I read somewhere, that the 92+ rx7s came out with an 8 bit ECU. The 99+ models came out with a 16bit ECU, giving more responsive acceleration etc and also had power up around the 280BHP mark. Was this power increase due to having upgraded the ECU alone? If so, is it as simple a job as changing out the old 8bit for the 16bit ECU?
If only! No, is the short answer. The later cars also had upgraded turbos, Y-pipes and freer flowing exhausts I believe.
Im fairly sure the 16bit ecu wont fit anyway, or if it does i cant imagine any performance gains from doing it.
The stock ecu\'s are not great if you deviate from standard parts whatsoever
Correct, the engine loom is also different in each series of FD, so you can\'t just plug them in. If you want a better ECU, buy an Apexi PowerFC that can be mapped to your mods.

Apexi did both 8 and 16bit ECUs as well. I know this \'cos I can\'t get a commander anywhere!!!

Yep, there are 6 different PFC\'s for the FD.
There were 2 major updates to the FD, on in \'96 and one in \'99 - each \'generation\' if you like has a different wiring harness and needs a different version of the PFC (and same with the stock ECU\'s)
Confusingly though, they made two different PFCs for each generation of the FD. An \'old\' version, which is probably what you have - that requires a Commander specific to that PFC; and a \'new\' version, which can use the later generic Commanders, IIRC.
PFC Serial numbers for each version (From Dale Clarks PFC FAQ):
FD3S - 96-98 RX-7 old version
FD3S2 - 92-95 RX-7 old version
FD3S3 - 99+ RX-7 old version
FD3S4 - 92-95 RX-7 new version
FD3S5 - 96-98 RX-7 new version
FD3S6 - 99+ RX-7 new version
