Title: AST solutions..
Post by: JohnP on September 26, 2009, 04:41:08 PM
tried to search forum for alternatives to this.. my stock AST developed a rather large crack this weekend and decided to spit boiling water all over my hand (ouch).

any performance AST\'s out there? or decent alternatives?

long time since i\'v had any problems and needed to come on here lol :)

Its apparently quite common due to the age of the plastic it gets fragile, so most people got for an alloy one - like ChalieP has for sale, it won\'t crack and its SHINY lol :)

buy this part and 10 minutes Labour you have an eliminated AST

http://www.mazdarotaryparts.com/b-fd-c007-ast-removal-filler-neckb-1360-p.asp

When the water system reaches high pressure above the 0.9 bar filler cap spring the pressure lifts the cap and releases the pressure back into the expansion tank. Simple but affective.

1: Fit the FC Filler neck to the top of your filler neck.
2: Simply pull off the AST Hose from the Original filler neck nipple and remove the AST and piping which is no longer used.
3: block/bung the original filler neck nipple where the AST pipe used to go to the filler neck under the cap.
4: Take the expansion tank pipe which went to the AST and connect directly to the FC Filler Neck 0.9 bar Cap.
5: done.
i would recommend this to whoever ask\'s because it cleans up the engine bay and i have never ever had an issue with the water system since this mod.

6: also plug your radiator nipple.

see if this is more understandable.

Although i bought an aftermarket 52mm core radiator at the same time and it never had a Radiator nipple so i never had to touch the radiator to bung up the hole.

i prefer to use the rubber blanking grommets with a jublee clip rather than a piece of pipe with a bolt in the end lol.

cheers for the input nuki, and taking the time to pop those pics up.. i\'ve been on the site where the original how to is.. and this is noted at the bottom:

QuoteWARNING:
I just got off the phone with Cameron at Pettit. I was telling him that

I removed my air separation tank. I got this idea from the list (http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/) where people say it\'s fine to remove it and that there are no adverse affects to cooling. Cameron says this is wrong!! He has seen engine damage beacause the air separation tank was removed. The extremely hot bubbles cause localized overheating!!!!! Thus, I am putting mine back on.

this worries me slightly lol!

Carl Hayward recommended me to do mine that’s why i had it done.
Like i said i have had no issues with my water system and i drive my car 35 miles a day without fail and have done since the elimination over 8 months ago.
your choise :) but i prefer my engine bay empty as possible. :)
