Title: power steering dileama...
Post by: Adam fc on September 28, 2009, 05:43:16 PM
Ive recently discovered that my power steering is leaking badly and as fast as im topping it up it seems to be coming out just as fast.Theres fluid all over the front under tray so its definatly blowing from somewhere.

1. Are there any common faults that i ould look at before tearing everthing apart?

2. Also going to be heading the santa pod this sunday so i would be nice to have it sorted:)

3. Also is there any harm in just taking the pump belt off?? as it dosen\'t drive anything else and i could put up with no power steering for the time being till i get find a soloution.

I think it\'ll help a little. But every time you turn a corner it\'ll put pressure into the system (I think) so it would force the fluid out of the leak anyway.
I think the usual place they go is near the stearing rack itself if I remember correctly.
Hope this helps. Im sure someone more in the know will be along shortly to fill in or correct me.

It\'s probably just the cooling pipe sprung a leak. They corrode where they pass through the bracket which holds them on.:(

As a temporary fix, I reckon you could cut off the cooling pipe and loop a bit of high pressure fuel/oil hose between the two ends. Double clip for security and Bobs your uncle!!:)

Mine was the same and I made up a new cooling loop out of copper tube and joined it as described above, no probs as yet!

+1 for cooling pipe - just in front of the rad in the nose.  They are known for going there - check for fluid contamination on your rad and oil cooler - if the leaks bad there will be quite a lot of mess ;)

well im going to attack it tomorrow morning as im off work.
Ive allways wondered what those lines were in front of the oil cooler so ill look there.Just really dont want to burn the power steering pump out as i expect its coolled by the fluid in the system? And (G@NDY) it may well come too that.cheers

Any how ill have a look:)

Its the cooling pipe, mine was happily spraying fluid all over the oil cooler lol

Why not do a saxo electric power steering pump conversion whilst you are at it :)

Ive never heard of the electric conversion?? Ive only had the car a week or so so im still just fetteling with things trying to get it ready for POD! This however was a kick in the balls as i haven\'t really got much time at the mo. :)

Neither had I, search for \'saxo electric power steering\' they apparently just bolt straight on with no modding needed to the rack :D I will be doing this at some point to be able to run the intercooler pipes where I want lol

Ill be looking out for that, ill keep an eye out:Thumbs-up would there be any harm in just simply taking the pump belt off and just having non assisted steering? would this damage the rack at all?? its just a last resort if i can\'t get something sorted:D

Think there is a write up about it somewhere. You\'ll have to search though.

yeah it was - please treat her right ! LOL

been a good few years since i have owned her though ( 3 ish i think )

she was a great car when i had her - few little annoying issues but she was great !! :D :D

i could never get the central locking to work correctly - but it did for about 3 weeks of ownership

the guy i bought it off had it for about 9 years aswell - so not tooo many owners - i think he said he paid about £9k for it !! shocking !! LOL :D :D

if you have a search thru the forums - you will see the fun i had with her ( like fitting a sodding decat pipe - that turned into a big job )

you can see the welding that i did to it ( on my website ) - aswell as all the parts i fitted etc..

me and my dad hand made the guage holders aswell - non of this off the shelf stuff :D :D

if you want to know anything about the car - just ask away ( and im sure brett knows it quite well aswell .. just dont mention spark plugs to him !! LOL )

and would you believe it took about 4 hrs to get the sticker in the back window !! LOL ( if its still there ! )

Yeah Brett certainly helped with the sale.It was nice to buy a car from the MRC community as i knew it would have been looked after in all the right ways.

One thing though, when was the rebuild done? just i can\'t seem to find any info on it all in the service history.I know Brett said mazda had put a new short block in at 91,000 miles, but can\'t find any info on it anywhere.
Its just for my peice of mind to be honest.Id eventually like some sort of mild porting but thats for another day:)

I called my local mazda dealership and they qouted me £217.00 for a new power steering cooler pipe!!
I thought sod that and marched over to my old egi to see what sort of state the cooller was in on that one....
On closer inspection it seems some one has allready by-passed the cooller on that one with a length on pipe and i had been driving that car for over a year with now problems.
So i thought as a tempory measure id do the same for the t2,so i cut the the end off the cooller that had the tapered connection so it would connect to the origional pipe and the found a length of high pressure hose and routed it back up to the power steering reservoir.

dont we all !!

to be honest i couldnt find the paper work for the engine - the garage that did some of the servicing closed so i couldnt get the print off :(

did you get the rest of the printed history ( green and white paper ) - you will see that no expense was spared

the thing about the engine - the only thing that i could find was the s/history shows some milage adjustment figure ( something like a 70K service but with hand written milage ) i think thats when the engine went in

the chap said it was a fresh engine out of a crate ;)

basically cause he bought it from mazda and had it serviced there - for £100 a year he got a full warranty on all parts - so he got a free engine ;) ( ish )

yeah the service history is exstensive which is nice too see,did u ever have her on the dyno??

Like i say i just wanted to know when the engine was rebuilt or swapped for my own piece of mind and when to start saving for a rebuild lol.
The car still pulls well so she feels like she has retained some power.

i never dyno\'d her to be honest - couldnt see the point ! LOL

she wasnt running massive power - so i would have only expected about 230 ish at the fly ?

i ran her down the strip a few times at RS1 - but that was still with the precat fitted - and she ran 15.03 i think

by the time i was going to do it again the clutch master cylinder was on its way out so didnt run

i always hoped i could have gotten the 100mph term speed - but never really had the chance !

you will have to post up how you got on at the strip !! - like i said my best time was on stock boost aswell - so you should easy make the 14\'s and i think my best term speed was about 93.xx - so you only need another 7mph :D

Unless I\'m totally loosing it, Im sure there was a bit in the big print out about the car being collected and brought back to the Mazda dealer due to engine failure?!?
I remember compression testing it about 1000miles ago and getting even numbers in the 7\'s so no way can it be the origional lump. (there\'s pics on here and on flickr of me doing the test etc)

:wave

yeah theres something in the history regarding that,i haven\'t really had much of a chance to have a good read of it all yet.
One other thing does she have any boost adjustement at all anywhere?
Title: power steering dileama...
Post by: grinder on October 01, 2009, 09:39:25 AM
good point brett !! - im sure i read that somewhere

and there isnt any adjustment for boost in the car .. its just running a full decat and FCD - hence the .9 bar of boost :D :D :D

you lot might have to bear with me when it comes to the whole turbo thing as my experience with them is minimal.
What boost are these cars running as stock just out of interest?
Also i found an invoice for an upgraded fuel pump in the history..any ideas what it is?
