Post by: ENVYD on September 03, 2009, 10:09:16 PM
is there such a thing as i one way resistor or something of the like? as i need something like this for the wiring of my new headlights to keep main beam on when i put high beam?

thanks

surely its just how the lights are wired or how the relays work ?

you need to work out what gets 12v when you put on side/low/main ( and what doesnt get 12v when you put on main beam ) and just work out what to wire to where ;)

A diode will do this - but the light will run slightly dimmer as they drop a bit of voltage.  You want to make sure you get something fairly beefy, as headlights run into several amps (60W is 5A at 12V and you\'ve 2 bulbs)

You may be better off with wiring up relays to do this.

yeah i know but when you put full beam on the main beam turns off! an you can not really bridge unless there is a one way item in the bridge as then will both be on at the same time! the main and full are to diffo bulbs/ units

okay thanks mate, you have any idea what?

Is this something like HID and Hi Beam ?

If so, you can take the feed for the HID\'s from the common terminal on the relay and then leave the Hi Beam coming off the normal relay contact.

This would mean the HID\'s would be on all the time the headlights are selected, but Hi Beam would still only come on with HI beam selected.

My mate (electronics engineer) made me a wee box of tricks - essentially a few relays which take the signal which makes the dipped go off when you put main on and reverses it so power goes to all four.

what it looks like:

the wires coming in going out are:

(left hand side, top-bottom) main 12V in, O/S dipped +, O/S main +, O/S both -.
(right hand side, top-bottom) main 12V in, N/S dipped +, N/S main +, N/S both -.

there is a thread on here somewhere not that long ago that tells of an easier wiring solution to doing it that involves taking a permanent live from the battery, i\'m sure the thread title had "quad lights" in it if that helps!!

On the FC there are main light relays - one for headlighs, and another that switches between Hi and Lo beam bulbs / filaments.

If you have the same arragement on the FD, you can wire it like this:
