Hi everyone, I had a chat to Prof and indeed with James at JM garage, basically in an FC its quite hard to fit a V mount due to the position of certain cross members. There is also an issue fitting a front mount as there is limited space and there is a HUGE oil cooler in the way and I would need clear airflow for oil, water and air cooling lol
I had a chat with Prof and he told me that someone was running an intercooler flat on the floor of the enginebay and it worked well and had no issues with stones or anything, just wondering what peoples thoughts are about it and indeed if anyone else has done it :)
I remember seeing it but can\'t help you out with who it was or any of the info about it.
First dibs on your top mount ;)

HAHA ok I will put your name on the list of people who want my top mount lol
wasnt it T2REW ???
there was that red fc at brooklands that came late. didnt that have a pretty much flat rad?
i cant remember exactly and didnt take pics.
i think prof took some pics so he could study it and get some ideas.
I think it was Stu yeah. The car is now owned by Driftmotion on here and is located around Manchester. Knew I\'d seen it somewhere, oh thats right its when he took me out in it!
thought it was Tony (Antnikuk) who was running his ic flat on the floor?
Im sure there is more than 1 car with a flat mounted intercooler hehe, im just wondering what kind of flow it has, and indeed that kind of bonnet I would need?

lucky bugger, when i was there the battery was flat !! :(
the ic was under the car - so an EGI bonnet would do just fine ;)
it was mine, i used the stock rad in the stock place and put the biggest i/c i could get flat in the bottom where the undertray would be. much easier for pipe work and worked a treat. I went in a couple of gravel traps and had no issues at all with it.
T2 rew did do the same after he had trouble with his front mount and cooling.
OK cool :) will need to get an e-fan and turn the turbo compressor outlet downwards and its all good :) almosy as awesome as a top mount without the drawback of having it sit on a HUGE heat source hehe
can you just turn the outlet upside down ??

I should think so - the compressor housing is on a 6 bolt pattern on the Centre Housing Rotating Assembly (CHRA), and you are not touching the compressor blades or shaft by removing this and rotating it around 180 degrees. The main issue has got to be clearance - will the compressor outlet foul anything on the engine when mounted upside down, as it will be much closer to the engine / exhaust manifold / steering rack / OMP.
ahhhhhhhhh interesting theory though ;)
Does anyone have any photos of the flat mouted ICs?
here you go

OOOO its all so colour coded lol what are the specs on the IC?
Hmmm this has got me tempted now.

My topmount doesn\'t need the radiator replaced and a bigger turbo to push enough air lol
Don\'t worry top mount is still my aim for now.

fits for me,,with standard turbo bonnet ( NA bonnet is also OK )
although mine has the radiator pushed back
( yes a standard s4 radiator used to sit there on the frame before this ASI ,, the standard radiator can go back so that the bottom outlet nestles in the bump of the sway bar )

the radiator retains the original angles
and the V I/C across the front creates the top of a dam for the air in front of the radiator
( and the oil cooler represents the bottom of the dam jutting out horizontal in front of the rad )
this is all sealed up with door seal foam
any air pressurized in front of this dam must pass down and through the oil cooler ,, or up and out the top of the VMIC
( or force through the radiator )
this creates all serial cooling airflows,,, no cooling air makes a double cooling pass
-- the top surface of the VMIC is the OUTLET for this dam air
as such retains stock turbo bonnet
the bottom stock under panel and over panels are deleted
( removing the under tray allows for larger frontal surface area for cooling air intake

inlet temps are significantly lower than in the previous FMIC setup ( same IC ) which was about 60 mm in front of radiator
( note the holes in the frame to previously hold the IC as front mount )
as before the gas carb would literally burn your hand after prolonged drive,, now is barely warmer than the hand

How structurally important is that large tube / cross-member? Mines proper grotty and is going to need chopping out, new plates welding in and the cross-tube replacing. It would be so much easier if I could ditch it all together...
TBH I haven\'t had a proper look as to where it ties into and what function it serves but if its just a big lump of chassis stiffening then I might do without and seam weld the whole chassis instead!
It is structural - depends how much you want the front twisting ;)
as above =)
on mine its been cut out and moved back a little in order to fit a v mount.
im not sure if theres any pics on my thread. if nt then im sure m1tch can take some pics of it when he next goes down =)
88GT-R had his removed in his time attack fc. Seemed to free up so much space and make more options available. I was tempted to cut mine out at one point.
