Title: Rotary Hat Trick
Post by: johnf on November 16, 2009, 08:49:38 PM
What have I gone and done…………………..

Having owned both a Gen3 and a Cosmo you’d have thought I’d learned my lesson…………..Nooooooooooo…..…. Number three is on the drive.

Not only have I bought another rotary but it’s already bust.

I guess some will say that at least I won’t have to wait for it to go pop.

I’ll put some pics up tomorrow it was too dark when we got it back here today.

Most of you will know the car – Pete’s white T11 cab

I think you’ll agree it’s a lovely looking Gen2 and hopefully with a bit of TLC and luck, being that the engine isn’t total scrap, I’ll be able to have it back to how it deserves to be.

My first thought was to replace the engine with one I had planned for my truck, a Lexus V8. However having been badgered by both of the CH’s [that’s Clive Haynsford & Carl Hayward] I’ll try to keep it rotary but it will all come down to money. After all I’d only have to find the money to have the Lexus fitted. Wouldn’t be cheap but neither would a rebuild.

Need to try and find out how badly screwed the engine is first.
So if there’s anybody in the Solihull area that thinks they might help with a diagnostics please drop me a mail, I make good coffee.

So that’s me sorted for a winter project.

What worries me is that my cars seem to be getting older faster than I am.
Gen3 98 – Cosmo 95 – T11 88

You Gen2 guys can expect some questions

Congratulations. Very nice car that one. Dunno if Pip @WGT would be able to shed any light on the engine. He had it in not long before it went pop.

Well done :D You could always buy kiwimazda bridge ported motor and set it back to a TII engine. May want a good size turbo too !

The guy [young man] who bought it did spend a fair bit of money with Pip but messed around with a couple of ECU\'s and chips.

I have no real idea of what he did but I\'m guessing he went too far.

Good idea to ring Pip, not sure how much light he\'d be able to shed, but worth a call.

Thanks

If anyone doesn\'t know the car, this was Peter\'s \'for sale\' thread

Been out in the rain for a couple of months since it looked that good, but it\'s only superficial grime

I seem to remember he just had issues with the car and kept taking it back, rather than checking it out more himself. I have been in petes white vert :) its a good car :)

Anyhu good buy, pete doesn\'t seem to bad at making good looking fc\'s!

I think a Parkway would have slightly more kudos than a Repu :Thumbs-up, though they are undeniably cool. And I din\'t have to Google either of them :p. Pete\'s old cab is a most excellent bollide, I was tempted to make him an offer when he sold it in the first place.

Hi John,

Sorry I didn\'t get back to you on Saturday! First thing I would do is check what ECU it has at the moment, and if there\'s any doubt obtain a stock S5 ecu and a boost controller. In terms of engine, until you know the exact nature of the failure it\'s hard to advise what steps to take next... :wave

John,

If you need a totally stock ecu in known working condition, to test with, I can provide one - although I will want it back at some stage as it\'s my "looking at and seeing how it works ECU" :cool

I know Pete\'s old car is 88, but it\'s got Series 5 loom and engine - the ECU I have is off my vert so it\'s a UK Series 5.

Let me know if you need to borrow it :)

Thank\'s for the offer, one I\'ll more than likely accept.

I\'ll pull the ECU today and see what it is.

He told me used two, referring to one as \'the one that blew the engine\'

He also went on about you helping him with a fueling issue, do you remember that?

The first of my \'what\'s this\' pics.

Why is this little pipe just left in the big pipe. Can\'t see this doing anything?

doesn\'t look like the best place to mount a boost control either.

That looks like it\'s coming from the Air Control Valve (carburetor looking thing on the side of the lower manifold). If it\'s what I think it is, then that\'s the relief air pipe - normally that should vent through a silencer (the infamous anti-moo valve) under the drivers side headlight.

It could be left venting to air - but their might be some odd noises :Giggle

Well John I see you were not able to resist, but who can blame you ! It looks great in the photos. Carl told me a week or two back that temptation had reared its ugly head. But putting in a V8 surely not with all your experience with rotaries or then again ! Welcome back

Compression test didn\'t go that well.

Used a piston one with the valve removed - couldn\'t get a reading on either front or back.

So - what are the odds on both sides going at the same time?

Thought it may be the tester but connected to an air line it works fine.

Been lent a camera on a wire - cool eh. Thanks to Craig [tinker27]

I\'ll be off to see what I this will tell me shortly.

Post by: Prof on November 17, 2009, 03:19:12 PM
I\'d of thought you\'d see something - did the compression tester seal in the plug hole ok ?

That amount of pressure will find the first hole it can :)
Title: Rotary Hat Trick
Post by: grinder on November 17, 2009, 03:40:06 PM
can you turn it over by hand ( grab the belts at the front and turn it )

if you take the plugs out - listen for nice even "pssssts"

if your getting nothing at all from both front and back .. then im impressed :D :D
Title: Rotary Hat Trick
Post by: johnf on November 17, 2009, 03:50:05 PM
Be impressed

Put the camera in both and they both look shot.

Still quite difficult to see but there looks like missing/damaged tips on both.

Looks like worst case scenario - Take it out strip it down and see where I go from there.

I expected to have to strip it, just depends how bad the internal damage is.

So who\'s local, taken these out before and fancies a bit of cash?

John, sorry to hear about the engine in the new car. RIOT is running well, cared for by Carl and putting a smile on my face when ever I take her out for a run, except when coming home in the dark and rain the other night.
I have never driven a car with such poor headlights (scary) so have ordered a set of Clives HID headlight kits. Look forward to seeing pics of you, top down driving the new motor. Do you still have the two rear sill extentions in black that you had when I bought RIOT?

Glad you got the car and at last it has gone to a good home. The compression test by Pip was mid 7\'s all round so it was a hard pill to swollow when I learnt he had blown it. 1st thing is to check to turbo, make sure that was not the cause and then prepare for the strip. Carl did me a very good deal on my engine and he would be the best person to send the lump to to get rebuilt (thats if there\'s anything left of it). The car did spend some time at Pips for a boost problem and idle that seemed to come and go. Also lots of money to Pip which never cured the problems.  The ECU cured all of that in the end which I sent the previous owner. That ECU is a chipped one and came originally from my present orange one and was a really good ECU. I think the previous owner just wanted too much out of the car for which it was never really capable off in its almost standard fit.  Too much boost killed that engine with a lead right foot and hence the need to check the turbo to see if that caused both rotors to sustain damage or failure.
Be nice to see that car back on the road.

Hi Pete

I bought it expecting the worst and I don\'t think I\'ll be disappointed.

I\'m going to stick the camera in again tomorrow and see if I can get a better evaluation.

It\'ll have to come out but I\'d like some idea of the damage extent.

I\'m assuming it\'s quite difficult to wreck both front & back?

I\'ve attached a pic of the ECU, is this the one that went with the car?
Seems quite a lot of \'splicing\' gone on.
Title: Rotary Hat Trick
Post by: grinder on November 18, 2009, 10:13:07 AM
crickey !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

that could be down to the S4 loom mating to a S5 ecu .. but not sure
Title: Rotary Hat Trick
Post by: Prof on November 18, 2009, 10:36:36 AM
Well the green wrapped loom - looks like someone\'s done a tidy up on that bit - but those splice connectors - they are iffy to say the least - best splices are proper locking connectors with solders terminals, or if you don\'t want a connector in line, then twist and solder or crimp and solder the joined wires and heatshrink over the top - not going to come unstuck then or deteriorate with corrosion over time.

Is the small number of wires that\'s trailing off to the right going to a boost controller of gauge of some kind ?

QuoteIs the small number of wires that\'s trailing off to the right going to a boost controller of gauge of some kind ?

Would that be this?

There is some sort of oblong \'Apexi\' controller mounted in the dash.

A different question.

When lifting the carpet to access the ECU I see both the carpet and floor in the passenger side are wet.

Is the common, and is there a likely source/fix?

That makes sense - probably the same on that M1tch has - AVC-R I think it\'s called.  I was just suspicious of the splice on one of the injector wires (far left ecu connector) - but probably done as an RPM sense.

As for the water - it\'s most likely coming in from the top of the A pillar - there is a rubber strip that goes around the front edge of the door jam, and it\'s hollow.  Water is supposed to collect in the \'cup\' at the top of the door jam and flow through the rubber and out at the bottom of the door, but if it\'s like others I\'ve seen, the rubber becomes clogged with grit and stuff over time and water starts pooling.  A good blast with an air line will help it, and also check the small \'weep\' hole at the bottom is free.

I\'ve had several leaks in that area - for some reason the passenger side seems to get it worse - no idea why.

Right, found a guy on ebay he\'s close to me and has an engine BUT is there a difference between the turbo and non turbo block?

I\'ve asked him the question but he admits that he isn\'t sure, this was his reply

Quotehi john, the 13b is out of the second gen non
turbo, but i think it might have been in a turbo
before, cos, it a has blanking plate made and
fitted to the air intake section manifold, has
some thing to do with the air pump which is not on
there now, or emessions related , has the oil feed
for the turbo, and return , but not the right oil
return place, in the sump, and not next to the
bottom water pump pipe , as it should be .
basicly, its non turbo now, but could be turbo ???
im no expert ,, come over have alook and see what
you think

Would it be usable as a donor?

Thanks

John

I\'ve asked they previous owner about the ECU situation and he sent me this back

Quotethe ecu that is in the car right now has a \'non removable\' rom chip, its a proper jdm performance ecu designed for an apexi avcr, it also has a fuel cut defender, its cabable of taking an uprated front mount inter cooler and a larger turbo, however that ecu had only been in for 2 weeks when it blew the engine, the chip thats in the centre console is the chip that came with the car the ecu it came in is in my house with a beat 4 chip in it (this is the removable one) so if i send you the ecu with the beat 4 chip in you then have a choice of 3 ecu set ups (in hindsight id stick with the beat 4 one) its designed for the set up of the car exactly as it is now, the rxo1 chip thats in the centre cosole is of unknown origin altho its definatly not standard - the chip that managed to produce the 240bhp was the rx01 chip - if you send us your address ill send you the original ecu with removable beat 4 chip

John

Is it just the short block, or does he have manifolds on it.  Pictures would be good to help identify it, but fundamentally the N/A and turbo lumps are different - the NA lump has 6 inlet ports, whereas the turbo lump only has 4.

Sounds like this might have been a 6 port lump that\'s been mated to a turbo at some stage in it\'s life.  Ideally you are looking for the 13BT lump.

Don\'t get me wrong I know from past experience that your costs are more than reasonable but I am looking at a pretty shot engine here.

Hi John

Love the car mate, cant wait to see it in the bare metal. My engine went a while back, and I pulled it myself and spent alot of time on it. When I got it all back together it still had coolant problems. After all the seals and other parts I bought and wasted, In the end I got it trailered down to carl (by john, carls mate who\'s quite cheap) and got it fixed properly.

So it sometimes pays off to just save and get it done right, first time!

Just a thought

Good luck:burnout

What you doing on a Mazda forum anyway? Seen the light?

Your timing is good, we loaded it onto a transporter today ready for it\'s trip down to Carl at Hayward Rotary to have an engine transplant.

So with any luck and assuming we don\'t find other issues it could [I say could] be sorted in a couple of weeks.

Thought about you Dad today - did he go to the match or just up the pub?

1 - 0 against United, I bet he wet himself.

Looking for info for my friends 97 fd, has a small problem with the twins. I keep getting tempted with a single turbo rex, they are gorgeous cars. My old Supra put me off another sequential system car.

I found the old for sale add with a few pics and the car looks great, very well looked after, show room condition.

Dad was very excited about the result, he did managed to get tickets. Everyone was getting text during the game, not sure what he is going to say when he finds out i did not watch it!

Look forward to see some more pics, and eventually the car.

I’m organising for the 3 year in a row a club stand for the imoc at the Duxford car show on the 2nd May. Thought i would mention it in case you know anyone interested in sorting a stand the this club.
