Title: how do you keep your emissions down?
Post by: RXSpeedy on September 16, 2009, 10:26:17 PM
I\'ve been researching for a while, still not very clear on how to go about things. Basically im looking at building a separate engine along with a single turbo kit and everything needed to get myself to 500. Now my big concern is how do some of you guys keep your emissions down without the AP/ACV? i know you can use the PFC to get within spec for Mot but im ideally looking for within spec emissions whilst on the road. Any info would be great.

From my understanding it requires a leaniant MOT man or even leaving the engine turned off.... but I\'m not a guru on this stuff ;)

Apparently someone suggested you run the fuel tank down and fill it with just enough alcohol to do the test lol sounds a bit dangerous for an MOT though lol I know that im going to have an MOT setting on my e-manage, basically maps the car to as stoich as possible on idle which is where they test the emissions and reduce the idle to as low as possible lol although im still running an air pump and I am gettiing 0.45% CO :)

LOL Jono i know what you mean, when i worked at Mazda my MOT\'s passed everytime ;) obviously. Don\'t like the idea of running low on fuel, I could of sworn i read somewhere that you can leave the Air pump on when running a single turbo? can\'t find it now so don\'t know if thats BS.

Im hoping to leave mine on, but if you take them off you can run a \'smog pump\' that is fitted to some US cars for emissions due to their inability to produce an engine less than 7 litres and having 8 pistons too many :rollin
The smog pump is just the electric version of the pulley air pump, I think theres is a write up on 1300cc.com about it

It would depend on where the single turbo fits, most of them require the airpump removed as its physicaly in the way of the inlet. Do you think the MOT man would belive you if you went "brum brum" and had the needle set at 1k?

Awesome vid the ITR was quality. The 1300cc.com was a good read though 10-15mins before the motor burns out if used to long lol would have to look into something a little more used to continuously running.

Can you not just lower the injector times at MOT time using a Commander?

they only tend to target those with clouds of smoke billowing out. Surely then you shouldnt be a target? And if you are I don\'t think there is a lot that can be done? I thought rotaries had a hard enough time passing emissions as standard - hence why mazda stopped importing them?

they should carry out a bet(basic emmisions test) test if its an import. the car should pass fine without fiddling
