\'tis a lovely car :yes. Even the rear seats are surprisingly comfortable :rollin. It\'s impressive how you made an already excellent car even nicer with a few touches like losing the chav lights and sorting out the engine bay and such. It\'ll be even nicer with a nice shiny new ported motor in there :D

For a while now my car has been using up coolent. No leaks have been found but after attending one show when it got very hot on the way in the engine started to only start up on one rotor so i was told that the water seals were on their way out. D\'oh!! :(
Maybe the 15 drag run in one day at Rotorstock didnt help to much :p
So i decided to get the engine out (with some help) and get that looked at by Era. So a day was sorted out and with Nik and Kieron we set to work :D

Started out looking fine to me :D
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Engine%20rebuild/DSC_2050.jpg)

But with lots of this....

...plenty of this....

... and even a little...

We eventually got it looking like this...

Ahh there\'s the missing bit :D
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Engine%20rebuild/09092009399.jpg)

Its scary when you see all your lovely parts scattered over the floor :o
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Engine%20rebuild/09092009396.jpg)

So with the engine in safe gorilla like hands ;) i set about tidying things up a little. Queue the polishing :D

Rear turbo pipe. This.....

... to this :D
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Engine%20rebuild/15092009409.jpg)

Ali side step :D
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Engine%20rebuild/15092009411.jpg)

And then got a little carried away and did the FPR a little too :D
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Engine%20rebuild/15092009417.jpg)

Seeing as they looked a little beyond my limited skills i\'ve sent the water pump housing, alternator and power steering plate off for polishing too :D
So thats how it stands now.
Touched up some rusty bits and bobs in the engine bay and now trying to figure out the dark art that is single turbos.

If anyone can think of anthing else i can do while the engine is out do please say :D

You might be able to get to the nuts to undo but it would be a right PITA.
I nearly bought a polish one a while back but didnt in the end as for the sake of the little bit you actually see when its on i didnt think it was worth the hassle of doing. But i polished this one up for the next owner to have cos if they\'re changing their turbos for my 99s you can get to it easily then :D

Title: Engine apart - OMG
Post by: Ada7 on October 16, 2009, 11:46:21 AM
Got the news back from Era the other day about my engine.I knew that it had been rebuilt at some time in the past and been street ported but no idea who did it. I was hoping it would just be a small water seal failure and so not much trouble at all. How wrong could i be. :(
Massive water seal failure on all plates. Era suggested that some of them look so bad and twisted that they could have been second hand seals used in the previous rebuild. All the apex seals were intact but one housing had a large grove cut in it by the exhaust port suggesting it was damaged in the past but still used even though its knackered
None of the ports had any form of finishing off, they were also not equal in size. The exhaust ports had no bevel cut into them as the stock ports. The result was that the one housing has picked up carbon and rubbish and has got bad scores in it,also theyare not equal in size.
I had been adviced by some very knowledgable people to use K-seal in the water system as this could help slow down or even stop any water leak. This has got in to all the water channels and looks to have infact increased the wear on the seals and acted like a grinding paste and scored all the plates.
So.. i\'ve had to have the plates sent off to be resurfaced and buy 2 housings. :(
Luckily the rotors are ok, although one has a slight bang on it, but apparently its ok.
Felt really fduk\'d off with this news as you can imagine but now being positive and now know its going to be done a thousand times better once done :D

Well today was hard work thanks to the weather and the bloody clutch
We did manage to do all the hard heavy work and get the engine in, the clutch lined up and bolted back on the flywheel and then the turbo kit mocked up to see if it fitted ok. It looks a very tight fit

Here\'s how it looks after today

The pipes for the water heater matrix rub up against the turbo housing cos the turbo sits so far back.

Still got plenty to do. All the electrical stuff (including the loom... **glup**), fuel, coolent and oil lines need connecting and then just tidying it all up, but it\'s getting there bit by bit.
Big thanks to Nic for coming up to help again, you\'re a top mate. :D

No need to thank me, mate, all I did was stand around eating doughnuts and offering fatuous sarcastic advice :D Kieron\'s the hero of the hour, he was the one who finally managed to get the $*&?!ing clutch bolts sorted after God knows how long of us faffing around with \'em :god

Another top day out, not an unqualified success, shame we couldn\'t get it all done (or a bit more done anyway) but it was so cold and wet it sorta sapped all the energy out of you. Well, it did me anyway...I\'m not as young as I used to be, y\'know. And as for that apalling smell, well, I\'ve not been well, y\'know :o

...and finally, this is the "road" out of the lock-up...well it used to be a road, it\'s a river now  Was a bit touch and go if the li\'l dude\'s Mugen intake was just gonna suck a gallon of this up and knacker the whole job up there, it\'s mounted right at the bottom of the engine bay aparently

Not muched happend for a while on this due to work, the weather and the festive period but i thought i\'d do a little update anyway. Have been collecting parts mainly and doing some small bits when i can.
Have got all the electrical stuff connected back up. Blocked up various, now unused, water out lets on the engine with some hose, bolts and jubliee clips. Looks a bit rough but will do for now and should hold fine. Got the manifold fully wrapped up now and just going to order new studs and nuts to bolts it on with.
To slove the problem of the turbo housing hitting the solid water pipe for the heater matrix i\'m gonna cut it part of the way back and then re route some hose around that side of the engine bay and so back to the block again. Got this bits to help with that..
Also i decided to get a Pineapple Racing water pump pulley set. Looks an easy item to bolt on and very nicely made :D
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Engine%20rebuild/20012010708.jpg)
Also changing up my intercooler for a bigger one and got this off Kieron\'s car when he was breaking it up. Just need to work out a way of mounting it V style now
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Engine%20rebuild/20012010706.jpg)
Just have to still sort out a problem in matching up my new larger diameter downpipe and mid pipe, turbo and wastegate on and set up (the turbo oil lines still need sorting out) and then put back in the radiator and mount the intercooler and it should be ready to start up again :D

Get it finished, man :Giggle. Nice intercooler!

What other stuff has the li\'l dude got still lying about that one might prevail upon him to part with cheap, like? I might be tempted to make him a cheeky offer on that jack if he\'s still got it:mmmm

I havent been over there for a while now (hoping the roof hasnt caved in with the weight of the snow) so not sure what bits he has left for sale. I know there\'s a gearbox there and some door shells. Can ask about the jack if you want.

Another thing i\'ve remembered i need to sort out is the heat sheilding from the turbo. Might go for a beanie and some of that thermo sleeve stuff you recommend from Demon Tweaks (just in black-got to be different) :D
Will probably change the blue hoses on the new intercooler for red ones eventually.

I might have some leftover red joiners in Shelob\'s lair you could use. If you can let me know the diameters you need, I\'ll have a look-see. Beanies are cool, in more ways than one. Funky as well as cool, innit!

After the weather we\'ve had lately it does make me laugh that i\'m worried about heat :p
A beanie and some thermo sleeve might be enough i think. Can always add more later on if need be.
Will measure up the pipes and let you know mate. Have got the red ones from my old cooler still so thats a start :D
My birthday soon, what should i ask for?:p

I\'ve got a long weekend next week, so if you\'ve a spare day I could always potter up and lend a hand getting some stuff done? Always seem less painful when errr, the pain\'s shared out a bit

Ok, managed to get over to the barn yesterday for the first time this year and got a lot done. Had collected lots of bits so was dying to get to work on it again. But first off we had a couple of new neighbours to say hello to and befriend :D
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Engine%20rebuild/06022010718.jpg)
Yes that is a Land Rover roof :p

So to the work. First i re-heat wrapped the down pipe. Annoyingly was about 2 foot short but will be fine as its the furthest end left uncovered :)
Then i fitted the Pineapple Racing pulley. Was very easy to do once i worked out which points to screw the bracket to. Does look good
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Engine%20rebuild/06022010722.jpg)

Then i test fitted the turbo on so i could re route the water matrix pipe that was hitting the cold side housing. Had to cut the hard pipe back a bit and run the new flexible hose further up the side of the bay and then down to the engine block again. Then i got the rad fitted back in. Loved how easy that was :D
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Engine%20rebuild/06022010723.jpg)

Finally then i placed the new intercooler on to see how much space i had left and how tight the hoses are going to be. Should be ok with a little twist and turn here and there :D

So all thats left is to sort out the oil feed and return lines for the turbo and screw it all up once and for all, then sort the intercooler hoses out and finally sort the exhaust sizing problem out. With a couple of new gaskets here and there its job done and time to start it back up again... as long as the battery isnt knackered :D

Well i\'ve done all i can now with my car so its getting picked up on tuesday and trailered down to Reworx for them to finish everything off.
There\'s bound to be a few (lots) of bits i\'ve missed or got wrong so i\'m sure they\'ll have a good look around it and get everything sorted.
Its got the old intercooler on at the mo but will ask them to get the new one mounted up and pipes sorted out for it. Then its just to match up the downpipe and midpipe and get a base map on it so i can then run in the engine.
Getting really excited about it being back on the road now :D

Had a few other bits i had to do today and actually haven\'t really done that many miles. Is very tempting to put my foot to the floor and see what it\'ll do now but gonna take it easy. I get a little bit of turbo noise now and again and it so cool
It has a very slight hunt in the idle but thinking that could just be the ECU relearning a little.
I had a couple of bits sent away for polishing and they look incredible, like they\'ve been chromed. Annoyingly it make the rest look half hearted now :o
Its got the old intercooler as the new one i got might be a little big and was gonna be a lot of work to fit by Reworx so i\'m probably gonna be on the look out for a proper V mount one.

Thread revival :D
Ok, i\'ve been trying to get stuff together to finally be able to get the car ready for mapping.
Finally got a twin plate clutch and along with a radtec V-mount myself and Kieron were planning to fit it all today. As it turned out the V-mount was enough work for us for one day (even with the help of Lewis sorting out the electric fans) and we decided it would be best to get reworx to do the clutch. Better safe than sorry (Told you so i hear you all cry :o:()

I know i\'m going to have to uprate the fueling and so i\'ve got some 1680cc injectors and waiting for a fuel rail to put them in. Once thats here i can get the car to reworx have them do the clutch, secondary fuel set up (all the connectors and hoses) with fuel pump and then finally map the beast :D

Anyway, here\'s some pictures of how the V-mount looks now :D

Well back home now and what a day its been. I\'ve been up for 28 hours now and absolutely knackered but got a huge grin on my face from the drive home.
First off i\'ve got to thank Chris and Geoff from Reworx so much for all the work they did today on my car and of course BIG hugs, tugs and love for the Oldone himself Era for building me the strong engine i have :D:D

First of all was fitting the twin plate clutch i got. Annoyingly i wasn\'t sent half the stuff that was supposed to be with it. All the bolts, fixing and converter for it were missing but thankfully Chris was able to route through many mystical and magical boxes and pull out all the bits i needed to get it on. I so glad i didn\'t attempt this at the barn now as i had no idea how much work in involved in getting the box, clutch and flywheel off. The fdukin flywheel nut just wouldn\'t budge at all! :o

With that done and the box back on it was on to the fueling. One of Kev\'s Billet Blitz fuel rails with some 1680cc injectors and some nice connectors to go with it was fitted as well as all the lines for the boost controller sorted out. I\'d bought along a walbro 040 pump on the tank bracket just ready to drop in but it turns out i already have one so that\'ll be up for sale soon :D
A quick oil and filter change and a couple of other bits and it was all ready for the mapping :D

Geoff got it all dialed in pretty quickly and gave it a few runs to see what figures we had. It sounds SOooooo loud in there and the turbo spooling up is, and i dont use this word often.... awesome :D
Sadly the 040 pump wasn\'t man enough for my ports and turbo and so we only got a max of 355rwhp at 0.8 bar. All the solinoids and live feeds to the pump were good so nothing to worry about there. We were all a little disappointed but Geoff seems to feel that with a bigger pump (044) and another tweek on the roller that it will easily make 400 and could go as far as 430-450 when up to 1.1bar boost :D

All i will say about the drive home is that people weren\'t getting out of the way of the massive grin on my face quick enough! :D The power comes in so smooth and just keeps building to the 6,500rpm limiter that Geoff put on for now (just so not to run lean). the clutch will take a bit of getting used to (as will watching the fuel gauge drop even quicker now :o) but by god its good fun :D

Gotta go now as got to get ready for going out (god knows how i\'m gonna stay awake) but for now all i\'ll say is i\'m loving the single life :p :D:D:D

Also while i\'m off this week i plan to (hopefully) finally fit my Knight Sports Twin Pop ups. Thinking i might get some HIDs to go with them.
From advice from Phil i need H3 fitting with what ever temp bulbs to go with it so thinking between kits like these on eBay.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260741827880&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Any more advice anyone can give about these would be great :D
Got a couple of other little bits to add and touch up too while i can. Plus now after the Brighton run on sunday i\'ve got to get my front bumper repaired and resprayed due to a small arguement with a kerb!:(

Thats it for now, as i said, not much changed or happened.
Will let you all know what power figures i get tuesday once the pump in sorted out

Well not a very productive day today in the end.
Me and Nik were going to finally get my Knight Sports lights on and also fit the HID kit i\'d got too. Well thats what we thought...
In the end it became a battle between us and some bloody stubben bolts and screws that just wouldn\'t undo (plus me also being an idiot and geting a rachet spanner stuck between the light unit and my intercooler, resulting in me having to remove said intercooler to get spanner out :() so we ended up after a good few hours more or less where we started.
Only good points were that i fitted some LED bulbs to the side lights and got my Dragon Performance tensioner pulley on :)
Oh well, hope tomorrow is a better day at ReWorx :D
Photos please Nik :D

Lol, what a fduking frustrating day. Just hours spent chasing our tails in ever decreasing circles. The spanner was just funny by that stage, it had undone the bolt right to the point where it was up against the IC end tank...and that was it. Cos it\'s not a reversible spanner you have to take it off the bolt and flip it over to do the bolt up again, which we couldn\'t cos the spanner wouldn\'t do up the bolt again without flipping it over which we couldn\'t do because the bolt stuck out too far to get the spanner off....aaarrrrrrgh! Endless loop

Plus the fact that every single fduking fastener seemed to have irretreviably welded itself to its receptacle and the bizarre wiring for the Knightsports lights that seems to be more complex than rocket surgery errrr brain science? Meant we gave up in disgust and put it all back (almost) as it was :( Whoever at Mazda thought of those Eeezzzeee-rust phillips head screws holding the light covers on need killing for crimes against amateur mechanics

Tried everything, here a random fat old silver-haired bald bloke tries an impact driver on them

some of the fasteners just wouldn\'t give up, even after blowtorch, dremelling, drilling, stud extractors and sheer Herculesian brute force. We did eventually get one side off, here the car is trying for a starring role in the "recognise the first signs of a stroke" adverts
(http://i668.photobucket.com/albums/vv43/Nik_da_Greek/Misc%20car%20pics/IMG_0430.jpg)

And we even got as far as trial-fitting the KS lights before getting the spanner stuck and having to diassemble the entire engine bay to get it out :o
(http://i668.photobucket.com/albums/vv43/Nik_da_Greek/Misc%20car%20pics/IMG_0433.jpg)

Look nice, yeah? However, we just ran out of time to get it finished with all the wiring that would need doing as well, so here Adam is in his best mechanics\' pose putting it all back to stock :(
(http://i668.photobucket.com/albums/vv43/Nik_da_Greek/Misc%20car%20pics/IMG_0437.jpg)

Still a lovely lookin car from most any angle though, innit!

Not a total waste, nice shiny billet Dragon pulley was a minor triumph
(http://i668.photobucket.com/albums/vv43/Nik_da_Greek/Misc%20car%20pics/IMG_0439.jpg)

PLEASE, kids, don\'t try this at home as a method of cleaning your pulleys

Yeh holding Niah was the scaryist part of the day for me, even worse than cleaning up the pulleys with the engine running :p
We should of just got both KS light units trial fitted in and left them like that (never mind all the covers and electrics rubbish). It looks quite good just as it is there :p
Loving the new LED side lights, pictures look great. Cheers dude :D

Hope tomorrow at RE:Worx has a happier ending than today for you dude. Still, look at it this way....we only have four fasteners still to un-seize now, so we\'re more than half-way there. Another week or so I reckon we\'ll have cracked it :o

Ok, today had its ups and downs. Started off with fitting of the Da-31 fuel pump i got off ebay. This didn\'t go well at all. It just didn\'t pump at all. Geff said it was no better than a standard pump and not as good as the walbro i was trying to improve on.
It could of been a faulty unit, but one aborted run and 88bhp isn\'t good. Will call the company i got it from and hope i can get my money back.

Old vs new

Anyway, Geff ordered in a new Bosch 044 for me and they fitted that in no time and got on with the mapping again.

And the results.... :D

This is engine power, so approx 370rwhp @1bar boost:D
I\'m happy with that. not really looking for huge figures (if i was i\'d of bought a bigger turbo and stuff) but just to make the most of what i have now. Should go well on the strip me thinks :D

Also while i was there i got to meet Mattie and see his awesome track car. Looks amazing :D

Speaking to Geff about the amount of smoke my car makes he thinks it could be down to the amount of premix i\'m using. I put 500ml in per 50 litres the amount many have recommended. He suggested it was to much and to half this and see what happens
Another bonus for today was i got an Apexi commander at last. Yippy!!!

Thought i\'d try my hand at a bit of painting seeing as i had a few days off.
I\'ve now got some drag tyres on some standard wheels and while the tyres are fine the wheels were a bit chipped up after being painted black at some point.
First off i gave the tyres a sporty look by painted the lettering on them. Really liked this but it just highlighted the condition on the wheels more.

So out with the sand paper and gave them a respray in black
Had some help alone the way from Ollie :D

Much better, but not quite finished yet.
Want them to stand out a little more so had the idea to paint the spokes red by following the lines already on them so it came to a point at the center.

So next came a lot of taping off and covering up

Then out with the red paint
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Rex%20II/cb06854a.jpg)

Annoyingly (VERY) the first coat didn\'t take at all...

... So i had to rub it back and start again on the spokes. Just for that added touch i also did the center capes to match

The wheels are by no means perfect at all (in fact i\'m gonna have to go over a few bits where the paint has over sprayed or lifted off when removing the tape) but from a distance and considering its the first time i\'ve tried anything like this i thought they came out ok...

Should be ok on the strip me thinks :D

Fitted my drag wheels today to make sure there\'d be no problems once at the Pod. Only problem i had was getting off the Drift Spec Wheel nuts i had on there. They were on very tight and a few nearly rounded off as the metal is very soft. But luckily got them all off and will be using standard ones on there from now on as the are much tougher.

Anyway... what you think of them fitted?

I bought an abrasive and polishing kit (lots of different grades of abrasives and polish) and used it on a polishing machine.
Then just used autosol, a bucket of elbow grease and a few spare hours to keep it looking good (this is the hard part as once its all back together its near impossible to get to all the arkward bits to keep it looking good)
Have a look here... http://www.fduk.org/forum/showthread.php?t=16522&highlight=polish

Run one from japshow the other weekend.
Was so close to beating my PB with this run. A 13.2 @ 115mph. not really noticable but i had a bad start with lots of spin and tramping off the line. Not in the 12s but showing good power with the speed so hopefully better times to come once i can sort my starts out

LOL now I know why you had no grip!!! where was the second gear burnout? hardly any revs on the launch!! you boged off the line, you need at least 6.5K. Plus you were short shifting, didnt even hear the buzzer

That run was on street tyres so no point warming them up. Yeh i bogged and then spun and so had to drop the revs slightly. Was my first run in nearly 2 years so was taking it fairly easy really.
I think i need a big tacho so i can see the revs as most of mine is covered up by the steering wheel

Thanks for your support though Blitzy :D

Right, finally got around to fitting my Knight sports headlights. Myself and Nik had spent one day trying to sort things out but thanks to rusted screws and a very tight fitting intercooler with got in the way of the mounting bolts we didn\'t it al done.
So the other week i had another go by myself (never good to leave me alone with tools but i did my best).

First i had to drill out some rusted light cover screws so i could get the cover off and finally get the passenger side backet out.

The problem child mocking me
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Rex%20II/IMG_0718.jpg)

Finally off and ready to put in the KS units
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Rex%20II/IMG_0720.jpg)

Then there was this little lot to figure out
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Rex%20II/IMG_0730.jpg)

Annoyingly I had to keep taking out the intercooler everytime I changed the lights (which also meant moving a rad hose to) as it\'s such a tight fit that you can\'t get to one of the pivot bolts on the light craddle.

Electrics figured out and it all works :D
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Rex%20II/IMG_0737.jpg)

So out with the intercooler so as to bolt the cradles down and then fit the front covers.

And that\'s as far as I got by myself. It was then down to see Nik again on another day and get him to help me cut the mounting points on the top covers and repeat all the above a few times so as to fit the units and aline al the bits together

We didn\'t get any pictures of our working that day apart form this one in the light of the lights fully fitted...

but Nik got some at night when i was setting off for home. Hopehe doesnt mind me quoting his post from fduk so you can see his pictures..

Quote from: Lucky;246984Quick sneaky update of Adman\'s thread for him while he\'s driving home lol. Hopefully he\'ll still be in a good mood when he gets there and not grumpy cos his lights just failed completely on a dark country road or one of the headlight covers we spend half the day fitting just blew off and wound up under a giant truck or something....

What the hell am I on about? The Knighsport lights finally gave into our persistance and all-round amazingness :D. After our epic failure last time around we weren\'t to be beaten. I say we, in fact Ada had already done all the hard owrk, fitting the light assemblies and getting the unfathomable Jap-spec wiring weirdness sorted out... my main contribution was to have some man-up spray and dremel the headlight covers so they\'d fit

(I think he was scared, personally, but don\'t say I told you) :D

Anyhoo, they\'re on, they all work, the covers fit perfick, we\'re getting properly quick at dismantling and re-fitting the V-mount to get to the one bloody bolt that\'s impossible otherwise, and they look bloody fantastic  Dunno why people grumble about them being feeble, these are like properly retina-melting bright, especially on high beam. Like a total spazz, I forgot to take any pics until after it got dark, so the only ones I can post are of them being really bright errm, in the dark :o

Dipped beam

High beam
(http://i668.photobucket.com/albums/vv43/Nik_da_Greek/Misc%20car%20pics/fullbeam.jpg)

Top day messing around with cars as always, and I managed to not faint, so that was a bonus too :D Much love

So thats them finally finally finished. Well, apart from alining the beams for the next MOT :D

i remember seeing this car at brooklands about two years ago(i think the front bumper was ropey) ,its come on so well its a real proper bit of kit now,and all that elbow grease and polishing has paid off its good to see people still put the work in them selves rather then just drop them off at a tuners with a blank cheque.
im building a similar fd at the mo and and it gives you a lot of will to get it done seeing yours,

Little things like getting a polished rad cover, tiding up the electrical in the engine bay and new intercooler pipes will keep me busy for a while. I\'m not really known for working quickly on stuff ha ha

Not sure my bumper has ever been ropey

I am thinking of doing that for the summer. Boot plastics and rear seats should loose me a little weight and i can always put them back in at any point. Also getting hold of some standard shocks might help a bit i\'ve been told.
Going to try and sort my brakes out so it\'ll hold on the start line better under load. It creeps at the moment so need the brakes to bite harder.
Also want to give it a full service. All fluids.. engine, box and diff.
I\'ve also been thinking about getting a couple of gauges. EGT and wideband so it can be monitored betterer.
After that... who knows. Water injection and more boost maybe??

Thats the problem, cant have both feet of 3 pedels. I hold it on the hand break on the line but its not strong enough and creeps foward
Would the EGT not go in the downpipe?

Yes but if your wanting to use the EGT to help with power production they need to be before the turbo so you can monitor what you injectors are doing by looking at the temps.

WI will bring the temps down if you get that which will help lean out the mixture a bit to gain HP.

I thought you meant the brakes for a burn out?

To hold the car on the line you could get a hydro hand brake. Prety cheap and it will hold the car dead on the line.

Not heard of a hydro brake. Do you have any links?

I\'m mean a hydraulic rear hand brake. Like what the drift boys use. Trust me it will work good

Seen the driftworks one. Do you know if they are easy to fit?
Would the brakes need rebleeding?

You will need to rebleed if you go hydro as you will be detouring the brake lines. Shouldn\'t be too hard to do as long as you have a brake line flare kit.

They do have a line kit in their store too.
Think things over now about this as other seem to think its a bit over kill for my needs as you saw.
Cant seem to find the spin turn knob Colum mentioned though :o

I know they do but I think it\'s something so simple. And it will be good if you wana do some show off 180s at local meets ;) lmao. It will also clean up rear discs as I remember mine being only partially used.

Ian uses the hydro hand brake for Haywards car and he said it was the easiest way to load everything up. Probably loaded the car up more then most as a hydro is stronger than a cable brake. Less initial stress on the gear box and diff when you launch

Just seen the driftworks spin knob. For the sake of £10 i\'ll give that a go and tighen up the cable more and see how i get on next time. If i still have issues then maybe i\'ll man up to the hydro kit.
Line lock might be on the cards too as that doesn\'t look to pricey... but then there\'s fitting it :o

Line lock is a good option, get those tyres hot and sticky for sure.

A tenner is cheaper than the hydro for sure. Get some traffic light practice in.

Little update, another sticker one.
Seeing some guys were talking the :censored::censored::censored::censored: out of my wheels i thought i\'d carry on the joke and get some stickers made up for them.
Pete (V8-fd) made them for me and i can\'t praise him enough for sorting them out and going though bits again and again with me.
Anyway... here they are :)

What you think?
The paint will be touched up a bit, but they are only drag wheels so not needing to be show quality.

First off i\'d just like to say that yes i\'m an idiot and should know better.

Went to get in my car this morning to take it for a drive and the battery was flat. This has happened a little lately due to it being a ridiculously small battery and the cold weather getting to it. Luckily i was meeting my parents in the village and a quick phone call to them diverted them my way.
Once the arrived a quick jump start off my dads car and i got mine going again. All good i thought....

Sadly not. I was taking the jump leads off when all of a sudden i noticed a huge cloud of white smoke coming out from under the bonnet. :censored::censored::censored::censored:!!!!! (I thought). Ran around and turned the car off and let the smoke blow away. Opened the bonnet to find rubber everywhere. The crank pulley had obviuosly come away, snapped in two and got curled up around itself.

As you can see, a right mess!
So now began the hunt to find a replacement. Seeing as i\'ve got rid of the air con pump and fitted a pineapple racing idle pulley kit i knew it would\'t be easy getting a correct replacement. I found out the length i needed online and then tried every motor factors i knew to see if they had one. No one did and in the end i have had to order one in at Halfords.

So why would the belt come off you maybe asking by now.

Well... lately i\'ve been having to top the water up every now and again and i think this might have diluted the coolent i had in the water system down to next to nothing. Seeing as the temps have dropped so much over the last few nights the water had frozen in the rad pipes and maybe the water pump itself (maybe even around the whole engine). When i turned the engine on i think the pulley was stuck and this caused the belt to rub untill it came off and snapped.
I next had to thaw out the pipes the best i could (Coolent i\'d bought in Halfords) and then with a bit of advice from the Oldone and incouragement from Nik da, via texts, I emptied out the water system and have left it for now till the new belt arrives and i can see if anything has been damaged inturnally.

Lovely colour dont you think?

Hopefully nothing bad has happened.

So the lesson for you all today is.... dont forget to add coolent to the water system. It can save you a whole lot of hassle trying to fix anything that may break and a few days of worry to find out if anything bad has happened to the block.

Keep your fingers crossed for me please :o

Couple of updates for those interested :)

Begining of March...

Finally got my Rexy fixed up today.
Had to cut up the standard matrix hoses a bit so they\'d loop up and bypass going into the bulkhead and just around the engine instead. Getting to the bottom hose on the block is a right PITA though. Just hope i\'ve got it on strong enough as doing it back up was a nightmare
No heating now but thats not really a major issue.
Just take it for a spin and it feels so good to drive again
Now i can get back to trying to find time to do a full service on it and other bits i\'ve got lined up too :D

Last week...

Little update. Nothing to do with the car as such but had to get one of these for on the strip...

Had to make it my own :D

As for the car, found out its got a crack in the manifold so deciding what to do there. Might get it welded up again for now and see what happens at a later date.

Yesterday...

Ka-pow!! :D

Cheers Rob for this :Thumbs-up

Have to say a big thanks to Andy (a.tapos) at AMT (http://www.amt-fordmazda.co.uk/) I went and saw him last week and he helped me out with some bits i\'ve been meaning to do to my car. Great guy and really helpful and saved me a lot of time and effort.

Been a bit (very) slack in updating this... :o

So back in November, after finding out my engine had lost compression on the rear rotor, and moving house, it was time to get the block out....

Massive thanks to Andy (a.tapos) for today (November). With his help (to be fair he did almost all of it) we got the engine out of my car in no time at all. I\'ve heard of people saying they\'ve got engines out in a few hours and always taken it with a pinch of salt but after only about an hour and a half the engine was out and in the garage stripped down :D
It was over so quick i didn\'t even get chance to get any pictures... Nik where were you when i needed you :p
This is all i got...

This....

To this.... is no time at all :D
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Rex%20II/IMG_1874.jpg)

Lots to do and sort out now with the car as well as getting the engine over to Era to see whats happen and what i can do.
Again, big thanks Andy.

The engine was taken over to Era\'s not long after and over time I\'ve thought about the spec I wanted to go and saving up for the parts.
Decided to go half bridge with SCR seals all around and clearenced rotors. All parts for this have been bought and delivered so the engine will be all done sometime soon. Also in the mean time I\'ve been buying other parts to get some bits up to spec. Bought a hurst line lock from the states. Automotive FPR was next followed quickly by a 3 bar map senor. There will be water injection and maybe another major change for the interior. These are all to be sorted out over time. I\'m not going to rush though as I don\'t really see the car being out for the rest of the year now. I want to tidy up the engine bay as well so the ABS will be going to make space and i\'ll try and move some fuse boxes around too. To put it bluntly, there\'s a long list of stuff that needs doing :p

The next time the car saw daylight was the end of June this year :o ...

Well today I actually got the car out of the garage for the first time this year and with a lot of help from Nik I managed to get one thing crossed of my long list of stuff I want to do. A lot of sweat and some blood spilt but the results were worth it I think.
Que Nik\'s pictures :D....

Quote from: Lucky;409635Well, Photobucket seems to be working, or as working as it gets nowadays, so here we are. Prepare to be disappointed, lol.

I was lured up to Ada\'s by the promise of bacon and hegg sarndwiches, which is pretty much all it takes. The downside was to earn them I had to help swap the carpet over in his car. Sounds easy when you say it quickly... Of course, to do this it requires pretty much taking every bit of interior out, a job made more annoying by the fact both of us are quite large objects, the FD is quite a small car and Adam\'s one has a cage as an extra hazard

(http://i668.photobucket.com/albums/vv43/Nik_da_Greek/FLUB/monkey_zpsd2eea598.jpg) (http://s668.photobucket.com/user/Nik_da_Greek/media/FLUB/monkey_zpsd2eea598.jpg.html)

Still, there\'s nothing hard about stripping the panelwork and seats, just time-consuming and there are a lot of fasteners to lose in the process. Here\'s a portrait of the artist deep in thought and hard at work, so much so he\'s not even in focus. It\'s arty, actually.

(http://i668.photobucket.com/albums/vv43/Nik_da_Greek/FLUB/itsallablur_zpsb56f5699.jpg) (http://s668.photobucket.com/user/Nik_da_Greek/media/FLUB/itsallablur_zpsb56f5699.jpg.html)

This is me, pretending to work. It\'s strange, cos I don\'t remember taking this one.

(http://i668.photobucket.com/albums/vv43/Nik_da_Greek/FLUB/me_zpsd65cdf01.jpg) (http://s668.photobucket.com/user/Nik_da_Greek/media/FLUB/me_zpsd65cdf01.jpg.html)

The main annoyance at this stage came from the fact a previous owner had replaced some of the seatbelt mounting points with eye-bolts, and since they\'d been in for several years they really didn\'t want to undo now. One side came out reasonably easy (my one, I might add :p) but the other just wasn\'t budging and since the only way of undoing them was to either put a prybar through the loop (which was difficult due to narrow access or use molegrips (which were bending quite alarmingly, the bolt was that tight) we had to get ingenious on it. Fortunately there were some workmen putting a new door in the house, so we blagged their wrecking bar off them and used that!

(http://i668.photobucket.com/albums/vv43/Nik_da_Greek/FLUB/wrecking_zps31f71d63.jpg) (http://s668.photobucket.com/user/Nik_da_Greek/media/FLUB/wrecking_zps31f71d63.jpg.html)

Looks like the zombie apocalypse started in the back of an FD! At least it got trapped in the cage, lol

*ahem* anyway, after ages of faffing about we ended up with this

(http://i668.photobucket.com/albums/vv43/Nik_da_Greek/FLUB/spreading_zpsf48a59d9.jpg) (http://s668.photobucket.com/user/Nik_da_Greek/media/FLUB/spreading_zpsf48a59d9.jpg.html)

a whole load of FD insides spread over a massive area... and this

(http://i668.photobucket.com/albums/vv43/Nik_da_Greek/FLUB/ugly_zps0d284df2.jpg) (http://s668.photobucket.com/user/Nik_da_Greek/media/FLUB/ugly_zps0d284df2.jpg.html)

A really ugly-looking empty interior almost bereft of carpet. Here we hit the second and most non-bodacious snag. For those who\'ve never had to take an FD carpet out (and I\'d advise you keep it that way if at all possible) you need to realise it goes all the way under the dash as far as the firewall, and it\'s all one piece, just holes cutout for the gearshifter aperture. So there\'s about a millimetre\'s clearance in places between the underside of all the :censored::censored::censored::censored: Mazda hid up under the dash and the carpet, and it\'s littered with extra hazards like studs welded onto the tub for things like footrests etc, and bits of heatshielding rivetted on and stuff. This means that to get it over the transmission tunnel to one side or the other is almost impossible. We tried everything we could think of; slicing up the carpet to get it past obstacles, taking out most of the dash support bolts to make it give a bit, phoning a friend, lol.

well, we rang Dale (I think he suggested hitting it with a chair or something) and Andy T , who suggested dropping the steering column to give the dash a bit more play... a tactic which made fdukall difference but did give us some more really annoying and inaccessible bolts that we had to do back up again later. By now we had all but about one square foot out, the most irritating bit right under the dash, on top of the trans tunnel behind the centre console. We were debating whether we were going to have to take the entire :censored::censored::censored::censored:ing dash out or just leave the bit of carpet wedged in there. When I gave it one last try, fueled by annoyance, frustration and a desperate desire to NOT take the dash out.

Success at last, if you can call success the last bit of carpet suddenly coming free, thus meaning I smashed my forearm into the razor-sharp edge of the door aperture. Once I\'d stopped crying it was now a small matter to get the new one back in, made easier by the fact the previous owner of it had very helpfully cut it around all the really nadgery bits that had given us so much trouble getting out. I honestly don\'t think it would have been possible to get it in over the trans tunnel without taking the entire dash out.

Anyway, I\'ve been talking for a while so have another picture, here\'s Ada-san doing the domestic chores, lol

(http://i668.photobucket.com/albums/vv43/Nik_da_Greek/FLUB/hoovering_zpsd481a414.jpg) (http://s668.photobucket.com/user/Nik_da_Greek/media/FLUB/hoovering_zpsd481a414.jpg.html)

I didn\'t take as many photos as I should have done, really, mostly because half the day I was wedged upside-down in a really small space trying to remove impossible bits of carpet, so this story jumps about a bit, sorry. But here\'s one of it before we started putting all the trim back in

(http://i668.photobucket.com/albums/vv43/Nik_da_Greek/FLUB/in_zpse4f1dade.jpg) (http://s668.photobucket.com/user/Nik_da_Greek/media/FLUB/in_zpse4f1dade.jpg.html)

And then shazam! Finished :o  Fair to say I do suck a bit at chronicling stuff, lol

Well, I think so, even though I\'ve got a big chunk missing out of one arm and one shin, makes a massive difference and really lightens/brightens the interior up. And I got a bacon and hegg sarndwich for my pains, so happy days :D Anyway, as my old tapdancing teacher always used to say, always leave them wanting more and always end on a penguin*

(http://i668.photobucket.com/albums/vv43/Nik_da_Greek/FLUB/beaky_zps1aa9dc1e.jpg) (http://s668.photobucket.com/user/Nik_da_Greek/media/FLUB/beaky_zps1aa9dc1e.jpg.html)

*some of this might not be true

I have wanted red carpet in my car for as long as I can remember owning an FD so for me this was a massive and great addition :D

One last update. This was at the end of last month....

Got another point completed (almost) off my To Do list today.
I\'d bought some new aero catches for my bonnet ages ago but have never gotten round to fitting them. Well today Hannah took Our Kid out for a stroll and so left me home alone with a few hours to spare to try and not make a huge mess of my bonnet. I know this isn\'t exactly a major job but seeing as I\'ve never done any body work type stuff and I was going to be putting two big holes in a bonnet I love then it was a little scary
I didn\'t take a picture of the pins I already had but they were very small and had started to rust and look tatty. In a way I was lucky someone had already fitted them as it meant I already had the holes where the pins would come up through the bonnet. All I had to do then was mark up where the new catches would be, make sure they were straight and even, cut the holes and fit them in. Simples :D

Bonnet off and old pins drilled out
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Rex%20II/DSC_0463_zpsfa24fd13.jpg) (http://s436.photobucket.com/user/Adam-Blackshaw/media/Rex%20II/DSC_0463_zpsfa24fd13.jpg.html)

Its seems someone called REG has something to do with making these new ones :p
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Rex%20II/DSC_0464_zpsb2d712b1.jpg) (http://s436.photobucket.com/user/Adam-Blackshaw/media/Rex%20II/DSC_0464_zpsb2d712b1.jpg.html)

Our Kid came home earlier than I thought but that was cool as he could lend me a hand :D
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Rex%20II/DSC_0465_zpsec9047dd.jpg) (http://s436.photobucket.com/user/Adam-Blackshaw/media/Rex%20II/DSC_0465_zpsec9047dd.jpg.html)

With the holes for the catches marked up it was time for a bit of Dutch courage in the shape of lunch before I took the plunge and started cutting
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Rex%20II/DSC_0467_zps064ad5fb.jpg) (http://s436.photobucket.com/user/Adam-Blackshaw/media/Rex%20II/DSC_0467_zps064ad5fb.jpg.html)
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Rex%20II/DSC_0466_zps45bfff3f.jpg) (http://s436.photobucket.com/user/Adam-Blackshaw/media/Rex%20II/DSC_0466_zps45bfff3f.jpg.html)

The instructions had said that the catches would be better with the smaller end facing the front of the car. Due to where the pins would be coming up through the bonnet I couldn\'t do it that way as they\'d not fit on the bonney right and look crap
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Rex%20II/DSC_0469_zpsde67dfee.jpg) (http://s436.photobucket.com/user/Adam-Blackshaw/media/Rex%20II/DSC_0469_zpsde67dfee.jpg.html)

So with a steady hand it was time to unleash the dremmel and get with the cutting
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Rex%20II/DSC_0470_zps281ae1b2.jpg) (http://s436.photobucket.com/user/Adam-Blackshaw/media/Rex%20II/DSC_0470_zps281ae1b2.jpg.html)

With the top skin cut I was left with how to match up the bottom. I just had the idea of making loads of small hole with a drill to make out the shape on the underside and then cut this straight again with the dremmel.
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Rex%20II/DSC_0471_zps1aa5bc5b.jpg) (http://s436.photobucket.com/user/Adam-Blackshaw/media/Rex%20II/DSC_0471_zps1aa5bc5b.jpg.html)

With a little sanding down of the edges and widening of the holes to allow for the screws to fit in the catches just dropped in to place. I did make a stupid mistake of fitting them in but forgot to remove the masking tape i\'d used so had to undo the screws again and take them off, remove the tape to then fit them back on again. But once done they look great and are damn straight too :D
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Rex%20II/DSC_0472_zpsc58daf0d.jpg) (http://s436.photobucket.com/user/Adam-Blackshaw/media/Rex%20II/DSC_0472_zpsc58daf0d.jpg.html)

It was just a matter of fitting the new pins in the bay and job done.... Well almost
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Rex%20II/DSC_0468_zps371779c7.jpg) (http://s436.photobucket.com/user/Adam-Blackshaw/media/Rex%20II/DSC_0468_zps371779c7.jpg.html)

I just ran out of time to get the pins at the right height to be able to lock the catches but that shouldn\'t take to long now they\'re in :D
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/Rex%20II/DSC_0473_zps0b1b7385.jpg) (http://s436.photobucket.com/user/Adam-Blackshaw/media/Rex%20II/DSC_0473_zps0b1b7385.jpg.html)

Happy days and a job well done I thought. Yes the car is damn dirty but no point cleaning it yet as I just got rolled back into the garage till the next time I get to work on it again
My only bit of advice I give about doing this job is that if your bonnet is FRP for god sake wear gloves and some eye wear. My hands, arms and eyes are itching like mad now from the dust. Stupid me!!!

So there was have it. More or less upto date. Car is back in the garage awaiting the next day of work on it. What with moving house, having a baby and doing a lot of polishing work for other I\'ve not really had much time working on it but as I said hopefully everything will get done and the car will be ready to hit the strip again next year :D

Over and out

Adam

Pretty sure I\'ve seen this around Guildford a few times. Looks great, sounds good and is nice to see an RX7 driving round the town as it a change from badly modded hatch backs.

I do believe there are a few around the Guildford area but like Adam they\'re mid rebuild upgrade phase.

They have done a few meets I believe too.
