Title: New RX7 Owner Needs Advice
Post by: luke1983 on September 25, 2009, 02:28:54 PM
Hi Guys

I have just brought my very own 1999 RX7 no modifications other then a HKS turbo timer and an exhaust (i am not sure of the make), i have brought this car as a project as i would like to get it above 450bhp (at the wheels) but i do not no where to start, what items should i start buying now to get it on its way.

I am also getting a quote for the fortune body kit. i think this might be out my price range.

Do i keep the twin turbos?

and i keep hearing the words rat nest or birds nest, what does this mean.

i am happy to spend £3000 now on modifications but i dont now where to start.

i will post some pics tom aswell.

thanks for any adivce as i now i am a newbie.

Luke

spend 1200 on 2nd hand tub kit
600 quid on fuel system
1k on management, apexi pfc, wideband and dataloggit,
300 on exhaust and air filters
150 on a radiator
300 on a front mount intercooler.

you can do it for 3k but you need to read alot

£3000 isn\'t enough really. To get 450 whp you really need a big ported engine so that £3500+ already. You can\'t get much more that 380 bhp fly with the stock turbos so your looking at a single kit.
The rats nest refers to all the small vac line and solenoids that control the twic turbo system.

£3k was my starting budget to get things going. I need to now what line to take so i dont buy things then have to replace them again. So everytime i buy a part it is ready for when the bhp gets bigger and bigger.

Then i would say start with an apexi pfc and maybe uprate some of the injectors, than may aswell save up for the rest of it and do it in one go.

I\'d say speak to one of you local tuners and get their advice to.
You would need to get your engine ported as has already been said, and obviously this means getting it out of the car and being rebuilt. Whilst out you can have all the turbo work done too.
There are a few single turbo kits around at the mo (i know as i\'m going single at the mo too and have been asking). A remappable ECU is a must and most people go for the Apexi PFC. Then its cooling and fueling.
But you also have to remember the drivetrain will need to be uprated too with clutch and possibly the diff being changed up.
Also with that extra power you gonna want to be able to stop better as well! Bigger brakes maybe???

Its best to sort out all the support systems first, lots of people overlook them and it usually costs the engine or does damage to other parts.

look at:
Upgrading fuel system with a new fuel pump - maybe injectors at a later date
Uprating the radiator to cope with the extra heat involved
Uprating the ignition with better HT leads and maybe coils
Service everything - the FD isn\'t a brand new car anymore
Uprated intercooler - V mount it good for reduced lag - cooler intake charge increases power and avoids the intercooler becoming an \'interwarmer\'
Brakes - you need to stop somehow lol
Clutch - stock clutch won\'t last long at high power
Boost Gauge - what boost is it actually making?
Boost controller - Make sure that it doesn\'t boost spike
Ported wastegate on the turbo - allows the boost controller to actually control boost lol

From there you have a good base from which to increase the power/boost of the engine, remember that the more you port it, the further up the rev range the powerband is, bit like a hot cam on a piston engine :)

Hope that helps a bit :)

Thanks,

How much do you think that would cost

look at:
Upgrading fuel system with a new fuel pump - maybe injectors at a later date - £80 fuel pump
Uprating the radiator to cope with the extra heat involved - £200-400 (check for sale section)
Uprating the ignition with better HT leads and maybe coils - £30-40
Service everything - the FD isn\'t a brand new car anymore - £30-40
Uprated intercooler - V mount it good for reduced lag - cooler intake charge increases power and avoids the intercooler becoming an \'interwarmer\' - Around £300>500 - don\'t buy cheap ebay ones!
Brakes - you need to stop somehow lol - £depends on if its just pads or disks and pads
Clutch - stock clutch won\'t last long at high power - £300>£1200
Boost Gauge - what boost is it actually making? - £30-200 (get a mechanical sort)
Boost controller - Make sure that it doesn\'t boost spike - £250ish
Ported wastegate on the turbo - allows the boost controller to actually control boost lol - £75ish but might also require the turbos to be overhauled and sorted at the same time

Check out Mazda Rotary Parts :) also check out the for sale section of the forum, as well as cars for sale for anyone breaking any performance parts

450 at the wheels - crikey...not easy!

1 - engine - large ports and built to a good spec. £3500+
2 - clutch - some sort of twin plate. £300 + for a second hand one, £1000+ new
3 - V Mount Intercooler/Rad - £500 second hand, £1100 new
4 - Fuel Pump - £110
5 - Injectors - 1680cc secondaries - £350
6 - ECU - Apexi Power FC or HKS FCon V Pro Gold - both cost around £500. Mapping is around £400. If youve not done this sort of thing before, i suggest you leave it to someone who knows what they are doing.
7 - Turbo Kit - £2500+ new or £1200 second hand
8 - 90mm exhaust - £350 second hand or £1000+ new
9 - Boost Controller - £250

Obviously there will be other areas that you might find "weak" like standard diff or standard brakes and suspension. Not to mention it\'ll prob be handy to sort some gauges out to keep any eye on things.

Compared to the FC, the FD driveshafts are like toothpicks and the diff is made of cheeeese lol

For the RE-A filter, make me an offer mate, they aren\'t common, but you can get them for about £300 new from RHD japan, im obviously looking for less than that lol its built for crazy high air flow - im running the FC equivilant in my car, really good fuel economy as the engine gets enough air, and all the air the turbo can suck in when on boost lol

email me an offer, david.r.mitchell AT hotmail . co . uk

BTW, become a full member :) you get loads of discounts and you can PM people lol which is why I can\'t PM you lol :)
