Title: help!help!help!
Post by: 666rex on November 08, 2009, 03:24:51 PM
hello everone, just got my 1st rx7 and am very new to rotarys, the car i bought had recently had full rebuild with large streetport, there are a couple of questions, first of all what is a large streetport and also when changing into 2nd and 3rd gears theres alot of stuttering at low revs(very annoying)it has exeedy six puck clutch which is very challenging, also i live in the northeast, could someone tell me the nearest rotary specialist, cheers all nick.

If the 6 puck is annoying you, get rid and get something a little less brutal unless your gonna be going for major numbers. The streetport is the increasing the size of intake/exhaust ports and large ports are usually used on big singles as the bigger ports allow the big turbo to spool quickly. On standard twins the larger ports will make the engine pull harder higher up the rev range i expect.

Dont know what the stuttering could be does it feel like the drivetrain or is it the engine struggling in the low revs.

The closest rotary tuners to us are either, WGT just south-west of manchester (I use these and Pip has a great reputation) or Lindop in north wales.

Pretty sure Jurgen at J-M Imports is now doing rebuild\'s but not sure what he does with regards to faults/servicing etc but worth giving him a bell too as he is only in north sheilds.

Hi there, don\'t panic, my car shudders at lower revs, mainly when in gear cruising down in speed, just dip the clutch :)

If this is your daily drive car then changing to an uprated organic might be a good idea, that 6 puck clutch has been put in there as a large streetport will be making good bhp figures if set up right.

One good tip I should let you know about with rotaries goes like this:

When its cold, drive it like its broken, when its warm drive it likes its stolen.

This means that you should never thrash a rotary when its cold (either with revs or boost), needs to get up to temperature for all the seals to expand (else the engine won\'t last long).

When its up to temperature red line it at least once each trip so that there isn\'t carbon buildup on the rotors :)

Keep an eye on temperature and boost levels, and if they have put one in, the wideband O2 sensor for air/fuel mix.

Please please please only use high octane fuel like tesco 99 or V power, the cheap petrol could cause detonation on boost causing the loss of the engine, not good! Its a performance car and needs performance fuel :)

If you are unsure of anything just post up on here, some problems are common and can easily be fixed :)

Quote from: 666rex;653119thanks mitch, was wondering if i could use tesco 99 ron cos the price of v-power is just plain stupid, also the car had following done,
  • New rebuild with large street port
  • Non-sequential twin turbo conversion
  • Apexi Power FC ECU + Commander
  • HKS twin induction kit and cold air feed
  • Greddy Elbow
  • Oil Catch Tank
  • HKS Twin power ignition system - new with rebuild
  • Aeromotive fuel pressure regulator - new with rebuild
  • Uprated fuel rail and 1600cc Bosch Secondary injectors - new with rebuild
  • Ported Primary injectors
  • Lightened and balanced fly wheel
  • Single plate 6 Puck Greddy clutch - new with rebuild
  • Re-amenya strut brace
  • HKS front pipe - new with rebuild
  • Full Tiger exhaust system - new with rebuild, should i think about uprating the intercooler and radiator, was told she was running about 350bhp whether that flywheel or wheels im not sure, also log book says 1 previous owner, would that be in this country or all together, cheers nick.

Your sir have bought a nicely (and safely) modded FD there, although it should have uprated side mounted intercoolers, but check around for options such as a V mount on the forum, an intercooler upgrade is important on higher boosted cars. I would DEFINATLY get an uprated radiatior, rotaries run much hotter than piston engined cars, and if the engine overheats - even if its a bit - you will probably lose the engine, so prevention is better than a cure, make sure you get a good make like Koyo for the radiator and maybe some uprated silicone hoses :)

When you do get around to changing tyres, spend the money on them, its the only thing that keeps you on the road! :)

If its the engine mate then i would deffo book the car in for a specialist to check the map over, last thing you want is your fresh rebuild going up in smoke so its £200-300 well spent imo.
Also when a rebuild has been run in its common practise to get the map tweaked to suit.

I too came from a itr straight into the rotary and the straightline speed is just taking it up another level. Still wanting another itr for the daily hack though.

no worries karl, by the way where do you go for service and repairs ect, how long you had yours and what are your experiences of them, matt i paid 6400 in the end as there were some papers missing and haggeling ovcorse, but would have paid more as i melted when seeing her in the flesh and i did drive to bloody bournemouth to see her, where\'s best to go for the mapping cos that chugging might be getting worse and dont want to do any damage, cheers guys, nick.

Does this chugging sound like a tractor? when the engine is running, do you see bubbles in the radiator overflow tank? What is the oil level like? How long do you wait for the engine to warm up before driving?

there\'s no noise as such its more like hesitation, for eg driving normally and am changing 2nd to 3rd at 20mph put foot down and she hesitates for 2 or 3 secs then away, does\'nt happen when changing 3rd to 4th at 30mph, could i be changing gear to early as i like to try an conserve petrol lol, just checked oil and water no bubbles to report and level the same as when i bought her but carnt get my hand in to check dip stick if thats it under elbow, could the mapping need looking at, cheers nick.

You should be able to easily get the dipstick out without removing anything it just pulls out from under the elbow. The hesitation does sound like the map either need a tweak or otherwise i would have said sparks/leads or fuel filter but as its all just been built then i guess all of these have done.

Dont think your changing gear to early as im sure i can drive along in 5th at 30mph , but deffo can accelerate without problem from 30 in 4th

I do all the work on the car myself. Had it 2 years now. Been in bits more than its been on the road haha, carnt stop changing things.

They are great cars if they are looked after. Just like any performance car I supose. Pip wil be closest I think but he isnt cheap.

Have look on japnortheast as well. Few places around as well if you want a respray.

I would say take the plugs out and have a look at them. Also which heat rating they are.

Your probably worth popping down to see pip as nothing give\'s peace of mind like getting your map tweaked lol,

Karl, you fancy a festive fd meet up sometime over the next month or two, Ill get in touch with the jne fd-owners and see what we can sort out. Maybe a pub lunch or similar??

Ive got a lot on with moving house and new baby girl etc but could still do with popping the battery back on a streching the old girls legs a bit, lol

sounds good neil but there is a few things planned for the winter months so the fd will be sorn until its finished lol

congrats on the baby bud, hope all is well :D

oh nick, what kind of millage is on the engine and do you know when the last service was??

maybe just for your peace of mind, have a word with pip, get him do to a compression test and general check over and see if any of the map needs changing. i would say though if you can, do the basic service yourself of oil, oil filter, clean air filters, spark plugs rather than getting someone to do it.

all motz and service history says 51k, rebuild 2.5k ago and serviced 1.5k ago, and to be honest i would\'nt want to balls anything up karl but deffo gonna get it looked over, was thinking haywood rotary north as its only donny, cheers guys.
