Yep my second FD now and never had a problem ( touch wood ) and its far from standard.

You go on Skyline Owners club and there will be loads of people there with problems. You mod an engine expect problems eventually. Same on any engine.

For example a simple rebuild on a RB26 lump with some inbternal mods and your looking at 10K rebuild price. You can get 3 13b rebuilds out of that and probably have more power

i had mine for 4 years and never had any serious issues, i had a few issues with the first turbo not boosting properly but never had any problems with the main part of the engine.  I have always driven it quite hard aswel :chat  I have a mate who has an impreza running simliar power to my rx and he blew his engine twice in 2 years, he works for subaru so knows his stuff has spent 50k on the car and has it tuned by one of the best tuners in the country.  If Rx7s where that bad why would any of us have them??? I admit there are alot of poor examples out there, they tend to blow up if not looked after or tuned properly thats what gives the car a bad name, I think if you look after one, treat it right and have it well tuned with the right mods they are very reliable

What you have to remember is that a lot of people will only post when they have a problem, so of course the forum will have lots of people with faults.  Plus there are a lo of cars on here >15 years old, is it surprising things break eventually?

We all like our Rex\'s cos they\'re gorgeous, unusual, and will eat most other cars for breakfast with a third less power because they are RWD, so light and chuckable.  I love Evo\'s and GTRs too, but if I can only have one toy it\'s gonna stay the RX7!

But you know that, you\'re just trolling :)

ive had 3 rexs now, been  tempted away by the thought of owning of an evo, skyline , escort cossi, but after test drives they all all good in there own right but none give the feedback the rex does. none of mine ever gave me any hassle. except soliniod problem one one. apart from that all good.

in my opinion best value for money prpoer sports car available

a) didnt have uprated cooling
b) running stupid injector duties on full boost
c) no boost controller
d) i was trying to blow it up

I have had Mk1 rx7, FC\'s by the bucket load and an FD. All of them fun, all of them a PITA at times but totally worth it. I think that if you get access to this whole forum then you will see a lot of hard work by countless people modifying, experimental work, renovation etc and it sets an outstanding presidence on what you can achieve. I really dont think this forum is all about engine rebuilds at all. That will happen to some of us but please dont let that put you off a rotary car of some sort. All mine have been 100% reliable.................ok I had a rebuild in my FD but then I guessed as much when I bought it and my FC had a rebuild because it was engineered wrongly after its last rebuild causing it to wear prematurely. Again I bought the car knowing it was to be a rebuild.  Other cars of this stature have the same problems as along with performance comes the cost of maintenance and technical challenges, however compared to them we are still cheap.  It is far from being the most unreliable car ever made.

As said, of course the majority of posts will be problems. People dont often post things like "another month of rex ownership gone by, and had no problems".

People will only post with problems or queries. Its the same on any forum.

I`ve had my FD 3 years, ive also owned an mr2 turbo, integra type r, evo`s, impreza`s, gt4`s, lotus elise...and the rex has been the most reliable by far.

Its all about looking after them and driving them properly. If you look after your car, they will look after you. :)

My car\'s now 20 years old, is regularly given a good workout and has it\'s share of problems.  Is it unreliable - not really - it\'s had parts failing - which after this length of time I would kind of expect, but nothing that can\'t be sorted relatively easily and cheaply in many cases.

Is it the most unreliable car - no - I\'d say talk to vauxhaull owners who brought brand new cars and are on their 3rd or 4th fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator.  Or talk to Volvo owners who\'ve replaced throttle body sensors for the 2nd or 3rd time.

All I can say is you didn\'t drive a good rex if you think they aren\'t worth it, and for that I feel sorry for you. :(

Rx7 - excellent drive :cheers

Hi Aubec,

Your right that this may have been put up purely as inflammatory post and if that is the case then we would ask Johnny to close the door behind him as he is leaving,  just like we would expect anyone else to who doesn\'t like either our cars or our club,

However it could be that this is a valid question and I am sure if this is the case he will let us know,

One thing I will say though is that this has brought some very good comments out from our members as to why we all love our cars,

Hi Chris,

Like you I looked back and considered the same scenario, however it is clear that some people visit this forum every day despite being completely uninterested in bringing any thing constructive to the club and actually look for ways of posting their dislike for the club, in other words some have nothing better to do with their lives !

Well you probably never drove one that is working correctly and cared for.
I can give you a passenger ride at RS in mine, make sure you bring some toilet roll and some new pants for after for yourself lol

My car is the height of reliable at the moment since my new engine config last year, 60 plus high powered drag runs ,10 plus 10 second quarters, driven regularly at weekends on the roads, ! No breakages! , not bad for a 555 bhp :burnout

hmmmmm what a waste of time, i dont like alfa romeos but dont go on there forums slating them and respect that there are people out there that do like them.  At the end of the day cars are all down to personal preference and opinions, its good to have a bit of banter now and again but as long as it doesnt get nasty.  My mate has a Supra TT and im always telling him its slow and crap but he knows im only messing but if another guy ccame along who he didnt know and said your supras crap he might get offended.

All you done is proved how much our members love their rotaries, and the forum is not full of people with blown engines.  We have over 6500 members regsitered on this forum and thousands of posts, so you must trawled through an awful lot of them.  Think your talking to the wrong guy with regard to getting a rotary, better to speak to the members here who could offer better advice!

soz johnny just assumed by the way you wrote your post you where looking at slating the car.  It may be this importer has had a few problems with them therefore having a bad view on the car, im sure if you asked several other importers they may tell a diferent story some may like them and some may not.  like i said before its all down to personal opinions, one person may say rx7s are crap supras are awesome, another person says supras are crap skylines are awesome blah blah blah

I owned a FD for 4 years and have recently sold it, it was the first performance car i have owned, it was a really sad day to see it go and i really did not want to sell it more of a case of needed to.  I will however be looking at buying another performance car in a year or so, ive known for a while i would have to sell my FD so have considered many other cars, skyline, evo, pulsar, impreza, soarer, integra etc etc but evertime i come back to the FD.  I have experienced many other performance jap cars in different states of tune as i run a japanese car club so have had passenger rides or driven many of the different performace jap car you can get.  Still the FD is the car for me, none of the others offer the same thrill, raw performance, looks that i want

I can kind of see where johnny is coming from regarding the importer!! A friend of mine imports cars & they imported an FD (which I stripped & sold on here for them) but after 6 months she threw a tip, purely because they knew nothing about the cars, ran it on std fuel with 1bar boost on a std jap ecu, full exhaust system & REA Intake. as a result the thing whent bang & now they will not import another no mater who asks for one!

It\'s the old saying "once bitten, twice shy!" But I can vouge for the reliability of my FD, starts every time hot or cold & she is well over due a rebuild due to mileage!! I\'ve done about 15k miles since I bought it 4 years ago and never once have I ended up on the side of the road! and ontop of this you have the epic handleing & the WOW factor due to their rarity. even now there are more R35 GTR\'s in my locality than RX7\'s!!!

The question quite clearly is a \'loaded one\'. If you meant to ask how people find their rotaries for reliability - then phrasing it another way would definitely have been the way to go.

But to pick apart your first question - you start with what seems like resignation to an already known or conceived response you might get, and then lead in with a negative - asking if there is anyone who has never had problems - perhaps to ask what sort of problems people had had might have given you less of a caustic response from people.

Then you continue with what can only be described as a very innacurate and sweeping statement about the forum being full of people with blown engines - I suppose in a way that is true - most of the forum members have turbo\'s or supechargers :Giggle - but I believe you were referring to engine failure - I think if you come to RS6 you might see quite a few rotaries under their own power. :driving

Then of course you finish with a statement that clearly is going to get people on the defensive about their cars.

Go ahead and re read your first question - I\'ve quoted it to save you going back to the first page - and you\'ll see that it wasn\'t well conceived and not really asking for information - it appears to be designed to get a reaction - well it\'s achieved it\'s goal. :spank

Ive done 15,000 mile in my FD and replaced a water pump and passenger window switch, better than my last Scooby.
I believe most engine trouble is caused by add ons and then a lack of tuning or servicing.
Last week while Iwas washing the car I had a wee pug owning boy racer tell me my engine needs rebuilt every 20,000.
I told him they last a bit longer than that, he then said RX8\'s definately need a rebuild every 20,000 and he had 180bhp and it would be a good race as his car is lighter, I just laughed.
My point was lots of people have a strong opinion on rotaries without having any evidence to back it up.
