Title: Cadwell Park Track Win - Tyres Fail
Post by: noyzboy on June 30, 2009, 10:17:48 PM
I had a great time at Cadwell but I was a bit apprehensive about the tyres after picking bits of soft squigy rubber off of my rims.
Took the R888s off today and put the Goodyear F1 roadtyres back on.
The R888s looked bad. They were new !!!. This was their first outing
Rather suprised at the result considering I drive like a granny and all the MX-5 pi**ed past me. I reckon I did about 38 laps during the day...not continuously.
The circuit has long right handers at Charlies, Park and Chris Curve.
Thr nearside front looks the worst and the offside rear looks the best.
Any ideas how I could avoid a repeat of this tyre destruction. I was running 31/32 psi on RX-8 rims. Are R888s just too soft for a RX-7 ???

Any helpfull ideas out there.

We where discussing if it was junk off the line from worn off rubber. Chatting to one of the MX5 guys they said people shaved them down to 5mm first and they would last longer because the blocks stood up to more hammer.

Clives tyres seemed to look fine, my KU15\'s where in the melted welly state ! And they are my road tyres :Giggle Will scrub off in a short amount of time !

I\'m not too sure from the photos what\'s looking bad about the 888s?

The rolled over rubber from the edges looks to be normal for any decent track use on most tyres on most cars to me.

225 width looks a tiny bit narrow - you shoudl be able to run 235 fronts and 265 rear to give more tyre contact - not sure how much it\'d help though!

yep - they look all good bud and how they should! Have been out several times with my brother and uses michelin pilot sport 2\'s..... before we go up to the track they look like that....... the rubber will bead up, roll off the tyre as they warm up and then new stuff will be on there after your next session..... just how they are supposed to be!

Looks like you got them upto temp nicely! #;o)

Thasnks for the comments.
I was thinking the stuff that was not rolled up tread block edges might have been picked up off line when I moved over to let quicker guys through...or maybe I was picking up stuff I ripped off on the previous lap. LOL.

I\'ve got a set of RX-8 rims for track days and Autosolos.( £100 on fleabay)so I run 225s. Isn\'t that similar to early FDs ??
On reflection a set of 17s would hasve been better as there is a wider selection of used track day tyres available for 17s.

225 on the stock 16" rims with 50 profile IIRC!

Most of us on 17s seem to run 235/45/17 front and 255/40/17 or 265/40/17 rear.  Whatever gives a close rolling radius to the stock tyres is fine but, as you say, 17" rims do have a wider (and cheaper!) selection of tyres.

I had brand new Toyo T1R\'s on for Cadwell (well 200 mile driving there) and my tyres are the same. NS front took a beating! its actually discoloured around the edge of the tyre. I wouldn\'t worry about yours they\'ll scrub back in given time.

31/32psi (cold) is way to high - no wonder they wore out, they also wouldn\'t have been  ery grippy.  Once warm they\' d have been running 40psi+ easily.

For any list 1b tyre you need to start with low presure, the tyres are soft and warm up rapidly which raises the presure of the tyre. When you come in from a session with hot tyres the presure should be around 31psi.

You need to go out with around 24-26psi in the tyres, that should see them take a lap to come up to temp and presure and last for a session, and wear well.

I used a single set of R888\'s in last years race season, they are not too soft for the RX7.

What he said. I sprint using 888s and start from 24psi cold..

Funnily enough I started with my 28 cold in my Falkens and took 3 lbs out over the first two outings to get them feeling right, mind you because they were road tyres you could only get 4 laps out of them before they went off !.

To me Martins tyres looked barely scrubbed and looked messy through debris from off line and coming back to the pits.

If these tyres were too soft the tread would have overheated and you would have had a curtain of rubber hanging off the insides where the tread had rolled across,

I found that my tyre temps were to high doing laps of the Nurburgring so I changed the cold pressures to 24 front and 26 rear and after a lap the fronts were 32 hot and the rears 36!!!
Title: Heating Cycles ??
Post by: noyzboy on July 31, 2009, 09:30:23 PM
Being a Cadwell Junkie, I was back at Cadwell on the same tyres last week. And I\'ve done an AutoSolo on them since...where they went very well.
I\'ll post up more pics when I take them off again.
I was hardly picking up any rubber off the rims this time, and I was going quicker.
Maybe the heat cycling has something to do with it.
