Title: Oil temp
Post by: davyv on July 24, 2009, 05:02:22 PM
I have tight fitting ducting to my oil coolers with a 99spec front end. My oil temp never goes above 75c. On a 3hr moterway drive last sunday in mild weather at 80-90mph it was 60c. Is that to cool for the oil.

there is a thermostat in the oil cooler shich will keep the temps around where they should be! But I\'m seeing about the same temps to be honest: 65 - 70c going to RS6 but it normaly hovers about the 62 - 65c
Another thing aswell.... it does depend on where your taking the reading from!

Got a Greddy sandwich plate on and my temps are the same, sually see around 65 and if booting her then around 70-75 but never really goes above that. I have twin oil coolers btw and standard original pre-99 spec bumper

i\'ve got an MS Spec-A bumper with no ducting to the oil coolers. if i really boot it on the motorway i can get the oil up to 80, other than that it stays around 70.

someone will probably know better than me but any cooler than 60-70 the oil isn\'t really doing the best job it can.

if u run a good grade oil it should not be a problem, as long as it keeps above 60. At 60 the oil is hot enough to lubricate propperly. I had the same problem as well before on my old setup. But it all depends ofc on where you check the oil temps. The oil temp will go up as soon as it passes the sandwich, so i would not worry if i where you. And it\'s probably about 20 degreece higher in the oil pan.

I just got my oil temp gauge and sandwichplate installed and at normal cruising speed (approx. 100km/h) it shows 62 - 65c.

Good to see the same experiences here because I also thought that it was a little bit to cold.

yea, the best place to get an acurate reading is from the sump.... as the oil has been throught the engine & worked by this point!!
