Title: NooB help please :P
Post by: Jubei695 on July 02, 2009, 11:50:34 PM
Hey all, first post!

Basically friend is selling his 3rd gen RX7 1992, going to see it tommorow for the second time!
He says that the engine was redone about 7k ago so in theory it should be sweet.. after reading through lots of forums and guides though i know that the engine is a dodgy area on the RX7 if it hasent been taken care of so a just a few questions really (http://www.rx7forums.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif)

I know when looking at the engine what i really need to do is check the oil for water and check the coolant for oil. Also read that bubbles are a bad thing will be checking around turbo for oil leakage aswell.
The car itself has actually been taken off of the road so i wont be able to test drive it, is there anyway i can make sure that the engine is in good condition wihout taking it for a test drive? other than the above tests.
Checking the compression is a no no aswell seeing as i cant get it to a garage and know noone with a kit. but am confident that it would check out ok.
Ill be checking for smoke aswell but any tips on basic things i need to look for other than what ive stated?

Also the engine has been flooded so wont start, ive read on this forum that taking out the EGI fuse and turning the engine over will sort that. Is this correct or do i need to take out the sparkplugs aswell? Also when turning over without the EGI fuse in should i hold accelerator down completely?
One more random question, Will a full 1994 stock exhaust fit on the 1992 model?

If it all checks out i will be doing a big overhall of the beast so expect a working log to go up soon :D
Cheers for any help guys sorry for being a newb!!

Without being able to take it for a test drive it will be difficult to asses the function of the turbo pack.

Has it been left flooded for any length of time?

In comparison to most cars there will be alot of water in the oil so you will notice mayonaise in the filler neck, on the dipstick indicates a problem.

To deflood turn it over on full throttle for a bit before removing plugs.

you can do a crude compression check whilst deflooding it.

pull all the plugs and EGI fuse out and get under the car. get your mate to crank the engine a few times to deflood it. now put the top plug back into each of the housings and get him to crank it again, listening for a regular pattern of "phuts". this should give you a rough idea if it has good compression.

to be honest, if you can\'t test drive it i\'d try and get it down for a real low price. this car is pushing twenty years old now so i\'d be more worried about the chassis. it\'s a lot cheaper to drop a new engine into a good shell.

Well he wants £1500 for it, hes a good mate so i reckon hes giving me at a good price.
From what i know the interior needs redoing needs new front rear seats, it had a bloody chav exhaust so wanna get a stock one for it instead, needs new paint job and has Honda alloys on lol so abit of work needs doing but aslong as the chassis is fine and the engine is working good i really dont mind doing all the rest considering the price!
Just about to bob down now and give it a try (fingers crossed!!!)
Its been flooded for a while now mate, apparently my mate dropped it off at his father inlaws and it was running on fumes so the father in law filled it up and it wouldent start. My dad was worried it might have dragged some crap outta the petrol tank through :S

One thing though is that the engine alone is worth that money if its been rebuilt so a very cheap car if you get it for that. It does seem a very cheap car, maybe too cheap.
A new engine or one with that sort of mileage should not flood that easy unless its got a duff battery. You need a fully charged battery to get the best from it to ensure a good start. Be careful you dont buy a lemon here. On the good side if you go ahead then you will get your money back by beaking the car but its a shame to see cars go that way.

Yeah if i were getting the car from anyone else then i would be very suspicious but with it being a mate like this then i think im pretty safe.
Will take my camera with me tommorow and get a video of the engine running and some pics for you all, see what you think :)

When the RX7 starts and there is blue smoke, don\'t panic, as long as it clears after about 10-20 seconds its all good

Well, we took out three of the four sparkplugs cleaned em put in over the gas hob for abit to burn some of the crap off. They were wet through when we took em out.
Put em all back in and turned car over it started for like a couple of seconds and kept firing but then died and flooded again.....took a look and my dad dident attach one of the HT leads to one of the spark plugs! lol what a noob hahaha
I reckon with new spark plugs and new hoses and belts (one is actually split :S), new fluids it will be fine.
Basically needs some TLC!
You see the pic of the chav exhaust that has burnt through the trim and is boiling the rear bumper?? gunna get a stock exhaust for it.

Reckon ive highlighted the main things that need sorting on it, anyone got tips for anything else i should sort??

LOL at the exhaust, I know you can get a CF protector that might be able to stick over that so that the damage is covered up :)

Better than this FC3S:

People must remember that these engines get extremely hot,far hotter than out piston friend.  I had a Nurspec exhaust on mine and it still did that.  However having a slightly longer tailpipe will cure that.
having looked at those pics then you have a bargain if the engine runs or not, looks in really good condition. New plugs will quite often work especially if its not been looked after.

There should be a sticker on the drivers side scuttle panel - you\'ll see it when you open the drivers side door. Model code will be on it, then check up here...

i think thats what happened to mine...it was flooded for bout three days, tried deflooding it everyday with no luck and the mechanic that came out to help was shocking didn\'t have a clue, but managed to get it started and then in less then 2 weeks the water seals went...gutted. but the rex is due to get a rebuild very very soon i cant wait

think that exhaust is a kakimoto stainless system...... realy nice exhaust. But for that much fire to be coming out of the rear to burn it like that, then she is running way too rich!! you should get the odd puff of fire on gear change or over run, but not enough to burn everything like that! the other posibility is the exhaust is drawing in air at some point... this will increase the flameage out the rear!

Mine used to throw fireballs out the rear about 2foot long on the old system, but one I made the stainless one & sealed it properly she doesn\'t flame atall now!

If its running that rich, then changing the air filters will help :)

SUCCESS!

Finally got it started! went and bought some spray that you spray down the air ports and it eventually started, holy crap i nearly .... myself lol! i knew it was going to be a beast but jesus christ that thing is a monster!!
crap loads of smoke came out of the exhaust and took bout 5 mins to clear but after that it was sweet. Think after the amount of time its been stood there theres nothing to worry about!

Just a few things, erm the car was idling at about 1100rpm untill it warmed up abit then it settled at 1500rpm, that ok?
Also boost gauge was sat at about 31, that cool?

31 what?! bar, kg/cm2, psi, mmHg?

if you mean 31 at idle then mine sits at -40mmHg. All that means is that when the throttle is closed, the engine is pulling a vacuum in the inlet manifold (which is what it should do!)

The maximum boost you should see will depend on what its set at. Stock was around 10psi(g) which is roughly 0.68bar(g).

As far as idle speed goes that sounds about right. After starting mine jump to around 1500rpm, (quick heat starting mode to warm the engine up) then drops to around 1000rpm. If you have stuff like aircon, engine fans, lights, etc then teh engine speed will be higher.
