Title: The all incompassing fd aftermarket seat thread!
Post by: turbotoaster on November 07, 2009, 08:05:33 AM
Well it seems that alot of people are asking about what seats fit an fd.

Now alot of people will say, just go buy some brides and thats all very well and good but alot of us run our cars on tight budgets and would like nice aftermarket seats but dont have the cash for bride prices.

I am one of those in that sort of position and like alot of people i turned my head to ebay in search of a bit more style, comfort and roadholding that different seats offer.

Doing a bit of research online about sizes we could get away with, 55cm in the shoulder width was mentioned alot, so this will be the bases of my findings.

Now luckily for us, there are a few ebay sellers who give the full sizes of there seats so we can compare and contrast to make it easier.

Obviously everyone has different budgets and im not saying theres nothing wrong going for established brands and i do understand the safety aspect on unknowns before the bandwagon jumps on me.

Ok first up is the Autostyle sports seats, there seems to be quite a large range of different seats but theres only a few that i believe will fit.

Here we can see a list of what they have now the main one to be concentrating on is in the A column anything above 55 is a no no, so as you can see, there are a few options.

If your a fan of brides and want the same style, you can go for SS34Z
A: 55cm   B: 60cm   C: 48cm   D: 29cm   E: 86cm   F: 59cm   G: Variable
(http://my.frooition.com/080389/images/SS_34Z.jpg)

now these obviously look like brides and if you can forgive them not have that name on then they might be the ones for you, currently priced at £199 each they are big saving on the originals.

Ok the next one is the type eco
(http://www.racedynamics.biz/shop/images/Bucket%20Seats/SS%2040LL-xl.jpg)
now these remind me most of the recaro speeds and looking at the dimensions compared to them its pretty much the same,  at only £120 each its also a big saving on the real ones. they also come in tons of different colours so you can match them to your car/style. These will be the ones im going for.

Next one is style N
(http://www.racedynamics.biz/shop/images/Bucket%20Seats/SS%2020RR-xl.jpg)
Now these are £200 a piece and as you can see these are 56cm wide so i cant 100% guarantee they will be ok, but im sure a bit of adjustment would squeeze them in.

Now i havent finished this thread and will add more info as i go along but i thought it might help people out a little bit.

Any comments are welcome and any more info on cheap seats that needs adding is more than welcome.

Also once we have covered all that we can get onto the more expensive seats to let all you rich guys happy;)

Might also be an idea to check on this site, they quality of the seats are pretty good for the price, I think they have a 56cm sholder:

For info, I\'ve got Recaro SPGs in my FD and according to the Recaro website they measure 590mm across the shoulder wing bits. Admittedly, they do touch the door cards with the door shut but I thought it might useful to know.

well in terms of subframes, you will have to make your own but there is potential with the ones from atomic rex as i notice you could use there bases to adjust the seat side to side, ie bring it closer to the tunnel but personally i would mod the ones that come with the seats.

Here is a few more that should fit.

now these i really like, they are £215 and again look like the gt3 seats from a porsche, i suppose it all depends on your budget, if you want comfy sports recliners that fit(aka ecos above) you can get them for £160 for the pair or you can pay extra for a bit more style at £215 each.

now these are on sale at £190 each and they only have a shoulder width of 53cm so should give plenty of room, similar to other seats out there put with the narrow shoulder width it should give you the chance to play with them to get the driving position right

I like the look of them John.  Will have to meet up with you and have a look at them once fitted.  I am struggling to get my seat to fit with my Cusco cage installed.

I think i passed you coming in from Westhill one day but can\'t remember if i was in the RX7 or RS6.

The seats should be the same size as the Recaro from an RZ etc, but with slightly different fittings (same as Recaro SPG).  I will take some measurements of the original seats and these and let you know the improvements to head and leg room.  Will also post some photos also.  But will not get then installed until mid Dec though.

I think mine may the first ones in the UK.

Has anyone put these into a rx7 before?

My gut instinct is theyll be too wide...

My seats from Odula cost 1 050 GBP including shipping, for two seats and seat rails.  Will have to pay tax when they arrive in the UK on top of that.

Got those in mine (original Recaro ones rather than the Honda versions).  They a a little tight as the base, but nothing major.  At the top they are fine.  Awesome seats!

od404 - any pictures of them in your FD?  What rails did you use - and where did you buy them?

The seats came with the car.  They are on Bride rails (I think the LO model, but can\'t quite remember).  I should have a picture somewhere at home of them.

the only seat I know of that fit the FD (even with a slight squeeze) are the Sparco Roadster II

And they are very much alike the RZ Recaro\'s from MAzda

Seats from Odula now installed.  Fitting was simple, but the shoulder wings do just touch the doors - just compressing the foam.  The leg room similar to original seat, with an extra 1" of head room.  Pretty easy to get in and out of the car with low sides, but also plenty of support.  High wear areas have a hard wearing rubber/plastic overlay.
