Post by: Jas on September 24, 2009, 12:02:55 AM
as far as im awere my twin turbos are ok (but i will have them checked at the same time as the rebuild that will start i hope this weekend:D)

but my question is why have ONE big turbo why not if it can be done uprate the Twins to a little bit bigger
so you dont have so much lag

Im new to turbos and how all this stuff works

Hi there, knightsports do an uprated set of twin turbos if you can find them, there are also some other places that do uprated twins, the issue with the twin turbos is the space they take up, so there is only a certain size you can really fit in there lol

its quite hard and expensive to have 2 singles run sequentially. a big turbo with a small hotside .81 would spool up very well as mine does. The expense of a bespoke system to run two singles is not economical for most people as a good single setup is extremely hard to fault.

I think a lot of people go single as much for power as for reliability due to the reduced complexity of the system.

Personally I\'d prefer to stay with sequential twins for the pattern of delivery, but its a lot easier (and therefore cheaper) to source a decent second hand single kit than uprated twins.

Single is a lot more fun and simpler configuration
Carl Hayward does a non sequential conversion for twins, you could try that

non sequential is for losers who want to lose the first part of their powerband lol

When I was choosing an RX7 I figured that the best upgrade for an FD was a single turbo conversion, which is why I bought an FC that has a single turbo to begin with, design went backwards from the FC hehe not that im bias or anything :P

Revolution also have a high-flow twin turbo kit available now. Don\'t know how much it is, or how it compares to the KS ones.

I\'ve always toyed with making my own uprated twin turbo system running the stock solonoids etc. As this would keep the drivability of fun of twins but the power of a fairly large single..... hehe! might just hapen with the new engine ;)

it\'s not just spool that you have to consider low down - you still have the transition to deal with, and at 4K rpm you are on the secondary turbo anyway, so you have to wait for it to spin up.  Running the BNR turbos there is a hole in the boost pattern from 3,800 to 4,200 or so if you are cruising at that rpm range - but full boost is available from 2,800 rpm and they will run 320-330 bhp at the wheels on stock ports at a bar or so...

You could try finding a set of 99 spec twins as these are slightly better than the earlier ones and can give a little more power.
Might no of some for sale ;)

I\'m sure that they would flow a bit better, and if you have the turbo pack off the car then it\'s worth doing, otherwise I think it would be a lot of work for a very small gain.
