Title: twin turbo v8 build
Post by: tinker-27 on August 24, 2009, 10:25:34 PM
As the title reads i have started to strip my car down to twin turbo it, got two GT35 garrett turbos, stripping the motor to fit low comp pistons, smaller cam, different crank, twin plate clutch.got to build all the pipe work, intercooler, rad, etc etc, one of my customers (who also is having a twin turbo v8) happens to make ecus so we should be able to control to boost. its going to be a learning curve as been into na motors up till now,  i will post some pics as i go along :3gears-rh

Going to be an amazing build.

How much room will you have for the radiator and intercooler ??

Shaun

Post by: tinker-27 on September 02, 2009, 03:14:26 PM
yes i am going up and forward with the exhaust then down and out the drivers side as normal, there should be room for the rad and inter cooler (needs to be big !!), there is a monaro twin turbo with the same cc and turbos and it does 880 at the wheels !! (1017 at the crank). im going to run 3 different boost levels to make it sensible, i will hopfully do some base runs on a engine dyno to set it up and get some figures but it will be on a fresh motor so no big boost for a bit, does any one here have any experience of ceramic coating and does ot make much difference ?

Its not the cheapest option. I had my manifold, downpipe, turbo exhaust back and LIM done at a place in warrington called http://www.camcoat.u-net.com/ . Does make a big difference in heat management and keeps everything looking good !

Takes about 5wks to turn around too.

We are authorised dealers for Zircotec.  They are probably the best ceramic coaters in the market place.  They do all of our turbo housings, exhaust manifolds, inlet manifolds, and downpipes.

They also ceramic coat composite materials for F1 teams as heat shrouds for the exhausts systems, as well as for Lamborghini :)

If you want to have a quote?

Drop me an email with what you want coating, approximate lengths and diameters of any tubes.

As standard they come in performance white, but other colours are available.

For the inlet manifolds as well as adding a thermal barrier, we also add a reflective barrier to lessen heat soak

and a bigger engine bay,  that one is pretty full and he has no intercooler , pipe work or filters.............  which ever way you look at it, the pipe work is going to be a maze...

How did you get on at fighting torque?
Title: twin turbo v8 build
Post by: tinker-27 on September 14, 2009, 06:29:45 PM
crap at fighting torque 175 mph with a slipping clutch and warped the pressure plate, i knew it was over its design limit but thought it might hold till the twin plate came but not so !! mar7in  did 169mph in his 5,7 fd. you are right its going to be a maze !!!!!

just out of interest,  whats the reason for choosing turbo over supercharger?
Title: twin turbo v8 build
Post by: tinker-27 on September 14, 2009, 08:17:16 PM
i have looked long and hard at the two options and the turbo makes way more power for the size, it would need to be a massive supercharger to give the power, the centrifugal blower is better power i think than screw type,i have seen both and the centrifugal makes good power and would do the job but belt slip and noise are another issue.turbos are harder to get right but should be a better job if i can control them (boost) correctly, i plan to use a emerald ecu that can have three maps with dirrerent boost and different boost in different gears, and possibly traction control (not that i think i will need it !!!!).

hi buddy

just wondering if you could give me some advice on the 1jz conversion on the FD3s, which im about to indulge into now, have you done one of these before?

And i also wana start an Ls1 conversion on my mkiv supra, advice please on what ill need. Can i just get the engine mounts customised or would i need to customise the subframe etc?

ray_4u007@hotmail.co.uk

Please send me an email and we\'ll discuss in more detail

ive not done a 1/2jz yet, the ls always wins out in power and weight, but it would be fast, the ls1 powered supra had to have modified sumo, subframe, engine mounts and gearbox mounts !! but worked well when it was all done. i can do the fabing for you if you need it doing cheers craig

hi Craig, thanks for the response. Ive just seen some pics you put up on mkivsupra.net, i will soon contact you via pm.

Firstly I want to get the Rx7/1jz conversion out of the way, could you fabricate the subframe, mounts, crosmember etc for that conversion?

When the above is done then i will more than likely consider the Ls1 conversion, would you be able to give me a rough total cost for the conversion and parts needed please?

the anti roll bar is in std position not been lowered, ive had the first drive in it and all good so far after soooo much work, the wastgates had 13 psi springs in which i have swapped for 4 psi ones,i had it on emeralds dyno but it pegged the dyno at half throttle at 2800rpm !!!!!!!! . it drive normally up till 1/4 throttle very smooth and torquey then as it boosts it just smokes tyres even in third at half throttle and this at 4 psi :D   i cant imagine what it going to be like at 15 psi . even with two gt35s 1.06 exh housings it makes real boost from 1750 rpm way earlier than i thought it would .Got to run it in more and get it to a bigger dyno and see what it will do (or hoe drave i am with the boost)

a rolling start ??? thats what pu**ys do at MLR do 30-130 events hahaha

Motec you can add options like traction control so you have no excuses hahahaha

And get bigger rubber

Anyway a good driver can modulate wheel spin and traction with their right foot :3gears-lh

I had a little trip in this the other day & it\'s breathtaking, it\'s almost violent I\'d say. I\'ve either been in or driven almost every V8 conversion Tinker has done (not just Rx\'s) but nothing prepared me for the way the way the turbo kicks in, it doesn\'t just spin the rear 285 tyres it try\'s to rip them from the rims, even in 3rd it pins you in your seat & turns your tummy like a fair ground ride..... God only knows what it will be like when more than half throtle & 3000 rpm is availble & more boost preasure :3Confused

Wiring is easy, I\'m an electrician so doing stuff on a car would be less hastle than the work I do on site. All within arms reach and not the other end of a building when your trying to find a fault.

Surely once you have done it once, you have done it a thousand times? Lol

i prefer fighting torque type events standing start 1 mile runs , starting on concrete normally so not so much grip to break stuff , 200 mph is possible with big power (stevie turbo has done it in his supercharged granada ls3) ,and it does not mean the 60ft time mean so much as in 1/4 miles where a well prepared chassis make up good time and mine is a road car on road tyres, i am going to run it at the strip when its mapped properly but dont know what to expect :3Confused .

Great build and interested to see the future of the 4 rotor build!

So what are we talking costs for each build, not looking for a figure really, but will they come out similar to each other?

With that power Craig, your terminal in the quarter will be easy 145-150, so hitting 200mph in your setup in the standing mile will be a piece of pi ss , cant wait to see it run should be epic.

i managed 180.1mph in a standing 7/8 mile with my old na engine , my mates cerbera with a 530 rwhp NA ls3 has just done 202 mph at bruntingthorpe , i think 200 should be easy and should have lots of power for good times just getting all down is the answer,it should be able to have varied boost depending on gear throttle angle etc ,with 13 psi springs in the waste gates it makes 13 psi @2750 revs at half throttle (the dyno could not read it but he said it was over 800ft lb at half throttle) ive booked in to TVR power in a couple of weeks to try and map the second half of the map . im  running it with 4 psi springs at the moment and sort the boost control out for the higher gears .even at 4psi second gear is a joke (3.08 diff ratio) . im running 285 rears but can get 305s on which i am trying to get hold of ,

i had a drive in it last night ,at 4psi and only mapped up to half throttle, it drive very smooth and normal at low throttle openings (90 mph is 1700 revs)  but if you squeeze the throttle in second asa soon as it gets to 2000 revs it just smokes the tyre and the same in third :burnout, im on 285 federal rsrs which are good . it is going to need boost limiting in the lower 5 gears i think !!!!!  . im new to FI so i have no idea how much 10 more will make ?. to be honest this is enough now , you can call me soft but i 4 psin with full throttle shoud be fun .

What petrol are you using? Blower I take it?

If you haven\'t seen any of nelson racing engines YouTube videos then I would go have a look at them if was you, they\'re just going through their LS series of engines. Think he has had 1800hp so far with race fuel at 30psi. His engine building and mapping skills are very good. All twin injectors per cylinder, one for 93octane, the other for race fuel.

Switches between the 2 depending on boost setting.

Go check em out, if you haven\'t already.

I think i\'d .... my pants with that much power, look mental. Congrats on such an impressive build, I\'d love to see a super car owners face when you leave them for dead.

Can i just ask if you are only running 4psi, if you had to do it again would you use a single turbo? I only ask as the car is obviously spooling up at low rpm so for a street car would a larger single be more drivable? (or am i talking boll ocks?)

If you can get the power to the street then this thing will fly!

On the subject of Nelson Racing engines, I\'ve seen a lot of their vids on youtube and whilst they look impressive and can certainly smoke rubber.  I think I\'ve only seen one run on a 1/4 mile, that was a 1500bhp Chevy Twin Turbo that ran 10.02 on low boost but when they added race fuel and turned the boost up a bit they only put 2 gallons in and it surged the fuel in the tank away from the pickup and the motor died halfway down the track.

The choice between single and twin turbo was easy in the end , turbo technicks spect the turbos for the 7,0l motor they Are GT35Rs with the bigger 1.06 housing they thought they might be a bit laggy but would flow well at higher revs and a single would be massive , it was easier to fit  two than one and as I happens they spool so early. ( and twin turn sounds cooler than turbo !!) . I\'ve seen motors in aus and the states make 1500 BHP +  with lesser engines than mine but running 20 psi , I\'m not sure what pressure I am going to run as the final number would only be for pub talk really. As long as it does 1000+ I\'m happy

Update time , had it on TVR powers dynojet dyno today ,we were there to sort the mapping out and do some runs, I have fitted 4psi waste gate springs in the tials sorted the bottom end ok so started doing runs . It was doing 600+ at 4psi and as we upped the boost it is doing 750+ at 8psi and at 13 psi it\'s doing 804 bhp and 823 ftlb @ WHEELS but it is missing badly as it makes over 11 psi , it is blowing the spark out and need the gaps closing as they are STD grade plugs and STD gaps so I will go back when I get the plugs sorted, but looking good as the graph is climbing nicely until it misfires . And nothing broke

Hi guys a little update, fitted some feed over arches and 315,30,18 Yokohama tyres on 12" rear rotas . Had it polished while they were doing the paint ( thanks twin and Keith ), smoothed and powder coated the rocker covers to tidy the bay a little , booked in or another dyno session at the end of April ( if the new drive shafts get here in time from the states) .

relly nice build, even though im a rotary purist :)

How the hell can that engine bay survive the heat from the exhaust pipes? Why not cera-coat the exhaust and turbohousings, and goldsheet-cover stuff? :)

It seems ok with the heat so far , the turbos get some air flow over them at the front , as they are not tucked down the side . I did look at zircoat but it was so much money I thought I would see how it goes, even the paint on the underside of the bonnet is still ok !!

Tinker, I\'m seriously in love, that FD you have built is just amazing! I remember talking to you on driftworks. I have a Tech2motorsports JZ swap kit to fit my 2JZ in to my FD. It is a low cost build in comparison to that crazy motor you have built! I am just waiting for Tuning Developments Warrington to finish off refreshing my ex-Aristo JZ lump... I can\'t wait now after reading this! Still not 100% on which single turbo set up I\'m going for. If a GT3582R with standard cams will make the car go as I want it to I\'ll be happy! Have you done any previous FD\'s with this set up? I hope I get to see some more pictures of yours or in the flesh one day soon...

Hi , I\'m not a expert on turbo sizing I have done some work on 2jz motors with singles on then one which uses the std two exhaust manifolds and a y pipe to the turbo which works very well , the GT35 I run are a good fit on them mine have 1.06 exhaust housing but it all depends on what spec your motor is . A few guys are running truck turbos with very good results and they are cheap , my drive shafts should be here from the states soon so it will be back on the road I hope . How far along the build are you ?
Title: twin turbo v8 build
Post by: rwdwiganer on May 18, 2012, 03:39:42 PM
Not very far to be honest! The main reason things have taken me so long is the near 8 month wait I had to take delivery of my 2JZGTE from Japan. After months of waiting and waiting I managed to find a full Aristo for sale for only £1250, so I cancelled my order and got a full refund.
I\'ve stripped the Aristo, bought an R154 box, and I\'m now waiting for Tuning Developments Warrington to finish off my partial rebuild. I want the engine running perfect to push the 550hp near 550ftlb I\'m looking for. They are rebuilding the cylinder head including valve stem oil seals, ARP bolts and new head gasket. New oil pump, sump swap (from front to mid) new shells and crank polish.
Fortunately while waiting for my \'imported engine\' I managed to find someone in the UK selling a full Tech 2 Motorsports JZ swap kit he imported from the USA. I bought the full kit including the carbon bonnet needed to clear the 2J without the need to touch the rack. The kit comes with everything, prop, mounts, subframe etc.
I have 90% decided on my turbo manifold even though i keep looking at the old GT40 set up Driftworks had on their S15, but don\'t want to push my R154 or anything else for that matter too far!

The turbo I am very close to buying is the billet Borg Warner Batmowheel S362 from Whifbitz. Main reasons I want better top end that a GT3582R can\'t flow and the graphs I have seen for GT35R with 1.06a/r just don\'t look responsive enough for what I would gains top end for a \'small\' T61 sized turbo on a 2J. Would probably make more sense going GT40 in this case but like I said at a price (extra parts needed and things going bang!)
I\'ll post the graph up at some point tinker just to show you why I think it could be the perfect street set up for mine. It\'s really impressive on standard cams and the graph shown is the earlier non-billet S362!

Took the steel prop off today , just in time I think

New carbon one fitted , it had flexed around the weld !! Not quite cracked but not far off had I tried more boost or stickier tyres it would have been in bits !! .

I need some better rear tyres I think the yokos are good but no better grip than the 285 rsrs , don\'t want to run 888s at £300 + each when they only last 1000 miles tops . Going to Greg @ Protuner soon to check the base 4 psi map and try 1bar if all goes well

Hi I had it on Greg\'s Dyno last year , ran it at 1 bar it made 1017 bhp and 980 ft lb , it drives very well real smooth and pull so hard !!! . Because I run boost against throttle angle it\'s not stupid to drive the more throttle the more boost/ power , but the clutch has been a pain and not being consistant and not bring able to get gears , I have been on to RAM clutches who made the clutch ( to be fair it\'s only rated to 850ftlb) it\'s wrapped the centre floating plate due to spinning at high rpm-boost . I have had new ceramic plates made for the clutch which they say will hold 1200 bhp , not had chance to fit it yet as been silly busy at work but hopefully next week !!

The ceramic should be good, more likely to eat through the flywheel before they wear. As it stopped breaking things then?
