interchangable,

Hope thats answered your questions.
