Title: oil temps
Post by: Adam fc on November 18, 2009, 09:02:43 AM
Hi,

Recently myy car has been running engine oil temps of around 120-140 degrees when warm.
Is this normal in a rotary? Im running halfords enhanced mineral 10-40 is this recomended??

humm seems high to be honest - but im not sure how accurate the gauge is to be honest

does it reset to 0 when you let it cool down ??

an easy way to check ( which is what i did when fiiting them )

unscrew the sensor from under the filter - and stick it in a cup of hot water .. if it goes to around the 90-100 mark - then you know its right ( boiling water temp )

if it raises above this - then you know the gauge is slightly out and you can visually compensate for it :D

Im running Halfords orange, its fine, its not like its in there for more than 4000 miles :) I have had no issues with it, but yeah that does seem a bit high, although is this an FC or an FD? FCs don\'t have oil temp sensors as standard, what aftermarket one do you have?

also depends where the temp sensor is placed, pre cooler or post cooler.

Yeah I\'m running an omori mechanical gauge.I think I may have found the problem which was the needle on the gauge was loose when I tapped the glass on gauge it simply fell off lol.
Just need to position the needle it the right place and see what temps I get.what sort of maximum temps should I be looking at for oil and water?? My water gauge rairly goes over 90 even after a good thrashing.
What sort of max temps should I be looking at??

Amazingly I have some Omori mechanical ones, they aren\'t fitted yet, but do you have the oil pressure one? If so, have you had any issues with leaks?

yeah i have the oil pressure one too.I have had no trouble with this one at all.Wondering how im going to calibrate this oil temp gauge again as the needle has fallen off lol.

I recently bought two more omori gauges as the probe snapped off the water temp one.I assume these are quite sort after then?

measure some hot water with it, and use another thermometer to gauge it against?

Sounds like a plan to me,i\'ll see what temps I get once it\'s calibrated again and report back!

Boiling water - that\'s got to be 100 ;) (at sea level and normal atmospheric pressure)

Here is what the silly FDs use to cool their oil:

Our ones run along the lengh of the radiator and are about 3 inches thick :D

excellent, ill probs change to some braided lines for it though.

Ive been thinking about a front mount intercooler.Having that stuffed in front of my rad,oil cooler and power steering cooler will this not make the ar run a tad hot with all that restriction in the way??

Im not lloking to go down the v mount route either.

I have gone with an uprated top mount, has no lag at all :D keeps the temperatures nice and low, although there is a bit of heat soak if sat in town, it takes ages to heat up if its a good core :)

When I change the turbo over I will be going for a flat mounted intercooler :)

thicker rad (koyo) will help and proper ducting, you can also channel air from the hole in the bumper under the headlights in round to the back of the ic but infront of the rad.

cut holes into front bumper to get more air going to oil cooler.

easier said than done. well for me neways lol

its probably the easiest way to be honest ;)

im just not sure what will happen when you remove the line from the filter ped ??

does the oil filter hold oil all the time .. or does it drain back into the engine/sump over time ?

excellent well im bidding on a koyo rad and front mount at the moment.Ive got a gpsports front to go on and that has a large cut out in the front which i assume will be good for cooling.
Just wana make sure the cooling is up to the job before i go nuts with the power gains.

When i removed mine there was some oil spill but nothing a well placed rag couldnt handle:)
