Title: New FC owner
Post by: BinoX on August 15, 2009, 12:47:56 PM
Hey all.

My name\'s Luke and I\'ve recently decided to get an RX7 FC as a bit of a project. Will be joining the MRC next month as buying the FC has taken all of my spare cash this month!

As for the car, it\'s an S5, Turbo II Cabriolet.

Body work isn\'t too bad, small rust hole on the underside of one of the sills that can be fixed up easily enough, but it had all been wax coated and looks pretty good under there :)

Engine has low compression (which I knew before buying it) so it\'s been up on the ramps and I\'ve managed to get the engine out of it and will be attempting a rebuild of it sometime soon. If the engine turns out to be totally knackered with few to no salvagable parts then I\'ll probably start looking into loading it up with a turbo charged 20B :)

Roof has a bit of tearing (No surprise there), but there\'s a company locally that\'ll re-cover it for £200-£300 so it\'s not too bad :)

A couple of things missing here and there though... Screw on petrol cap is missing, as are the headlight surrounds, and finally there\'s no A/C pump, although I dunno if it ever had one (not that I mind, was gunna remove it anyway)

And now... Onto the pictures :)

Up on the ramps, about to begin engine removal:
(Thankfully have a garage at work that I can use for stuff like this :D)

Freshly delivered, sitting next to my RX8:

Welcome. Nice Cab you have there. Hope all goes well with the rebuild. Nice to see your not scared of tackling it yourself.

Thanks all :)

I wouldn\'t say I\'m not afraid of tackling it myself... I\'m actually quite worried. I can see myself getting it all apart, cleaning it up, fixing it and getting it back together... and then not being able to put all the other components back on the engine, and if by some miracle I can, not being able to put all the wires back in the right place!

But no matter, if I have any problems with it, hopefully someone on here will be able to give me a few hints :)

Welcome to MRC Luke,

Nice car and an interesting Project,

As far as I know only one Gen 2 has ever had a 20B laid into it in the U/K but that was an unfinished project and from memory it sat very very high in the car due to the extra length not clering the steering.

As you may know, all 20B\'s are Auto so your first task is to maybe fit an FD or RX-8 up behind it as this is a relatively easy swap

Even though this will be a first try a search as this would have already been done in Australia/ America / Japan,

Keep us posted :Thumbs-up

Thanks :)

I\'m planning to take the 13B apart next week sometime if time allows and I\'ll see where I go from there.

If the 20B is needed I guess I\'ll have to borrow the welder from work and have fun modifying the engine bay :)

Either way this project is gunna be a LOT of fun :)

Nice to see you on board and even better to see a Cab. Any info you need on Cabs then please get in touch as I have stripped these things down several times in my projects and as always theres easy ways and hard ways of doing the most simplist task.
If you need a spare frame for the roof you can have one so that they can fit a new roof on it without having your car for ages but it is better for them to have the car for the fit to get it all nice and tight when the roof is up.
If you can get a roof for £300 made then please advertise that company on here as they cost £350 to ship from the USA. I could not get any cheaper than £700 to get mine made ands that was in Mohair. The vinyl is nice but the mohair (or equivelant) stretches better when the roof is down and less likely to tear in future years. If it does then you can easily apply a patch. The vinyl you have no chance of a patch if its gone in the usual places.
A 20B will be awsome in a cab, as Clive has stated look towards the USA and Aussie for info as they have have been and done all of that.
Plenty of pics along the way and almost compulsary if you chuck a 20B in her.

Well, I\'ve almost finished taking the auxillary parts off the engine. Just 1 to go...

I accidently rounded off one of the nuts holding the intake manifold on, so I\'ve gotta wait until tomorrow now so I can grab my mates rounded off nut remover.

Had a look in through the exhaust ports with a torch earlier and it looks like the rotors are in tact and there doesn\'t seem to be any obvious signs of the seals being broken, just look a bit worn down, but I\'ll see when I get the engine apart soon :D

Been taking a while since I\'m working on it outside at the weekends (Yes, it\'s stored in the dry, I\'m not leaving it out in the rain) and the weather has been far from good. I would do it in the evenings, but my girlfriend is insistent that I spend time with her in the evenings and that I spend too much time with my RX8 without her having to contend with another car, lol :)

Pics to follow, got quite a few good ones, some of which I didn\'t even know were being taken!

Edit: Oh and I\'ve just joined the club, so should be up as a full club member soon :D Yay for me!

Remember if you do rebuild the engine to put in FD corner seal springs and not the FC ones lol

Was planning on using those corner seals you can get with the springs built in, I\'ve heard they\'re more robust than the standard.

Well, it\'s apart at last :) Took some doing, but I finally found the time to do it :D

Below are a couple of images of the freshly de-auxillaried engine :)

And finally below is a picture of the engine taken apart:

Bad news for those hoping that I\'d get a 20B in there though, but good news for my wallet, lol... The rotors and housings seem completely in-tact. It appears that the engine failure was caused by the water and oil seals going. One of them totally disintegrated when I took the engine apart!

So unless I get some cash injection from somewhere or someone offers me a stupid amount of cash for my engine internals, then it\'s gunna just be a rebuild. (Hint, buy my rotors and housings etc and help fund a 20B conversion, lol)

Or buy my broken engine (It has 1 good compression rotor/housing) and bolt it to your engine giving you a 20B ;)
Good work by the way. One day I will do my own rebuild. Not for a while though hopefully!

lol.. Don\'t much fancy trying to build up my own 20B. Although I may give Hayward Rotary a call and see if we can come to some sort of arrangement :D

hey binox, nice to see someone that isn\'t feared of the rotary beard! It\'s spurring me on to tackle mine. most people over here in ireland look at me with one eye brow raised and head tilted to one side, if i mention rebuilding rotarys!!
