me personally not used them. seen some of the porting when engines have been ripped out. not to what i call perfectionist standard..

i wouldnt go to a dentist for a hair cut.

same with having work done on my rex. if ya get my drift.

before i get accused of witch hunting im not... not slagging off their engine build quality. just saying porters are better at porting etc   :-)

I\'d like to put my tuppence worth in (for what its worth-tuppence)? What is a porter?  My experience in porting didn\'t come from someone teaching me, its not a skill that you go to college to learn, its  a skill that can only be gained by practice. When I was at college off hand grinding- to give it an engineering term-was done by unskilled people and in five years of an engineering apprenticeship, six years at college and two years at uni I don\'t think it was mentioned once.Someone who may have a good reputation at porting may not be a good tuner or engine builder, though of course they should be.I have probably more porting experience than most though not on rotarys, having \'ported\' hundreds if not thousands of two stroke barrels, casings, manifolds etc.I also used to make my own barrels, cylinder heads, cranks,,etc. The \'skill\' involved in riving lumps of metal out comes in a steady hand and knowledge learned over years and yes, I\'ve done some .... ups in my time,\'You learn by your mistakes\'. Any engineer worth his salt who is too arrogant to admit making mistakes has never pushed any boundaries, and yes, my mistakes have cost me money( you don\'t do it twice when you\'re paying for it)!!! Anyone who knows anything about American muscle will probably have heard of the Boss 302 Mustang, the ports were that big the engine wouldn\'t produce power under 5000rpm and this was supposed to be a road car! I can\'t comment on anyone elses \'porting\'(lets face it, there is a lot more to tuning an engine than just making the holes bigger)but what I have seen of Carls porting is of a neat, well worked job on the housings and so on I\'ve seen in his place. As for other peoples work,I can\'t comment and certainly wouldn\'t have sly digs at people over the Internet,If I didn\'t like somebodys work then they wouldn\'t get my business. As for different types of porting, the work Ihave done on our Grants FD(the first rotary I have ever worked on) has resulted in the rough idle of a bridge-a monster street port apparently- without the .... poor fuel \'economy\' ahem- of a bridge. Unfortunately I can\'t find the timing diagram that I did at the time so I can\'t say exactly what the size of them is in degrees but Carl did say they were a little bit bigger (well alright then, a lot)than he would have gone. Carl mapped the car and seemed impressed with a first time effort from me. Is it quick? Well I think so but theres always a faster one out there, as long as Grant is happy is all I\'m bothered about.Moral of this saga? Well ,I\'m a \'porter\' but I certainly can\'t map RX7s!!! (Just to give you some idea of how much porting I\'ve done over the 35years- Iended up with carpal tunnel syndrome due to using porting tools)!Bob.

What kind of tools do you use Bob? Ive ported 2 FD engines now using a dremel, they were bother mild street ports though so nothing too taxing.

Coffee? Nah mate just a large bag of white powder! (next paragraph). As for tools. a dremel for porting? Hahahahahahahaahaaahhahahahaha etc. It might be alright formodel aero engines but I think I\'d rather kill myself than do serious work with one of those things. A6mm die grinder and a decent compressor(14cfm minimum). I used to use a dentists drill at one time which is ideal for getting into transfer ports on two strokes. If you look on ebay there are small 3mm die grinders for not a lot of money(Should I start a new paragraph yet)?
(new paragraph) The rotary burrs for these aren\'t bad at a tenner for 10 for doing the detailing.
For polishing \'spirabands\' are available at £35 per hundred.
But(is the joke about paragraphs wearing thin yet)?
Also don\'t start sentences with the word \'but\'. A length of 6mm bar slotted and then a roll of emery tape is almost as good and cheaper.
One last thing, I\'ve done a number of V8 heads over the last couple of years and there is three days work in them using a 6mm die grinder, I\'d still be at them with a dremel!!!!!!
Oh, and if you are buying burrs for the die grinder they are £30-£40 each for proper ones.
 Luv and kisses. Bob.!!!!!!!!1

And for those smarty pants moaning about \'Paragraphs\'- Don\'t blame me for the stupid computer on the forum starting every paragraph at the edge of the page!!!!!!!

It took me about 4-5 hours for each port, i thought the dremel was alright :)

Sunny Huddersfield!! I don\'t mean to be derogatory about the dremel, its just not heavy duty enough for serious work. Most people who do porting regularly will use a 6mm/ 1/4" die grinder. For example, a pair of iron V8 heads have 16 ports and even with the die grinder and decent burrs you are looking at an hour and a half each port to rough out, then half an hour plus for polishing. thats 32 hours of fizzing hands!!! Apparently when I had my brain haemmorage relieved(result of an attempted murder-and the ....er nearly succeeded) the surgeon said the tool they use to cut pieces ou of my skull was like a dremel(stainlesss of course). The result of the head injury was for me to have to stop doing everything for a few years while I learned to walk again.I\'ve only picked the porting up in the last 2years and don\'t do it seriously anymore though the next job is a pair of 400ci heads off my lads Trans Am, and no ,I\'m not looking forward to doing \'em!!!!
