Title: Adjusting boost
Post by: muzzyd on April 27, 2004, 06:19:45 PM
Can you adjust the boost by shortening actuator rods or does this have to be set electronically.  I have a twin turbo and it is running 1.2bar, I want to lower it.  Also have an uprated ECU that I dont think can be mapped.

Any info appreciated.

Worse comes to the worst you could look at a bosot controller.  My Blitz one, on a 50% setting, limits my boost to ~1.06 bar (jsut under 14 psi).

I had considered one, but its the connecting up and wiring etc that gets me, unless there idiot proof instructions?

Mate, seriously, take it real easy til u get some boost control on the car!

1.2 bar = REAL bad thing on pump gas...

What ECU do you have?

BTW - Gary - 1.06 bar is more like 15.3 psi, not under 14 :)

I think its called a pan racing ecu, not sure about this though. its run well enough though as it has other mods too (FMIC, filter).  Just wanting to lower it to under 1bar.  Forgot to mention, I am runing it on 102 octane fuel when I get hold of it, if not its optimax with octance boosters.

That will be a PanSpeed tuned ecu. They seem to have a good rep, but 1.2 bar on any setup on pump fuel and a stock un dowelled motor is asking for trouble I think common consensus will suggest...

1.2 bar ! hmm thats a lot on stock twins with stock fueling

Sometimes just becuase its been tuned by a respected place in Japan it does not always mean it was tuned to last very long. Not all owners have their cars set up to last ages. Just a thought

And as Dave says, 1.2bar is a lot to put the stock snails thru on a daily basis without expecting them to shit themselves!

There have been a couple of engines running Knightsports 4beat ecus that have popped recently thinking about it. That boost is really well past a stock fuel system.

Rich

I was talking about this with someone the other day, a lot of people justify high stress settings on the engine etc by saying thats how it came from Japan and they know what they are doing over there.

There some mad kit come over from there and I don\'t believe for one second that every car in Japan is setup conservatively to last as long as possible. Thinking about it most people in Japan only keep their car for a couple of years anyway

Hi Dave,
What you heard is generally correct. The Jap tuners have there name to protect so they only really go mental on their car\'s not on customers. This car is only running 1.2 bar not because that what it was setup for but because the boost controller that was fitted has been removed so there is no boost control at present.

That makes sense Brian :)

So there\'s your only answer, put a boost controller back in before she pops.

Any idea what boost it was set up to run before the boost controller came off?

Indeed matey, cars make power by living closer to the edge (nice generalisation perhaps), its not hard to make a car make more power when tuning as I\'ve seen with Geff on the rollers. The thing is leaving a reasonable safety margin too. Its all very well people saying this is the best A/F ratio to tune to, or this much timing is optimum etc. If u tune the car to make the most power possible then you have a very minimal safety margin. I wouldnt trust the quality of pump gas in the UK to keep my engine alive tuned hard like that. Geff tunes very safely on the rollers unless specifically asked otherwise. Looking at John Yorke and Steve Cleary\'s car you can see that you can still get good power very safely. Sure, he could make them put out more but at what cost? Look at the mileage John does on his...

Thats cleared all that up then :)

Don\'t hammer it till you\'ve got a boost controler etc :)

It was a max reading - will set my commander to log boost next time I take the car out as I know the car is set for just under 14 psi.

Brian, the part for the boost that I thought was a controller ended up being a digital signal box for the boost gauge, I am not sure what the adjust switch is for, I got hold of the wiring diagrams but no instruction manual.

Just need to drop boost to keep safe, still not sure if it is stock or uprated turbos, it was described as uprated on the auction sheet.  Guessing only answer is a boost controller?

Just had a hard blat, redlining in 2nd and third, while having my PFC commander displaying boost and max figure.  Got 0.97 Kg/cm2 with my boost gauge seeming solid.

Just about spot on then, a tad over 14psi.
