Title: failed mot help
Post by: franky on July 01, 2009, 12:29:51 PM
i\'ve always had probs passing my mot every year it fails and today it failed again.

this time on emissions figures i have are
the limit is 3.50% for co i got 5.57%
               1200ppm for hc i got 1325
i had a new cat fitted last year when if failed does this mean i need another new 1, know it runs rich would this destroy my cat within a year?

also nearside and offside front anti-roll bar linkage has excessive play in pin/bush the said this was easy to fix and 1 got any walk for for it or pic\'s of how to do it

Clive at Mazdarotaryparts, may be able to help Franky, or RX Motors in Dorset,
What year is your car? should it be even having the cat test?

Is it an import 93 or a UK?

If import, you shouldn\'t be having any CAT test..

Yep if its a 93 import then the MOT place should not be doing the CAT test

I maybe wrong here, but those limits are for a non cat test arent they?

Yeah it is non-cat test.  Just as a side note, non cat test limits allowed on FD imports were upto July 1995.

Your car still has to be emission tested and they are doing it at the correct values which is for a non cat test.

Well no expert here, but as i understand it the Apexi base map is a bit on the rich side for a start!unless you know how to adjust it especially to pass the emmissions, (which is possible,) (if it has to have the cat tested!), first i would check the air pump is running, (and pumping) and connected, then personally in the absence of knowledge re-mapping the Apexi, i would fit the standard ecu back on, and try again, very unlikely you would need another cat. But hopefully someone more clued up will be along shortly,
Good Luck,
Bob

i think i got a knights sports ecu. where is the air pump i dont even know what it looks like? i was thinking a remap might sort if but i dont know about thing about maps, or where to take it. i know its down on power only got 245bhp on a roalling road the other day so this could also sort that out?

Air pump is located on the front left hand side of the engine block inbetween the filler neck and the intake pipes.  It has a pulley on it and a belt that drives it.  Often quite common to fail.

As far as im aware the knightsports ecu isnt mappable either, well certainly dont know anyone over here who can do it.

Might be far easier to find a more "friendly" MOT place?

It is indeed mate.  Basically it\'s a pump that feeds fresh air into the exhaust system when on idle.  Obvious ways to check are to see if belt is moving etc and noise etc.  Other way, abit awkward to is to jack up car take of the feed pipe to the exhaust and check if anything is coming out.

Im sure there might be an easier way if someone else knows, but this is what I did when I diagnosed a faulty one on one of my FD\'s.
