Title: Perfect Pilot Bearing Puller
Post by: nuki on September 06, 2009, 01:46:48 PM
Hello! i thought i would share this as i came across the pilot bearing while changing the gearbox, i had a rummage and put these together to remove the bearing from DIY house hold bits from my general screw box :) take a quick look this tool did the job perfect and i had the bearing and oil seal removed within 2 minutes.

here is what you require..
-M8 Through Bolt
-Large Socket
-A Washer
-Extra Nut for the thread.

while under the car insert the through bolt into the bearing and oil seal like so and tighten the nut to grip the bearing hard.

put the socket over the thread so the socket sits on the flywheel and Add the Washer and Nut to the back of the socket on the thread.

Finally Tighten the Nut against the washer and the thread will pull the bearing out with ease.
:)

Hi there,

very intrigued by your method of pulling the pilot bearing out using a bolt and socket etc.

Unfortunately the pics are no longer up and I was wondering f you could email them to me at

douglas.rawson@gmail.com (douglas.rawson@gmail.com)

I am kinda desperate as want to get this done before the weekend is over  and have had no luck getting hold of a puller of any kind.

Thanks in advance and I look forward to hearing from you.

Cheers

Doug

I\'ve never used this method before, but going on Nuki\'s description alone I would:

Get a through bolt like one of these  https://www.macbuildingproducts.com/product_info.php?cPath=26_86&products_id=1881

Put the non-threaded end inside the bearing and tighten up the nut as tight as possible. I\'m assuming the non-threaded end expands as you tighten it up which will grip the inside of the bearing.

Get a large socket and place it over the protruding thread from the through bolt, with the \'socket\' side touching the flywheel.
Large socket because it will spread the force over a larger area than a small socket to prevent damaging your flywheel.
The \'drive\' side of the socket facing you, unless you can get hold of some massive washers. :chat

Thread a large washer and then a nut onto the protruding thread. Tighten nut and washer so they meet up with the back of the socket.
Now when you tighten up the nut, the socket will not move as its sandwiched between the nut you are tightening and the flywheel. The only thing that can move is the thread of the through bolt towards you, which in turn will pull the bearing out as the bearing is \'locked\' to the non-threaded end of the through bolt.

Hopefully this is right. :)

-M8 Through Bolt
-Large Socket
-A decent washer that fits. (i used the one found on the through bolt if i remember correctly)
-Extra Nut for the Thread.

While under the car insert the through bolt into the bearing and oil seal like so and tighten the nut to grip the bearing hardish.
Put the socked over the thread so the socket sits on the flywheel and add the washer and nut to the back of the socket on the thread.
finally use the nut against the washer and as you tighten, the thread will pull the bearing out perfect.

We\'ve always just packed it with grease on the renny motors, inserted a bit of appropriate sized drill rod and smacked it with a mallet. Hydraulic pressure from the grease normally pops it right out after a couple of of smacks.

Its a Rowl bolt (not sure thats the correct spelling). They are used to fix things into concreate. You drill a hole wack it in and tighten it up so that it spreads and grips the hole in the concreate. Then you can bolt whatever done to the floor. You can get them in any builders merchants or tool shop. I never would have thought of it for this perpose but it is a great idea.
