Post by: McC on November 10, 2009, 09:56:14 PM
Im looking for some advise, im new to the rotary car and im in the fortunate position to have got a run about so that i can take my rex off the road for the winter.

Whats the first things to check over?

iv heard about the champagne test, and obviously if it makes bubbles then its a rebuild situation. but if the water seals are fine....is there anything else i should check for b4 i start tuning?

any advise and tips would be great!

Cheers McC

Obviously the oil & service it every 3k, & plugs every 6-9k apart from that, you want to do reliability mods first! couple of extra gauges inside, Oil pressur (Std is cr@p & reads what it wants) Oil Temp / Water temp & boost. The boost gauge allows you to keep an eye out for any strainge boosting problems & tends to point you in the right direction when it comes to finding the corse!
If it hasn\'t got them already: Apexi Power FC or similar as getting the correct fueling is vital..... specialy when we don\'t get the jap 100 ron fuel over here! from this you are set to do anything to the car: Intake, Intercooler, exhaust, up the boost, go single turbo........
Although if you go single you will be needing injectors & fuel pump!

Hope this helps,
Jono

Hi there,

Just a few pointers to help you keep the car in tip top shape, make sure the engine is up to temperature before revving/boosting it, check all fluids and change them as and when (don\'t forget the oil and fuel filters).

Also make sure you uprate all the support systems, like cooling (both air and water), electrical (HT leads and plugs) fueling (mainly pump, but also injectors) and management system (ecu and general wiring).

Make sure that if you fit an air filter, decat and exhaust that you get an aftermarket ECU and get it mapped properly.

Make sure you also run on higher octane fuel, its a performance car and needs performance fuel.

Make sure all the modifications are done before increasing the boost, might be an idea to get some proper gauges, get a mechanical boost gauge, its more accurate.

If the car doesn\'t feel right or something isn\'t reading right, ask questions on here :) if its got twin turbos it will most likely have a failing boost solinoid causing no boost top end.

Also be aware that the car isn\'t new, so items such as the fuel pump will be getting tired, so its best to upgrade them before they cause issues.

Remember that these are thing things that cost engines:

Overheating - need a good gauge to check the temp, if the OEM gauge reads hot, or above normal, the engine is probably already lost

Overboost - issues with boost spiking will cause issuse with apex seals and its best to get a good boost controller. The car will boost quite happily 1 bar day to day, 1.2 bar everynow and then, 1.4 bar occasionly if set up, another above 1.4 bar will reduce the engine life.

Lean fueling - linked to overboosting, when the injectors are either maxxed out or the fuel pump doesn\'t pump enough fuel it might cost the engine if on boost and its lean then its not good! Get an wideband air/fuel gauge, and a good mapper :)

Hope that helps

ECU unfortunatly is going to be ebay or a person breaking a car on here as the Apexi unit\'s are the most common & since Apexi whent through a year or so ago, there are no more being made and as a result they get snapped up prety quickly & fetch a premium :(
As for the other bits.... again gut it up in the wanted section or trawl through the forsale adds is your best bet for second hand bargains, but if you want new, then Nengun.com or the club traders is where you want to be going ;)

Mazda Rotary Parts are good with lots of bits :) but check in the for sale section for other bits, even if the parts are 2nd hand, it doesn\'t make them worse, just be aware that a rotary chucks out loads more heat than a rubbishy piston engine :rollin so uprating stuff is always a good start :)

Get some photos of your car up :) is it standard?
