Title: Apex seal clearancing
Post by: drtool on June 30, 2009, 06:21:52 PM
Can anyone tell me what the correct apex seal clearance is for a 12A twin dizzy running 6mm carbon apex seals?

I am interested in the difference between the length of the apex seal and the minimum width of the rotor housing. New seal measure 69.97mm.

My Haynes manual, InterEurope manual and Gleen\'s Mazda book all state 0.01-0.05mm.

Mazdamotorsport states 0.09-0.10mm.

Does anyone have a Mazda RX2 or RX3 engine service book and can tell me what it says?

Any help appreciated.

Hi and welcome to Mazdarotaryclub,

RX-3 haynes Manual says 0.01-0.05,

Mazda Workshop manual RX-4 12A 0.05-0.07

However if it\'s for race only and always high reving it may be better to go with the Mazdamotorsport.com clearances

Hope this helps

Hi Clive,

No, it\'s just a stock standard street engine in my RX2.

I thought that Mazda motorsport might have been giving greater clearances for race engines too.

To correct my earlier statement, the Glenn\'s Mazda Book states 0.05-0.10 not as previously stated.

I need to be sure. The engine has been put together, but it\'s binding at the rotors at 0.03mm clearance, which is clearly too little. Obviously I don\'t want to increase the clearance too much and lose compression at start up.

Can anyone here confirm?

As Clive has said you need around 0.05mm because if you go tihter then often little chunks are taken off the ends of the apex seals due to being too tight.
Measure many points around the rotor housing and find the narrowest area and size to suit that. Make sure rotor housing is not warped or shrunk to much in areas too.
Regards
Carl
