i have a problem with my power steering pump about 3 mouths ago the bearing went in it so i had it rebuilt, two weeks later it went again so i had it rebuilt again!!! this time it lasted about a mouth and it went again for just a day??? and now about 3 weeks later its gone again!!!!
please does anybody know where i can get a half decent rebuild done or am i better of buyin a new one?
Have you asked Jimmys if they do reconditioned exchange units?
i know it sounds daft , but is something else causing the pump to break down , too tight belt , bad steering rack etc...
just a thought
Remove the bugger...along with the air pump:D

i did wonder if would be sumthing else but i have been planing taking the air pump off along with other things but parking would be a nightmare i drove it around with no belt on for a morning and that was bad enough...
That would be because the rack is still full of oil, and under pressure. Once the rack is drained, it is still a bit tough at low speeds, but has much better feedback with speed.
John
how do you drain the rack ??
more on that subject - how can you fill it up ?
Thanks for that you\'ve got me thinking now do i really need power steering along with the air pump and air con...
nahhh i dont think so
When blanking thing off would just a peace aluminium bolted on do and good question how do you drain the rack i guess its gotta come out and cant just leave it on the car to drain it?
Turn your car upside down:rollin
Paul;)
the simple answer is usually the hardest :)
with taking the air pump off you should put the dual pulleys on - so thats something to think about
although with my steering probs - i wonder if taking the PS off mine would help ( although its a big job if it doesnt !! )
Grinder, you first. Because we have the same car, i can tell you how to do it. Basicly, the rack is left in the car, the pump and bracket is removed along with the pipe work, You then need to rock the steering until all the fluid is out. Some will remain though, and this will provide the lubrication for the rack. You then need to get replacement bolts for where the pies origanaly joined the rack.
Rich, the procedure with yours will be pretty much the same, assuming you have an FD. The difference being in the pully system. All you really need is the alternator, water pump and crank pullies, you just need to find out what belt system you can use.

thanks john !! - sounds simple enough
so on the same point - if the fluid is low in the rack ( haynes says check this if the vehicle is bad on steering ) - how do you add fluid
the PS fluid works only in the pump ( so i assume ) so how do you add oil into the rack - or am i wrong and its the same oil ?
why oh why oh why cant it be something simple like bad tracking :( :(
It appears i put pies, rather than pipes. I wonder if thats a nice chicken pie... no that wouldn´t fit.
The fluid in the power steering resevoir gets pumped around the rack, so that is where it gets filled up.
I take that you have done all the usual checks for your shaking? At that speed, i can only assume that it has something to do with the wheels/suspension/balancing etc.
I hope it gets sorted.
John
i have had the wheels balanced and the tracking done and swapped the back wheels for the front ( before anything was done )
it shakes at high speed - and pulls to the left
so it proves that the fluid is in the rack - so thats something less to worry about
im still not convinced it been tracked correctly - they did it and said it was fine and didnt need adjusting - so not sure if they actually know what they are doing ????
i took the settings but they bloke didnt want them
its really annoying as the car is a pain to drive - put it this way its done 500miles in 7mths - its no fun taking it out :(
its gonna be an interesting drive to rotorstock i can tell you that !
( it pulls to the left - so i checked the passenger side front wheel - thats ok , disc isnt binding , so not sure now - will have to check the drivers side next - then after that - im lost )
When i first took mine for the tracking, the adjusted it using the 323 gtx settings. Nearly blew my top, but i suppose they were German:D If you have the correct figures, i would suggest they stuff their pride and have it set as you ask them.
Does the whole car shake, or is it through the steering. What i am probing for, is could it be coming from the back?
Have you checked the wheel bearings? Suspension bushes and anti-roll bar mounts and bushes?
Oh well, i´ll give you a shout if i think of anything else.
John
right then ...
the car seems to be shaking from the front ( very violently ) at high speeds
it also pulls to the left - which makes right hand bends very interesting
it has new bushes done before i bought it
the only thing that i spotted was on the service sheet , some one suggest it needed a new hub ( dont know what it is or where it is - or how much they are )
so i could do with a way of checking that
the only other suggestion i have had is to check the wheel bearings - as they can make a car funny at high speeds
when the tracking was done , the bloke said that nothing was wrong underneath the front end - he grabbed hold of stuff and pulled on it and such like
the only thing he didnt check was wheel bearing or warped discs !
as i said before - i checked the passenger side - i will check the drivers side next
failing this im debating just taking it to WGT and getting an expert opinion
stu
Best thing i reckon. Hub=bearings. that is where your problem lies. If not, i will give you a beer at Rotorstock.:D Just get it ready for then.
John
thanks john , i will have to jack it up and have a nosey
will it be as simple as getting holfd of the wheel and seeing if there is any play in it - or something more complex
Stu
( complete no-hoper at car mechanics )
If there is any play at the wheel/hub, that is the culprit. But honestly, if you can take her to Pip, or any other Reputable Rotary garage, then that will be the best course of action to take.
John
88 GT-R
that was my idea - take it to pip and see what happens - the only thing is that i am skint - its surprise how much difference having a child makes ( and the fact that there is only one wage now in the household ) - so that along with what pip charges - could be a big no no
i will jack it up and have a look !
how can you check play in the hub - just leave the wheel on and try and twist it
another daft question - could a back wheel hub be causing this - or just the front ?
Hi,
Ref baby, i have one on the way, in days few so i need to get as much done before it is old enough to pinch the 7 fund:D
The Rear could be doing it. If you jack the car up, it needs to be as stable as hell, so the best is to put her onto a car lift if possible. Take a grip of the wheel at opposite ends, and push in and out alternatively, ie left right etc. Then change position on the tyre. Do this to each corner, and hope to God you find your crap bearing.
You say that the bushes were replaced before you got the car. Have they been looked at to ensure that they are seated correctly? Have the rears been checked?
Good luck, as always,
John

is the baby your first ??
well i managed to actually buy the rx7 on the sat as my daughter was born on the monday - now that was good timing :) :)
some bushes were done on rear - not sure which ones though - its in another thread somewhere on here !!
i know the front passenger has NO play in it at all - which annoyed me slightly as i thought that corner was the problem :(
if i do find a bad bearing - is it a big job to replace or am i looking at serious £££££ ? - saying that i can reember someone on here getting new bearings from a proper machine place - they just matched the bearings and the race to something else ( IIRC )
i think i have a few probs really - i think the bearing would make it vibrate at speeds - but i cant see it effecting the steering - unless it could ?
its a shame that rotorstock is only 4 weeks away - i need to get this checked asap - i dont was to go there and a wheel snap off :(
thanks for all your advice john , i hope "RX rich" will forgive us for thread stealing :) :)
Found what i was looking for .......
"Just had new rear suspension bushes and new rear bearings
by Hurleys in Coventry"
thats some of the info i got from the previous owner - and i dont really doubt what he says - i did speak to hurleys for a copy of the invoice for the work done - but he wouldnt play ball - infact he accused me of being a tax man in the conversation ??
i cant see how people run a business and cant lay there hands on an invoice or info on work carried out in the past ??
thanks again matey
Stu
Werll that says it all. Take everything from Hurley with a pinch of salt. Get the work they did checked out.
It´s not a hard job, but i am sure many a company can make it so:reallymad
Sorry about the thread hijack:bandit
John

hummmm these rx7 are just a right pain in the rear :(
the simplest of jobs seems like an impossible task , and you can trust no one to work on them
will have to find some time and have a real good luck at every thing - should be interesting
nahhhh no problems :D
just a little shocked when i got into work and had like 20 new message!!!
its ok ive leant what to do if mine go now
thank RX Rich - sorry to hijack - but its some info for all at the end of the day
just found the original thread now
http://www.mazdarotaryclub.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=5058&perpage=15&highlight=pull&pagenumber=1
seems like i have a LOAD of things to check
first thing to check could be how much petrol you need to torch my car :)
Hey Grinder (yes I\'m still alive!),
Not been on for a while, but after reader this rather legnthy thread ........ it should definatly be one of your front bearings. Shouldn\'t be too tricky to sort. Once you have the right part, pick your weather, and it shouldn\'t take you or I more than a day.
I\'ve finally sorted out mine though. While Pip was on holiday, mine went in to "get it sorted" .......... the only thing that got sorted was my bank acount!!!!!
First on the list was cure an untracable water leak in order to get on the rolling road to tune it, this cost me £360 I was given a water pump gasget and was told that I had to put this on before they could tune it!!!!!! Now this aint Pips fault cause he was on holiday and had no idea this happened....... but bloody hell!!!!!
Anyway, I stripped the engine back down again while it was still in the car, and rebuilt it the same day, hey presto it goes like a dream! Oh! and it now has a rather loud dump valve:D .
So anyway, how are you? lol
hiya matey !
so its running fine then - that always good news !! :)
i took mine out on sat for a while - and its fine at low speeds - just at high speeds it gets iffy - i need to jack it up and have a look - but after spending the weekend looking for a new car ( i blew the mondeo up ) - i have not had chance !
so whats all this about a dump valve ??? did you get it from pips ?? what was the damage ££££?
are you going to the meet on monday ?
Stu
Ahhhh! Poor Mondeo(RIP).
Got the dump valve from DP Motorsports ( //www.dpmotorsports.co.uk ) £75. I\'ll be getting the Apexi slim line turbo timer next.
I should be at the meet but I went to Peterborough on Sunday, and my clutch was mis behaving! Normal gear changes were okay but if I was sitting at a junction with the clutch pressed for a little while, it would slowly engage itself in gear and start moving the car!!! (almost like a cable slipping) but the pedal would come back up after 10secs or so.
Need to look at it but it\'s peeing down!!
the mondy has now been replaced with a rover 420si - so thats not tooo bad ! :)
the BOV isnt too bad at £75 - is it all fitted and working ? - i will have to have a listen to it !! :)
i know on my egi the clutch was iffy - the pedal used to stick to when you changed gear and the such like you had to put your foot under the pedal and move it back up - nice and simple and more importantly - CHEAP ! :)
a turbo timer eh - will it still work with the alarm/imob ??
your certainly putting some £££ into that car now - i suppose it should pull my finger out and have a look at mine :(
just wish i had a big open area like you do - would make life easier :) :)
I just wish I had a car port like you, get your old man round here lmao.
The dump valve is great (psshht, psshht!). Pip did tell me a trick. there is a Denso dump valve on it already!!! you just have to pull it out of the airbox pipe and block up the hole. I did it but it wasn\'t very loud (whats the piont if you can\'t hear it from the next town lol).
My clutch is doing what you described but you can\'t just lift it back up though, any ideas on this?
:wave
no idea about the clutch , mine just needed assistance to get it back to the top ! - but i got used to it quickly
have a look at the cable and make sure there is no kinks in it !!
so what pipe needs to be removed ?? - sounds like a cheap and nasty way to do it - i suppose you are then making it VITA ! ( from what si told me - Vent Into The Atmosphere ) - so dont quote me on that !!! ha ha ha
is there anychance of a pic so show which pipe needs to be removed and what needs to be blocked ( and blocked with what exactly )
thanks matey
Stu
the car port is just fine - pity the drive isnt 5 foot wider !!
car port :
It\'s a 2second job, I\'ll do it for you on monday if you want.
I\'ll show you my dump valve too (it\'s silver, ooooohh!!)
Anyway, I thought these had hydrolic clutches, I dunno, I\'m a bit fick anyway.
SILVER - NOoooooooooooooooooooooo green is the only colour :) :)
if you show me yours - do i have to show you mine ???
so i take it you are going on monday then - excellent :)
not sure about the clutch - im pretty car thick at the end of the day
Aren\'t we supposed to be discussing power seering, Mr moderator? lol
ooohhhhh like that is it - now where did i leave that ban button
but yes you are 100% right and we should be discussing power steering - and on that note - mine is working fine ( it may not go in the direction you point it ) but it still works :)
lol
I\'ve got all the smilies on my computer that si uses but they only work on MSN Messenger. Do you happen to know how to get them to work on ere?:(
thats not really a power steering question is it now??
i think all si\'s smileys are held on a website somewhere
best idea is to find a post of si\'s , then click the quote button , and it will tell you the location of the smiles ! ( but dont tell si i told you ! )
right u lill grass (http://img15.photobucket.com/albums/v44/scooby_si/grass.gif) if i was really sad i\'d start using them all from my uploaded stuff then you\'d bee stoofed (http://img15.photobucket.com/albums/v44/scooby_si/dance_smily.gif) lmao
