Title: Engine mount\'s are shot...
Post by: dthebuk on October 26, 2009, 12:59:55 PM
ok so im pretty sure my engine mounts are gone. When the engine is rev\'d with the bonnet open you can see it moving loads. It also oscillates when you let off the power. Free revving this is, i can\'t notice a problem when driving the car.

Anyhu, is this problem going to result in damage to other parts? bear in mind the car is only going to be used as a drifter.

Then lastly, how easy are they to change? Can i just unbolt the transmission cross member then lift up the front of the engine? Or does it need to be unbolted so the block can be lifted on its own?

cheers guys :cheers

With a chain on the engine and an engine hoist, you should be able to change these in situ.  You might also be able to jack onto a flat block of wood under the gearbox to help support the engine weight.

I had to take mine out on one side when I did my oil pan in situ - never again - was a bugger of a job - but at least it proves it\'s possible.

You can get at the necessary bolts from underneath - but you may want to take the turbo inlet pipe off on the driver\'s side - gives more access ;)

oh so theres space for the gear box to move up in the tunnel? and you can leave the gearbox cross member bolted in?

Sounds like i need to have a good noesy. Now lets find me some engine mounts!

cheers for the help, even if Stav does say its all lies!!!

This may not be applicable to rx7\'s so dont take it for gospel but in the world of Turbo\'d Cinquecento\'s (cue sniggering) most people just inject the standard engine mounts (ie all the gaps in there) with plenty of silicone to give a much more solid mount. Might be of some use if you\'re just using the car for drifting and might be able to rescue an otherwise dead mount :)

sounds like quite a good idea. You got a link to any more info on it?

Will try dig out some info for you when i get home tonight as i know a good friend of mine did the mod, his silicone packed standard mounts were stiffer than the off the shelf uprated mounts he had previously too which was a bonus heh :)

Not sure about the whole Silicone idea - most silicone stuff sets pretty soft, I\'d have thought you\'d need more of a resin based one.

Dude - text me or chat to me later, I\'ve got a mate who can produce poly mounts cheap (theough Gtirtrack might be doing some soon too). Though you might have to remove one, send it to him and get a pair of new ones back - cheap stuff tho, I paid £20 + postage for a pair of mega long ones for my E30!

Sae to you hat man, he can probs do them too, they\'re smaller too, so probably cheap!

Its not Silicone its Polyurethene you need to use silicone wont do crap.

Its a cheap way to fix your old mounts  and also makes them stiffer than OEM rubber.

I was also going to be looking at changing my engine mounts as they do look quite bad. I can already see it being a little hassle although very much do-able.

Hmm i think i\'ll read into this injection stuff first. Want to do it quickly rather than rip bits out. The car hasnt been fully working in ages so i need to get some use out of it :P There\'s also the slight issue that im a lazy bugger..... haha

i\'ll be awaiting your link ghost

Ended up staying at a friends last night, but will dig something out for you tonight

Might not have been silicone but was definately something similar (maybe tigerflex or whatever its called that people use to mount spoilers/skirts etc) - will find out though :)
