Title: Match me a turbo - looking for these specs on the compressor map
Post by: m1tch on July 24, 2009, 09:55:48 PM
Hi guys, just having a look around for a new shiny turbo in the future to keep an eye out for, it will be for my FC with extended ports.

I am looking for 400bhp atf running a boost pressure no more than 1.2bar gauge pressure. Had a look at certain specs and such from FC3S pro and a few other help sites and I am looking for a turbo that can give this kind of figure with a 70%+ efficiency island:

Airflow - 400 lb/min
Pressure ratio - 2.0ish

Does anyone know of a turbo that would allow for this? Im guessing a T04S,R or Z

Did have a look at a GT45 or maybe a T-66

This will be for a fast road/track (with a bit of fun but not serious drag racing lol) so Im not looking for UBER power - 400-450 is plenty for the road!

Would I be looking for a turbo with a hotside of 1.15ish and a cold side of 0.7ish?

i would of thought a/r hotside 1 would be better for fast street? as opposed to 1.15??
bigger hotside a/r = more lag?

But it would need to be big enough to be able to turn the compressor, a tiny tiny turbine isn\'t going to be able to turn a large compressor wheel lol :D

A/r isn\'t a measurement of the wheel but of the housing the wheel is contained with. I\'m using a t04s with a 1.0 a/r and it\'s a good balence between top end power and spool.

Do you know how big a GT45 is lol???

400 bhp at fly go for a T04s. A t04r will give you more than that at 1.2 bar.

If you want something small that spools quick and no lag look at a GT35/40 or T60

With the right porting 450 to 500 is possible at 1.2bar

Using t04s.. I take it your not convinced??

mmmm the porting would have to be big to say the least and will have to match the turbo. Never heard of a T04s making 500bhp.

I have seen @ 1.2 bar a T88 34d making 499.6bhp, a GT4094 making 460 bhp but never a T04s.

Now your gonna tell me this is what yours is running and im gonna look like an idiot :) I know of a T04z that make 450 atw and that was at even higher boost in Blitzboys car

Well I know that you can get just over 300bhp from the stock turbo lol although the AR on the hot side is just over 1 as well :)

Can someone tell me the a/r specs to get the sort of power, im guessing

1.15ar hotside
0.7ar cold?

That hotside could be off anything. Ie i have a GT42 with 1.28 hotside but can have 1.01 or 1.14. The GT40\'s come with a hotside 1.15, that sounds like either a GT35, 40 or Greddy turbo to me as most of the HKS units are 1.0 hotside ( you can buy larger housings )

Yeah I know what size a GT45 is lol :D

I guess that a GT45 sized turbo would be too big? - im being serious though I know rotaries kick out a huge amount of exhaust

I unfortunatly can\'t afford a £1000 turbo - would cost a large % of the value of the car lol does anyone know what kind of turbo I could go for thats fairly cheap, but isn\'t made of cheese?

it could be a GT45 lol

so many turbos can have same hotside and cold, its all down to compressor size. Thats what you need to find out dude :)

Go for T60 or GT35/40 - good turbos and decent power

Im sure I will get beated/flamed for this, but would something like this be too big? lol

Im finding it hard to find a T4 turbo to manifold turbo that isn\'t over a grand or at least £700

Although I just noticed that its ball bearing :( which won\'t last more than 5 minutes in a rotary exhaust lol

Buying that twice will still cost less than 1 Garrett turbo :Giggle

until you need to get another one. I get discount for Time Attack from Turbo Dynamics so if there is a particular turbo you want i can ask them for you as they will be cheaper than other places

Im gonna be running on the stock turbo for a bit, its just been rebuild with 360 thrust bearings and ported, so its not going to be for a bit, just needed to find the right turbo to research into prices etc :)

So im looking at possibly a GT35 or a TO4S?

t04r with a .84 hotside, spools from 1500 ish rpm 1.2 bar i must surely be hitting 420 plus at the fly. why go for a larger hotside if its for the street? legendary spool

Nowt wrong with ball bearing turbo.

Why not go for a T78 - Charlie as SRR uses one and made similar power levels to what you\'re after - I think on a street ported lump.  Should be able to find one cheaply ;)

or you could go for a GT4088, get it from the US and you are looking at £550-£600 delivered
