Hi Guys,
Im pretty sure this has been covered, actually i expect it has but because im a noob and will probably get spammed for this.. Im curious the current cost of rebuilds and if there is a price difference between companies is this because one using good quality parts compared to the other, or is it that there time is charged different per job etc...
I\'ve contacted two companies regarding rebuilds and have heard NOTHING back regards to costs, two which pop up everywhere and nothing.. I\'m surprised ! so what did everyone do in the position of (i need to find a rebuild company) I\'m not tech minded todo it my self but i expect it\'s alot cheaper of course....
I take it you mean a rotary engine rebuild? You are looking at around £3500, it then depends on what else you are wanting. There are a number of reputable companies who won\'t rip you. Carl at Hayward Rotary is the guy I\'ve dealt with in the past and the one I would recommend, however everyone has their own favourites and Tim at RXmotors knows what he is talking about. The others off the top of my head would be Jimmys,Lindop motors, Dragon and some others I can\'t think of at the moment. Stay away from some ....er in Poole who goes by the name of Oscar, he has taken a few people to the cleaners from what I have heard.
Hi there, different companies will buid the engines to different specs using the parts they feel are best.
The rebuild cost is about £3000ish, but a lot of the is the labour of getting the engine out of the car. I know that JM garage charges less than the industry norm as he doesn\'t charge as much in labour to get the engine out.
The main thing you have to watch is if you need any new parts such as rotors or housings, a new FD housing is about a grand, a new FC housing is about £750ish, if you need to have your car on the road it might be an idea to get a 2nd hand engine from some of the cars being broken on here, fit that and then you have a working car and you have more time to rebuild the engine - plus you can sell an engine on as well!
I have had an engine rebuilt by Steve Rivett, Cant fault any of his work and has a very personal service, His prices are a bit cheaper than the well known builders. Depending on where your based he ight be closest to you. drop me an email if you want his details.

i had my engine rebuilt by Hayward Rotary and the price i paid for the job was awesome give him a call mate and he will talk you through the process and give you a cost aswell.
Kris
I emailed Ross at dragon but had no reply, and emailed Jimmys and had no reply which was over a week ago now.
Going to shout out to Hayward and see whats the score and how much etc !
Reading your other post about buying an RX7 I guess you\'re asking a hypothetical question.
If or when you buy an RX and if or when the engine goes, what\'s it going to cost to fix.
Difficult one to answer.
You could be talking 1-2-3 years down the road and who would give a price on such an unknown?
You would get a price for a job now but whoever you talk to will as lots of questions and their price will depend on things they won\'t know until the engine is taken apart.
Just two cases
Could be a water seal failure with no damage to the plates.
Could be a tip and ruined the plates.
The guys above seem to have given a good idea of worst case scenario.
Put yourself in the position of the company you\'re going to ask.
\'I\'m looking to but an RX - IF I do and IF is breaks what\'s it going to cost to fix?\'
Not trying to defend the ppl who haven\'t replied but there are a lot if \'ifs\' in there.
Best to try and look for a car with a recent rebuild and still has some warranty with it, you\'ll sleep easier.
John
Hi John
Thanks for your reply, and everyone elses to that matter...
John you\'ve got it spot on there mate, i didn\'t look at it like that... I had nightmares in my head of RX7s engines are going to go bang as soon as 39,999 hits 40,0000 miles and its all the same issue...
Its the only thing that\'s putting me off and scares me of getting one, actually im half way there as i\'ve put my current motor on ebay and someones currently winning it at £1,700 !
I keep thinking to my self, am i going to buy my self trouble when getting an RX7, or should i look at it like anycar... i.e the engine one day will pop just these are sooner lol ! i.e like the smart car, engines in those go pop after awhile !
Every car always has an instant reaction..
Skyline - Built strong engine (now chavs car)
Largo - whats that
Scooby good engine
RX7 - why would you want to buy a rotary engine, there s**t is the reply i kee geting....
Have always been hooked on RX7\'s though and will get one no matter what, just need to tread carefully it seems :S :S
Also bear in mind that if you buy any car with this sort of performance they will ALL cost big bucks to fix, keep tuned, service etc.
I see a couple on ebay
\'Engine rebuilt in Japan\' might well have been but I think the RX market in the UK has been blighted by Japan seeing the UK as a dumping ground for cars nearing rebuild time and that\'s one of the reasons why the rotary reputation is poor.
Please note - my views only,
Not having a go at any of the established genuine importers who\'s quality cars offer warranties with their sales.

You got it the wrong way round. Its some of these so called importers bringing poor examples into the UK thats blighted the RX market. Lets not even get onto the subject of warranties.
Best thing the original poster can do is either
a - buy a car thats been done in the UK
b - buy a blown example and hope/pray that the rest of the car like the brakes, gearbox, diff, suspension and wiring is in good condition
The main problem with all imports in the UK is the alarmingly high percentage that are damage repaired usually to a poor standard. Then add in the rotary factor and you begin to see why buying a decent rx7 is a minefield. Thats why very good examples can still command top money.
Mate,
Most people who now own a rotary engined car originally had the "hope this sh!t dont break" thing going on in the back of their mind but tbh like everything else in life its a risk.
Every car you have listed (cept the larg(unless you mean evo incase include that too )) there i have known an owner that has blown their engine and in every case its cost a whole lot more to fix than a rotary.
In your frame of mind IF you buy a rex then you are in fear of driving it like a fanny (due to scared of damaging something) and it really does them no good and causes more problems than giving them a fair element of death on a regular basis (as funds allow).
I was a honda vtec enthusiast (still am Dc2\'s ROCK) and ill be honest i was concerned due to the misleading ....../rumours that are written about the rotary engine in various car mags/forums so i bought a warrantied freshly rebuilt(Jimmy\'s) and beautifully cared for car and its been, dare i say it, MORE RELIABLE THAN ALL MY PREVIOUS HONDA\'S
Seriously my first eg vti dropped its oil and its engine followed then my first itr cost me a fortune as my flywheel came loose and shagged itself and the clutch within the first 6 weeks.
Honestly mate IF you want one, buy one and enjoy it!!!!!

LOL.
My view on some jap cars:
RX: fantastic to own a good one, but get a bad one & it\'s a money pit..... but still fun!
Skyline: GTSt\'s Most common car on UK shores I think.... almost like the old Mk 3 escorts! LOL
Supra.... prety much bullet proof, but soooooooo heavy & deseptivly big!!
Scoobies: everyone I know who has had them have had engine problems!!

My engine is currently on 88k miles, compressions of 7 on all rotors, there is an egi engine that is just over the 250k mile mark :)
Skyline - good engine, cheap parts
Scooby engine - blows up if you aren\'t careful past stock boost as the WHOLE engine has to come apart to change the \'bottom end\' which is in the middle hehe
RX7 - held together with long bolts, plate, housing, plate, housing, plate and has easy to replace seals :)
If you look after the engine it will last ages, as the engines are currently getting on a bit its usually when someone doesn\'t maintain the cooling system, intake system or fueling when things go wrong, if you make sure that all the systems are in good working order/uprated, then there won\'t be any issues.
If the engine is built right its fine, I know when Hayward rotaries rebuild james\' FD engine from JM garage (back before he starting building his own) the wastegate got stuck closed and it boost spiked to 2.6bar, engine was fine afterwards :)

This thread is getting more daft by the minute :Hammer
As for joining, Mr. 7, there\'s a link to the shop at the top of the page, just follow that and buy a membership. Although they usually get renewed in the new year, you may wanna email Lisa and see if you should wait till January so as not to pay for a full years\' membership that only lasts two months IYSWIM
Welcome aboard, anyway, this site is the fount of all rotary knowledge lol :D And full of tolerant, friendly helpful types too :Thumbs-upRemember, there
are no stupid questions, only silly answers :rollin
Just had a read of your other thread. 4k on an FD is either gonna get you something already blown or a reasonable car but one that\'ll still need work.
Not having a dig at anyone but I wish buyers would look past the engine and realise that they\'re buying a car and not just an engine. The amount of times i see cars advertised as rebuilt and then when you get there, the rest of the car is a heap - there\'s lots of other things that make a good FD; suspension bushes (especially rear pillowballs), transmission mounts, rattle free interiors, factory shut-lines even on "kitted" examples. The point im making is - a rebuild doesnt neccesarily make a good car - thats why theres so much variance in price (as per your last thread)
Not owning an Fd personally, (alright, I work on one all the ....ing time, its just not mine),if I was going to buy a performance car that was affordable- I\'d have a GTR but I\'m penniless(got a Mustang though)!!!!!!-{then I would have to consider what it looks like first and foremost, Impreza? Take the body kit off it and its just a butt ugly saloon car. Ideal for drug dealers but certainly not owt different is it?} { Skyline, again its not an attractive car is it?Its also a fat ........} { Evo? Yep, nice car without a doubt, and a little bit different.} { RX7FD. I personally think it is one of the most attractive sports cars the japanese have ever designed and reliability issues are usually attributed to the engine being entirely different to anything else, critics don\'t understand the rotary therefore it must be unreliable}. {Speak to either Carl or Clive, these are the only two guys I personally have spoken to at length and can recommend their enthusiasm and knowledge, they are also the nearest to me in Huddersfield-Carls 201miles away and refuses to move nearer to civilisation.} {Just in case anyone wants to know why I keep putting these {} in, they indicate the beginning and end of paragraphs, I don\'t want people to think I ignore their helpful comments!!!!!!} private joke-see \'porting gurus\').

Sorry about that, I think it was the word pistons *shudder* that threw me :rollin silly piston cars need uprated forged internals :rollin

mines with steve at the moment getting built, we are going for massive ports, hes gonna go bigger than his normal ports to see what sort of power we can make(500bhp plus), awesome bloke, but never try and call him to have a 5min conversation, you can never get him off the phone as he is so enthusiastic, proper lover of what he does
Have owned 5 Skylines and 3 RX7\'s,
To use as a more daily car and something with room the Skyline R33 GTR is the better buy, but it more boring and less of an engaging drive than the RX7.
The rx7\'s are not brill for everyday use (depending on level of tune) and dont have a great deal of room BUT the drive is absolutely awesome, by far the best drivers car i have driven.
Also have owned 2 Evo\'s and a Escort Cosworth, for driver grin factor the RX7 is best by far :Laugh
Spoke to Carl Hayward today, regarding costs of rebuilds, what to look out for, and general advice... this guy is amazing and know his stuff :) very friendly guy and spoke on the phone... awesome :)
