Title: Went Dynoing today........ :(
Post by: Well-sy on September 12, 2009, 06:45:18 PM
This is my RX8 231 at the dyno:

Result :(

Any ideas people. From looking at the graph my only guess thus far, is that it may need a major service, i.e. plugs/ coils etc.

Any help appreciated :)

Is the graph at the wheels or the flywheel? The 231 is at the fly.

Whats that? A supercharger needed? really? AND its shiny? :D

Yes, some form of FI is definetly needed!

So what is it supposed to be at the wheels?

This is horse power at the wheels and this figure is absolutely fine  :driving

The 230 figure comes from the flywheel horse power where the engine would be Dyno tested before install, once in the car the gear box, diff, propshaft etc all contribute to frictional loss that brings the wheel horse power down to the type of figures you are seeing

Hope this helps

I don\'t know why they unbolted the FI systems off the RX8 anyhow lol its a sports car and it seems to be a step backwards lol They even went backwards reducing the oil injectors causing early engines to fail...silly ford infected cars lol

its is very interesting this would come up now as a friend of mine out his 231 on the dyno recently it has:

39k engine
uprated coils (mrp)
uprated leads (mrp)
new 02 (mrp)
Decat (mrp)
Cat back

it made.......

160 atw and 192 at the fly - bit shocking really.

yes that was me at the rr day. Did have a nose about the rx7, probably one of the first cars I looked at. I think now I just get instantly drawn to rotary lol :rollin

Hi Tharik,

You should realise that If this is the case then this cars engine has somthing either seriously wrong with it or the dyno was reading very very wrong ,

For instance We have know these portable rolling road dynos to be wayyyyy out,

If the horse power figure is correct then this car must really have some bad issues like bad starting misfiring etc etc,

If all is well get him to run it up the rad against another 230

Guys this figure is FLYWHEEL horsepower, not wheels, if it was wheels it means it has 250 at the flywheel which I doubt for a stock machine.

Most Rx8s (231) on dynos produce around 160 to 180 at the WHEELS

Also Clive and everybody with an Rx8 , you will have problems dynoing a RX8 correctly.
Please read this article , it explains the issues well.

your cars are probably running fine :D

I think this particular dyno was fairly advanced, my car was done on a \'rotary\' setting, infact it was a twin rotary setting as it has different modes for how many rotors you have.

So does this mean my car is running very well, considering all the other figures iv seen in this thread.

also looking at the bhp line, could the initial dip in the curve be cured with a very good full service?

It probabley is when the aux ports come online when the power line starts to go up, but yours is a fairly typical hp figure. As the RX8 ECU along with the ABS gets confused as it detects the rear wheels are moving and the fronts are not it may do something to the fuelling, I will have to ask Reworx next time im down there how they dyno rx8s and see if they do something on the car or rollers themselves

ahhh reworx. Was hoping to find someone that knows them :)

im looking into one of their own label turbos for the 8. How do you find them down there? i.e workmanship etc.

They have done all the dyno work, mapping, fuel system, wiring,ECU,etc etc since I have been into rx7s, would not let anyone else touch my car, they are probably the leaders in getting the most power out rx8s in the country (after all they have the fastest 8 in the uk lol)

Post by: Well-sy on September 14, 2009, 04:58:46 PM
are they any further ahead with the production of the turbo?

I agree,

Every single dyno sheet i have ever seen has been a flywheel figure unless it states power @ wheel/hubs.

Also great read on the rx8 dyno article

Hi Guys,

For some reason some RX-8\'s will give crazy readings because the ECU picks up that not all the wheels are turning and others dont and locks the thing down onto the first map and yet others don\'t!,

I can remember Rotorstock 2 when one RX-8 went on the mobile dyno and was fine and then another went on and was somthing like 40bhp down :3Confused

The reason I based this initial figure on RWHP is that my own RX-8 in totaly stock form with just a HKS ECU attached on TDI\'s Rototest VPA-R chassis dynamometer which is way more acurate than rollers and it produced a clearly stated 198.5 RWHP @ 7690 rpm, so to me seeing 204 on rollers sounds about right, (see below)

Dyno machine details and info are on this link,

http://www.tdi-plc.com/index.php?pge=C_dynocam

When I was racing many times I would hear people brag about the horse power of their new engine and yet they went no quicker that the previous season, as I said to Tharik, at the end of the day it\'s how quick the car goes up the road or on the track.

Mark thanks for the link I will have a look later,

To conclude the above I would be interested in what the RR company says about RWHP or FWHP surrounding this car if Sy has a minute to ring them
