Title: Worth changing your fuel filter, was for me!
Post by: neil_jdmr on September 29, 2009, 07:21:52 PM
As some of you may know i was getting concerned about my inj duty being in the 90-95% range what with the weather getting colder etc. My initial plan had been to lower boost back down to 0.8bar where duty is the mid to high 80\'s.Car is standard twins/ports/fuelling, bolt-ons, mapped by pip

Anyway i had a day booked with a set of ramps for the day, initially friday but was put off till yesterday and along with oil / filter and plugs (cheers rixio)
we also tackled the dreaded fuel filter. What were mazda thinking putting the filter there??? and spring clips thats just cruel with a face full of warm diff.

I really feel for the guys that did this on their back with just axle stands.

Had the filter out in 15-20mins as a 10mm sockets fits in the gap between the top of the subframe and the tank to get the bracket off. Then emptied a whole lot of brown sludgy petrol out of the filter and chucked it, fitted up the new one, replaced petrol cap and primed.

Now on the way to the garage i did a couple of reference runs pulling hard at wot and recorded 0.89bar and 0.9bar on a 3rd and 4th gear run respectively, the injector duty was 91.6% and 93.2%.

On the return leg on the same stretch of road i did the same test and recorded 0.89bar and 0.91bar with duties of 87.3% and 88.9%.

So great news duties are down:) :) :) , To anyone thinking about doing the fuel filter but putting it off because its a bit of a pig to get to, It really is worth doing. My car had 15.2k miles on that fuel filter and it was rotten and that was just street use so you track guys cannot afford not too really.

Yeah thats next on my list of things to sort, good fuel flow is a must :)

Rather scary that the duties were over 92% lol

Out of interest, was that with an FC with a chipped ECU?

Fc, but was mapped by pip so although it was high i wasnt too worried i just would have backed off on the boost if the fuel filter hadnt sorted it, But it did so happy days

Phew lol anything past about 92% is maxxing the injector - not what you need on high boost lol will be interesting to see what mine is when the e-manage is in on saturday :)

That\'s weird how would your ecu know you had better fuel flow? The only sensor thAT could measure that is the lamba sensor. As far as I know this only works at idle and cruise.
