Title: A Beano to Brighton (aka - Coastal run) 13th september
Post by: Ada7 on June 28, 2009, 03:25:03 PM
I\'ve had this idea going around in my head for a while now and a couple of other have mentioned similar ideas so i thought i\'d put up a date and see what responce i got.
We\'ve done the tunnel/london runs in the passed and they\'ve been great but who would be up for a coastal run to Brighton on the 13th of september? Why then i hear you ask. Well there\'s lots of other shows and events happening and this seemed as good a time as any to do it and we could still have some nice weather for it.

The plan i\'ve thought of so far is to meet up in Guildford in the morning as this is a good central location for people to get to. Then drive down the A281 to the A24 near Horsham. Then down the A24 to the A272 and across this to the A23 and then down to Brighton.

Anyone coming from the east of London then feel free to come all the way to Guildford or if you want to meet us part way (at the A272 - A23 juction somewhere) then that would be cool to. If someone could let me know of somewhere in this area to stop and meet that would be very helpful
Also if someone knows of a spot down in Brighton itself that we can park up easily that would be helpful. Drop me a PM to tell me about it.
Now if people wanted to go on somewhere else from there after a while then we can sort something out, maybe over to Worthing or somewhere??
Got this off Mulitmap, not the best picture but gives you an idea
(http://i436.photobucket.com/albums/qq83/Adam-Blackshaw/multimap_map.png)

Hope a load of you guys and girls can make it and we can make this a fun event and get the roads full of a long line of rotaries :D :driving

Hi Adam.
I know there is a tunnel on the A27 going from Brighton to Lancing/Worthing... not very long but some good sounds whenever i go through it.

Southwick Hill tunnel :yes The only good thing about commuting Wort\'ing to Brighton. Mind you, I came out of it at WOT t\'other day, and sure enough, the rozzers were sitting in their favourite laybay at the bottom of the hill :2Mad Thank the Lord for Uncle Clive\'s new brakes he sent me :D

Sounds good! and I LOVE the A272 -  I drive this on dry days just for the hell of it - such a nice hilly run! I\'m coming from Basingstoke, but will meet you guys at the A272/A23 junction as this road is not to be missed!

Good Idea... i\'ve done a couple of runs from Winchester to Brighton following the Famous A272 (http://www.sabre-roads.org.uk/wiki/index.php?title=A272) all the way but only with one other rotary, but no other roads and nothing near the coast!! this will be awesome!!

Anyone coming from the north of Hampshire?!? (Basingstoke way)

I may have to do a wee bit of p***ing on the bonfire now lads and lasses.... done a bit of checking on the Brighton council website; that weekend in September, the Saturday is the Brighton Speed Trials along Madiera drive and the Sunday is the Ace Cafe Reunion run, also to Madeira Drive, where they can have anything up to 40000 bikes turn up.

Short version....you\'re getting nowhere near it in an RX-7 :(

Looks like the Marina or nuthin then

Post by: Ada7 on June 29, 2009, 06:09:54 PM
Thanks for looking in to that Nik. Is there anyway to resever some space at the Marina (anyone we can call) or is it just a matter of turning up when we do and hoping we fit in?

Adam
Title: A Beano to Brighton (aka - Coastal run) 13th september
Post by: Nik da Greek on June 29, 2009, 06:22:37 PM
Not sure about the Marina. I did enquire about the Madeira Drive, and if there\'s no event booked, we could have just turned up and staked our claim to a bit. Sadly, there are events both days that weekend, which buggers that up pretty soundly. With that said, the Speed Trials are a top day out, and I\'ll be going this year again. Andy (papercup) will be running his lovely FD again, so worth going to cheer him on even if you\'re not into the petrolheads nirvana of the rest of the field.

I don\'t think the Marina\'s gonna be a problem, but I\'ll ask for more info from my contact on the Council

Hi Clive. Think Lisa has already answered this for you by putting your names on the list. I was happy to change the date if we got the support for JAE but if it is just the one person then maybe we should do this for now and next year we\'ll really push the promotion of the JAE show hard to get us all there :D
Are you bring your rx4 or the b? :)

BTW, what time do you guys think we should meet and set off. Midday in Guildford??

Drove that rtoute last night with a couple of mates, one with a black 8 and one with a TT... even with all the rain and the fog it was an epic drive. we left pease pottage services at about 10pm cut straight accross to horshame then on to guilford. stopped for a while then headed back the same way... the run back was even better. a little foggy on the high parts but epic. if i can make this i will but its mighty close to some other engagmentsa i have booked.

Nice one Beasty. I think i\'ve decided on a meeting point. Just off the A3 is a big Tesco\'s with a huge car park. Easy to find for all coming from the A3 :D
I\'m just worried my car isn\'t going to be going on this now due to my engine problems :o

Parking down the Marina can be a little difficult sometimes, the multi storey is off limits really as its not really front splitter friendly! Other options include the Macdonalds or Asda car parks (Both of which will be heaving on a sunday around lunchtime when we arrive :(

There is always Black Rock which is at the far end of Madeira Drive, there is a good chance of getting parked either in the car park there or just outside of it and its quite a nice backdrop for a few photos etc, just an idea.

Not much to do there though except look out to sea lol

Madeira Drive may well be closed at the Pier end because of the Ace Cafe bike run thing, which is why the Marina was suggested in the first place. Dunno if the Marina end of Madeira Drive would still be open, though? As above, I\'m sure we can find somewhere, even if it means going out of town a bit to the Devil\'s Dyke Tavern or something like that

I know there is a Pub up there, with a large car park, also there is parking along the Cliff area, but there is nothing there in the way of a Cafe/Ice Cream etc.....

Its a question of how long we want to stay in the area, but the Brighton Marina would be best place & more people would be down there :),but parking could be a major problem :(

A decision needs to be made,as there is only 2 weeks to go ;)

Well i would like to stick to trying to park at the marina. If we get there and find its to busy and going to be to hard to get us all in then we could do with a Plan B place to go, so if anyone knows of a pub or something in that area with a big car park can they please say. :D

Title: A Beano to Brighton (aka - Coastal run) 13th september
Post by: Nik da Greek on September 04, 2009, 08:52:41 AM
Well, the problem is that none of the pubs near the seafront in Brighton are likely to have any kind of car park, you\'d have to go back out of town for that. Can\'t remember (and cant be arsed to check :p) if I suggested the Devils Dyke tavern before? Likely to be busy on a sunday, but quite a parge car aprk and fantastic views. Or, since we\'d be out that end of town anyway, we could whizz accross to the Beachy Head Tavern via Seaford and that, it\'s about ten miles or so. From memory they have a big car park and anyone whos motors\' gone pop on the way down can always avoid the pain of a rebuild by jumping off the cliff :). that was a joke, btw. Allegedly :o

Hopefully someone who lives in Brighton can offer some alternative ideas, just in case? It\'s been too long since I spent any time in or around, I just drive to the station for work and if I go out in Brighton I tend to go by train cos then its free so I\'m hopelessly out of touch

In my previous post, when I said "quite a parge car aprk" obviously what I meant to say was "quite a large car park". Thankyou. Just wanted to clear that up. Move on now, nuthin to see here :o
Title: A Beano to Brighton (aka - Coastal run) 13th september
Post by: Test Drives Unlimited on September 05, 2009, 02:09:52 PM
Ok then,I have been down to Brighton this Morning & found a Plan B if required :)

First you all need to know the following :-

On the A272 between Cowfold & the Connection to the A23 Brighton Exit, there are Road Works, which started on 15/06/09 & go on for 16wks :( ,I very much dought we will get all the cars through in one go,so for catch up just before the A23 Junction, there is a Nursery & Truck Stop on the Left, where we could drive in to allow the rest to catch up :)

Once on the A23 Southbound to Brighton,it is a fairly easy drive, although be WARNED there is unmarked Police Cars Patrolling that road all the time 7 days a week :(

Then its a matter of driving into the centre of Brighton & making sure you are all in the correct lanes (I drive in Brighton quiet a bit :2eek) otherwise you will end up going the wrong way & it will save you carving other drivers up :Laugh

Once we are down at the Seafront,we Turn Left towards the Brighton Marina, now be WARNED it is 30mph or less & there are Speed Cameras with Marked & Unmarked Police Cars Patrolling this Road all the time :(
There is alot of Roadworks for the Exit off the Roundbout for the Marina,so if you get in the wrong Lane,do`nt Panic,as you can go onto the next Roundbout & Turn round & then go off the Slip Road into the Marina :)

So there should,as Adam has said enough Parking for 14 to 20 RX Cars :driving, but failing that then we could go on to Telescombe Cliffs, where I found a Pub,with a reasonable sized Car Park :driving

Badgers Watch Pub perhaps Nik would be so kind to look up the Full Address in his Telephone Directory :)

So I hope the above is of some help & be free to comment :cool

Post by: Test Drives Unlimited on September 05, 2009, 02:18:30 PM
Also Adam, should be able to Pre-Warn us about the A281 from Guildford to Horsham as well.

As far as I know, the A24 is all ok & the A272 between West Grinstead Traffic Lights & Cowfold, are free of Roadworks :yes

So looking forward to our Beano Run on Sunday 13th september :wiggle, except I will have to do the drive in the SAAB,as still can`t drive my 8 for more than 15mins :(

I didn\'t take anywhere near enough pics, and many would be very similar to Mr. Beast\'s but I\'ll do the ones that aren\'t....

Horde of disreputable rotary types descend on unsuspecting Tescos car park, much to the enjoyment of most locals and to the curious enragement of one flabby beard-wearing buffoon who seemed to take great exception to it! Weirdo...

I didn\'t get the chance to ask about the bodywork on this \'8, but it\'s very different with the little bumper bars front and rear. Someone\'s gonna have to fill me in on the details, please?

The only real traffic snarl-up of the day, when we, errrrm deviated from ze Plan a bit :p What this pic doesn\'t show is my water temp gauge reading 98-ish, the heater and blower full on melting my feet and the huge clouds of smoke belching from the exhaust as my smoking issues continue to worsen :(. Oh well, another rebuild, then....

Nik, the Winning Blue 8 belongs to Ray.  It\'s got the full Mazdaspeed kit plus those bull bars to prevent damage to it when the holiday-goers to the area of Essex where Ray lives use his nice kit to judge parking distance.  It\'s a very nice 8!

Thanks Will. :wiggle

The bars are custom made the a guy who ignores the \'keep off the grass signs\' :Giggle and who swears he will never make another set. Can\'t make out if that is because he thinks they spoil the cars look, or because he spent so much time, effort and no small amount of skill in constructing them, and that aged him in the process.:D

But as Will says they are in an effort prevent the day trippers parking their Ford Escort (substitute whatever crap car you can think of) against the vunerable body parts. Not entirely successful, but have certainly saved some damage.:(

Many thanks for yesterday people even if it was a bit like the Fox Trot, slow, slow, quick, quick, slow, hang on I forgot the STOP bits :Giggle.

It was great to look in the mirror and see a stream of varied Rotarys coming down a beautiful English country lane :mmmm,

Real nice day out with real nice people :Thumbsup!

Had to change horses to clarify what Ray has said above as it was business related,

When Ray said he wanted "Bull Bars" incorporating in his new body kit and unsuccessfully trying to talk him out of them, I embarked on designing and making what I called "hot rod" style bars that would be as discreet as possible and follow the body lines of the car,

After deciding I would use the 3 RX-8 towing eyes to mount the bumper irons the first problem was that we only had one at the back so a new towing eye had to be fabricated and welded to the boot floor,

Next up was that I knew the bars were going to get hit so the bar mounts were made deliberately to fold up to save damage to the chassis however the bars are made from CDS roll cage tube and they ain\'t never going to bend !

As Ray said though, "never again", which should make this one real unique RX-8

:p oops! getting lost twice in 1 day i think is quite an achievement! first time was kinda my fault by just following the RX8 in front and 2nd time was me just being a dope and putting the incorrect (yet close) postcode into the Tom-Tom! Was still a good day even though i spent a few hours going round in circles!

The day didn\'t start too well either as the night before I hit something on the road that caught my air duct under the oil cooler and then in turn it all ripping off and taking with it most of my wheel arch liner too!!! Didn\'t fancy having a tick tick tick noise or a burst/damaged tyre, so a few cable ties later and it\'s pulled up outta the way, great start!!!

Once again great company and lovley cars. Will get my pics up when i can.

As for the videos! Hmmmmm, Adam you were right - i have 2 mins of videos checking out my car roof!

I\'m going to rename this to the "FAIL RUN" for me!

Great day all in all and would like to thanks those again that made this day happen and those that attended... looking forward to the next one!

Finally joined the 21st Century and got some vids up on YouTube. Only short clips, I\'m afraid, but I think they capture the essential je ne se quoi of the whole event (but I dunno what it is, arf! Lol at the French joke) *ahem*

....thanks to Jo and Adam for their camerawork, especially Madame le Jo, a natural film director if ever I saw one :rollinThe start of the first vid is a total classic :D

Sorry they\'re a bit brief, but we\'re going for quality not quantity here :Thumbs-up. Now I\'m slowly getting the hang of this camcorder malarkey I promise to do better on the next one.

Aaron, where are the pics you promised?........
