Title: Insurance at 19
Post by: -Clarkey on October 25, 2009, 08:32:42 PM
Ive been looking at getting an rx7 when i turn 19 but not sure on the insurance. Ive heard of some 19 year olds getting insured for around £2200 for 3G rx7 but cheapest i can get is £2800,  before people say get some more experience in fast cars etc im currently driving a subaru impreza. Has anyone insured one at 19 and if so wheres the best place too.

Mate, wherever you go at 19 you are gonna struggle to insure an FD for less than £2-3k.  All FDs were group 20 cars, but not all imprezas were so expwerience in one doesnt always qualify you for the other. I got my insurance at 23 with 5yrs NCB and it was still over a grand.

I\'d try adrian flux / a plan / sky and a few others from the "Useful Contacts" thread, but i seriously doubt you will find an answer to your liking.

Also, (no idea what your situation is so apologies in advance) these things are expensive to run. And i DO mean expensive, i use mine as a daily driver and i go through £50 a week in fuel and thats only driving 10-15miles each day!!!

My advice would be to go for something similar but cheaper to get used to the RWD layout like a MR2 or even a FC Rx7 if you really want rotary.

However, if you dont mind paying the $$$ for the insurance then go for it!! You will not regret it!!

Fair play to you if you are happy to pay that sort of money to insure a car - wish I was earning that kind of money aged 19! :Giggle

An FC TII will be considerably cheaper to insure than the FD, and with a couple of cheap mods you will see over 260bhp...

Side note i found with my MR2\'s and my RX7 that the specialist insurance guys couldnt match the generic confused.com quotes (even with mods)

I\'m 23 and insure my VW Bora tdi and my RX7 on a multicar policy and pay approx £1k

Or do what I did and get a couple of years NCB in a beaten up old landrover and enjoy the other side of motoring-getting stuck and trying to figure out how to get unstuck.:Thumbsup!

Try admiral, I got my renewal quote from this year and it was more expensive than the last, so I rang them up and got over 120 quid knocked off. I have been insured with them since I was 20 on my rx7 I am now about to turn 25. I paid 1100 for the first year with them. I now have all modifications declared, full bodykit, wheels bonnet spoiler custom respray, now paying 600 a year but will be half that next year hopefully as I will be 25. Get a quote online from them then ring up. Try putting your mum, sister of misses on aswell that might bring it down a bit more. Mine insurance isn\'t the cheapest as others have got it but I am not 25 just yet.

In a nutshell, it\'s so great as they really don\'t want to insure you..

It\'s based on probability though - if 17/18/19/20 yr olds lowered their accident rates, then insurance premiums would come down. There\'s also some pricing in there based on experience - at 19 you\'ve had maximum 2 years (likely less as you won\'t pass your test on your birthday) and so you have no experience in terms of road driving (insurance companies don\'t care if you drove before you were 17 as a) it\'s illegal and b) where it\'s not illegal it\'s mainly racing (karts etc) and hence that will only help push your premium up!).

Ways to bring insurance down? Buy a car nobody else drives, or one that old crumblies drive (the car makes a lot of difference). Ensure the car is garaged at night. Alarm it + tracker it. Don\'t modify it. Buy a UK car not an import (which again is more about the profile of people who buy import cars than anything else). Oh, and change your job - mechanics, reps etc pay more than analysts and medics for example.

Youngsters keep crashing though, so as a youngster you\'ll have to pay for it - even if you\'re not one of the accident prone..

i dont do any of those jobs and my car is still factory and i dont think there is that many fds around now days so i still dont see how they can rob people this much of money

nope, but you fall into the category of a young, male, inexperienced driver whether you like it or not!! If you were in one of those jobs, had a moded car, etc you\'d be paying on top of the quotes you have!!

As Aceman says though, its based on the balance of probability and risk over a range of people, not based on individual circumstances.

The other, slightly more cynical, way of looking at it is that its a legal requirement to have insurance - so they know that if you want to drive you\'ll pay whatever they tell you to.

it\'s a sh!tty deal, but thats the way it is unfortunately.

They do a mathematical calculation based on where you fit within their profiles, which means they will both be able to afford to pay out if you have an accident, but also make a small profit if you don\'t.

The FD is a group 20 car. You are a high risk driver profile. Your premiums will thus be large.

You also need to remember the type of car you have bought. When released, these things were priced with Porsches, and on many levels are faster than some Porches from the era. Again, does not help your cause.

Hate to put a downer on your purchase, but expect stonking premiums until you\'re 25 at least, and then don\'t expect them to rocket down!!

As an aside, you speak (well, type on the forum!) as though you did not check out insurance costs before purchase? A common thing done by some people buying these cars - I bet there\'s been many a youngster thinking "but it only cost me £3k to buy.. What would make me think it would be £3k to insure??" when bidding on ebay!!

PS: People like me who dealt with this stuff don\'t rob you.. You bought the car, and you can always say no to my companies quote :)

lets put it this way i paid a hell of a lot more for my car i didnt care how much the car cost me because it means more to me that a normal car so the insurance side will only mean i can spend the amount of money on the car instead of giving it away to robbing bast*rds. at the end of the day if i wait till 25 that will mean i can afford to spend a good 10-15k on the car and i cant even begin to imagine what my rx will be like by the end of that. the only thing that im not happy with is how thay can charge people this amount of money just because you have to have it, surely there is a way to control the robbing companies
