I can see the exhaust peeping out - looks very much made for each other, that engine and that car. Low C of G, fairly back in the car....looks right.

If I remember correctly, the person who spotted me which ended up with me joing the forum was running a rotary in a westfield chasis - Bill Shruvington. Sadly no longer a member - but I suspect someone has contact details.

If you do a google search for rocus or low cost rotary you can find some rotaries in \'7\' type crates.

such as : http://www.geocities.com/phbura@ameritech.net/index.html

There was also an attempt at a commercial venture along these lines with the Viking:

http://www.modified.com/features/0302scc_laminar_concepts_viking_srx7/index.html

This has to be one of the ultimate cars to put this kind of engine into :)

The last time I spoke to Bill was when we loaded his westfield onto my trailer.
Yes its his old car. Purchased in quite a sad state and with out engine and box. We are using my 13b 4 port with full bridge on a 51mm IDA Weber. Close ratio gear box etc etc. A lot of work has gone into tidying up and taking weight out of the car

I reckon it will be worth it in the end though - before I bought the RX7 I was seriously considering a Westfield Seight - although it would have not been a practical daily car ;)

I\'ve been offered  a locost chassis that is complete but has never been SVA\'d-it\'s gotta 1300 x flow but has been built very well, the chap just lost interest. Can you do a bit of an ongoing update kiwi? I\'d be interested to see how it pans out and let you figure out the awkward bits. :bandit:

Good luck with the build anyway-it\'s gonna be spectacular.

I will have it on the scales at work n a couple of weeks when we sneak out for a we test session. I only drove it around my back garden but just trying to get it out of the garage made me realize that this is a beast. I am going to have to remember I am not racing in a tin top any more.
I think I am going to put skid marks down in my shorts.

Just a little update.
After running a 13.4 at the jap finals and fighting with a miss fire all day we took it home and drew up a list of "to do" jobs.
I got an invite by another of my sponsors to go to shakespeare on 31st of october for a photoshoot and obviosly the obligatory thrash down the strip.
At this stage I said yes but also said I wouldnt be there until after lunch as even though its a bit of a detour for me I got the car booked in for a roller session at WGT. After setting off from castle kiwimazda at 5am I made good time and and we had the car set up and ready to go for 9am. After trying lots of differing combos on jets, timing fuel pressure etc etc we had 140bhp at the wheels. I was hoping for more than this but we are now working on it to get it sorted out and where it should be. But the decission was taken to miss giving it a thrash and also the photo shoot was now missed also. Thats very dissapointing. So I set off home for another 4hr drive.
many things were learnt the most important being
Take some one(preferably good looking lady friend(if you dont have one borrow one) for the journey to keep you company
Remember to stop at the services for a pee when you need it and not think that you can make it to the next one. It does not matter if you do not like the slip road going in, just go and have a pee or you will get soaked standing in the pouring rain between the tow car and trailer trying not to loose you dignity.
Eat food. I finally ate on the way home at about 4.30pm. when I was finished so were burger king for the day.
After the trailer was taken back to its home and I got back in doors I tried to drink a whiskey at home about 8pm but nodded off and made my trousers look like I had missed the services on the motorway. What a waste of whiskey

It will be a lot of fun. I am going to use it for sprints and the odd hillclimb.
I finished 1st in class and 3 o/all in the ACSMC sprint championship with my old FB circuit car in 2006. So once I get to grips with this hope fully ANOTHER championship will come our way

I had a rare moment of enthusiasim today and have been pottering on a couple of little projects.
I started to replace the short inlet manifold on the race car with a longer one, picked up a 12a motor from Mad Kiwi who I must say thanks for the bodacious skids in my old 323. There were nearly skids in my shorts after the car tryed to go through the wall of the warehouse next door.
And puchased 2 series 1 shape rxs. More than likely one for spares and one is a real gem by the looks and this will be a keeper I think.
Then it was situ back to normall and I couldnt be arsed again.
Some of you know things are not quite right at the mo and I am off to the quack tomorrow to see if I can get something sorted. I am sick of iboprofeen. LOL cant even spell it

Let me know what sprints you will be going to, maybe we can compare notes (although an RX8 build hasn\'t got alot in common). I haven\'t started building yet, still planning, info is a www.elworth.info (http://www.elworth.info)

I expect to be at a few ACSMC sprints, Goodwood is always a blast, sadly Longcross is off the schedule for 2010, I\'m told Abingdon is a great event, Eelmoor is just a riot watching the 4WD offroad boys.

If we keep it yes.
I cant do Goodwood as there is no way it will pass noise there.
Longcross is fantastic and I raced ,y old 1st gen circuit car there and had some very good overall placings especcially in the rain. Its a good leveler. But yes its off for the forseable future due to the cost of running the event with venue hireage fees.
Eelmoor is hosted by the car clob that I am in(Farnborough District) If you saw the 4wd you saw my old 7. I think I finished 5th overall that day.
As for Abingdon you gotta do it. simples. 2 sprints in one day for the cost of one and a huge beer tent. I normally co drive in a rally car the following day

Yes, Goodwood are very picky on noise. I did a loud track day there on 9 Nov. First noise test failed at 109dB!!! Repacked box and added a second can and just got through, excellent day running 92\'s cp a 95.13s sprint time. I did the Chieftan in 08 in the snow (day for the rally boys) and the Scorpion this year (got 2nd best time of the day as single seaters not allowed); the \'snake\' is just the most awesome piece of track I\'ve ever driven. I did Eelmoor in 08 and was beaten by a 450BHP Seight driven by Simon Besant (that\'s a drop dead gorgeous car that is impossble to drive in a straight line).

I\'ll mark up Abingdon on the calendar but the other half is planning a holiday in June so might not be able to make it.

I was at the snow longcross watching and myself and Carl stevens(no relation with a 2.0 Escort) have set faster times in chucking down rain with standing water which we thought was worse than the snow

Cheers John
With the RX we ran in the upto 2.0ltr class Modified production. Due to the fact they only want rotary engined cars multiplied by 1.5 in sprints. Rallys has no engine multiply factor.
With the westy I will be in sports and libre as it is not road legal(lights etc removed) The way I read the blue book though means if it were to be road legal it may fit in a road going class somewhere even though it were not an option to have the rx engine in a westy from the factory. The blue book states that any engine may be used so long as 5000 road going engines were made. I am trying to get this clarified by the MSA as I would love to make it road legal and upset some of the "normal" cars

Update time
Well not much has changed apart from doing a quick engine change into another car with the correct length exhaust and a bit of fiddling with the various length inlet manifolds(again:Yawn)
Still as unresponsive as ever. Wont rev past 7 and a bit K. So now the engine is out of the "other" car and is on the bench. Now I am no specialist tuner but I am going to give it a crack. I now dont have any wonga left after throwing money at it to try and find the fault. And yes I have been methodical here. Change one thing see if it makes a difference..you all get my drift. I was quite dissolusioned by all of this a month or 2 ago but this must be sorted "at all costs" so to speak
I will put pics up as soon as I can but for now it looks like I will be unwrapping my engine not my christmas prezzies

Its quite funny what you see on other web sites when you are looking for parts. I was doing a search today for some Nova and Westy bits and came accross an obscure little place selling these bits. The description just cracked me up. They had no idea how to promote their product and now I cant find it again to share.  Gutted  .
But on the plus side the nova was given an outing tonight and the local Halfrauds could not be left off the list. Gave a few boys a run for their money all the way up to 70mph. upon revisiting Halfrauds the intrest was in the Nova high. Some of them obviously have a genuine intrest in go as well as show.

Tried everything. Its been on the rollers and all manner of jets were tried.
It also runns 10mm fuel lines and a carter fuel pump which pumps the same as the holley unit. Also has a holley fuel reg and guage. Coils, leads, plugs and dizzy were all changed one by one but no change. The exhaust primaries are not quite the right length but we are not talking feet here but more like inches so we doubt that would make a difference. But not to worry I have a plan.:Giggle. But I must say that while it does not rev it certainly seems to be quick but I think that is more to do with the car being about 500kg as opposed to 800kg that my old circuit series one was

Got busy pulling an engine to bits tonight. At some stage it has managed to get water in the sump. Its sooooooo cold out in the garage that the water in the sump had frozen:eek I could not believe it.

Finished pulling it apart tonight to find that the only things worth keeping are the irons and stationary gear. The rest is only good for the scrap bin. Ally housings are totally shagged so no resale value there.
On to the next one and see what joy of joy that brings

How hard can it be
I went out today and purchased a die grinder. Took it home hooked it up to the compressor and away I went. Got the template and transfered the pattern across and away I went. My compressor is a little bit small so I had to wait for it to catch up but I could see progress.I will take it to work this week and hook it up to big bertha and see what happens. If it all ends in failure I can always use the die grinder for stirring the tea

Continued on my quest to find good parts toaday and dissmantled another
12a. This one had the letter m and r5 ithink stamped on each side of the centre iron. The ports were coniderably smaller on the inside than std ones yet the same size on the outside where the inlet fanimold bolts up.
Any ideas what thats all about gents?

looks like a short-port motor. They\'re from the series 1 and 2 rx7s, and some of the others - IIRC they were also on the early twin dizzy 12a\'s. Limited on portability - ask Carl to see some other\'s attempts at going crazy on the ports

are you building him a new engine carl?

Personally i wouldnt go past mazda apex seals for any engine  - they fixed my problem after using aftermarket crap.

I remember RX Engineering running mazda 3mms in Pat longs Rx3 sedan which makes 700+rwhp and runs 9.1 through a supra 5 speeder!

I have used Mazda 3mm in alot of engines over the years, having done alot of material analysis over a period of about 10 years we now have developed our own apex seals, they are really tough,we have detted engines to extreme levels and had no breakages, but have broken corner seals instead. They are very kind to the rotor housings too.

I did not say that we have done more research than mazda.

If you think about it Mazda have done most reseach to make a seal that is both cheap for the bean counters and runs totally stock engines reliably which are incidently made by a third party and not Mazda themselves, also their research for racing has seen them use ceramics made by third party\'s.

We still use Mazda seals for certain stock engines, but use our own for modified engines.

Nothing happening
Tidyed the garage up and promptly tripped over and sent 3 new ratchet tie downs fling into a bucket that was there. The down side is that the bucket was full of engine oil from 2 scrap engines and the 145bhp race engine.

I love the smell of freshly cut fibreglass as I widen the wheel arches. Also been working on a new throttle set up. Nowt wrong with the last one just a bit untidy.
I have also just entered the Abingdon Carnival on 12th June.
Its 2 sprints in one day(we normally get 1) and the couses are 1.8 and 1.4 miles long. Not that technical but very fast. So long as nothing falls off

Been out testing today at a secret venue near me. Also there was a Metro
 6R4 and a 250bhp Vauxhall powered westy.
Concentrated on getting off the line quickly while minimising wheelspin and getting it to turn in without understeer. Both of which were achieved.
I cannot publish the times and venue due to certain implications this may have. I have been there before for an official event some years ago.
I put in a couple of tidy but conservative runs that I thought were not being timed.Given that it was by stopwatch so not 100% accurate i will say that there was a big gap between them and me.I am a bit annoyed really given the amount of time and cash that has been spent on this car(not much really,in fact a lot less than some may think) that the gap was as big as it was.5 seconds was the difference

The test day at abingdon produce some impressive results today.
It was damn hot which is about the norm for that venue and very dusty and slippery.
I decided to test the level of grip at the first corner and promptly spun it around.Thats good as i know know how much to push it on cold tires which is what we race on anyway as we are not aloud to warm them prior to a run.
I also had an oil pipe come of that goes to the catch tank.No drama there except the oil went on my visor and i couldnt see jack.
There were a couple of visits to the grass and I broke the exhaust which finished me for the day.
Was it quick???
Ask the lads from silverstone with the Group B Rx. They were there also

I should elaborate. Very twitchy of the line and I have to be carefull so I dont keep it wheelspinning up into 3rd.
Its very nervous through corners and its not like the 1st gen where the chassis would soak up some of the body roll. I have to be very presise with this and I am having to change my driving style accordingly.I am in class 11 at this event http://www.abingdoncarnival.com/2010_SPRINT_FINAL_INSTRUCTIONS.pdf and I start at number 140.
I know where I want to finish but so long as I can come away happy with my progress in the car than thats good.
The next event after that is a sprint at Brands Hatch and also hope to go to the Jap finals again this year to beat my 13.4 and then also get UK fastest n/a. Also got a sprint in October and this will be max attack and go for Fastest Time of the Day

After all the trials and tribulations of the last 24 months it finally came good yesterday. But I had to work hard for it. A big entry list of over 120 competitors with nissan GtR,porshe GT3,EVOs etc.
At the Lunch break i was 3rd in class 1.3 secs behind 2nd in class and 2 secs behind 1st in class.
After lunch we changed courses to the faster layout with big sweeping bends,a chicane and a very fast left hander to the finish. This obviously suited me a little better and I closed the gap on 2nd down to .9 of a second at the final results but the guy in 1st opend up a bit.(he was drining a LMP car)
So end of day saw 3rd in class and 14th over all beating my previous best in the RX7 by 8 seconds.
We now have a bit of work to do on some bits and pieces befor the next outing.

Taking the car out this weekend to a sprint at Debden Airfield nr Cambridge on Sunday. Its a top venue with some very fast corners. There is 100 entries so if I can get in the top 20 thats good enough for me as I am saving the car for the following weekend at the Eelmoor sprint Nr Farnborough.
Not much done to the car except some new wheels for the new wet weather tires and the rear arches have been reprofiled to tidy it up a little and to cover the 10" wide wheels. Lets hope it fits on the trailer.
Lets hope Black Betty does me proud

Black Betty did me proud
After the practice runs I was 1st in class and 12th overall with a 69.12 but practice does not count
At the start of the 1st timed runs it started to rain and it was to late to change to wets and ended up with a 73.40( all you drag racing guys would have packed up and gone home)
Then it really chucked it down and there was standing water and on one of the straights a small river running accross the track. Now on ex Formula 3 renault wets I set of to "get a time"
70.14 was the result to take me to 1st in class and 5th overall. Nearly as fast on wets as the slicks. And behind me was the odd pilbeam and reynard

Roll on next sunday

I need to keep the cycle wings on(part of the rules)

The wheels and tires are (F) 200w 13" dia
                                  (R) 235w 13" dia

I have driven it in the dry also and I think its better suited to the wet at the mo(something that we will work on)
It looks like it will be fine for this weekends outing so we will see how we go
Title: Rotary in a Westfield???
Post by: kiwimazda on October 11, 2010, 10:35:12 PM
Not a good day yesterday
I set my fastest time on the 1st practice run and on the second run I introduced the car to the trees at 100mph. Luckily I found a gap that was big enough to go between 2 pine trees that have written off 2 porsches in the last 3 years.Just a couple of scratches on the car and I nearly swallowed my seat with my bum.
The first timed run was good enough to put me 2nd in class and 4th overall for the day as it went even further down hill from here. The last three runs saw a spin into the infield as the car understeered badly and then an over shoot on a corner that promted a very angry 360 to get me pointing in the right direction.
The thing with sprinting is you have to get it right 1st time, there is no room for error and while it caused some( a lot ) of headache yesterday its good fun when the presure is on to performe....just like the last run of the day.
I was and still am conviced i could have won the day outright. The track temp was dropping and I decided on a risky move and put the wets on.These things are the dogs dangles and are very very sticky and as its a low corner speed venue I was hoping that they would not overheat in the dry but give me some good bite out of the turns.
I was right, good start line grip and carrying loads more speed upto the spin and overshoot corner, with those negotiated and dispatched quickly I was off up the rest of the course(you can tell whats coming) At the corner with the trees I was fair going for it and I simply over did it but this time I hit a tree. I thought there was no damage but looking at it to night, one of the suspension arms is bent(£150) bent end of  quick rack(£300) and cracked bottom of shock(£200):( I am placing an order for it all tommorrow as I will be at shakespeare this saturday.
It was the right choice to run the wets but the wrong choice to brake so late.
I do have some in car footage coming in the near future so will get it up on here

Never never ever again.
I got up this morning and thought why not. The car was already on the trailer and rather than unload it here I thought I will go to Shakespeare.
So I set off at 7 and got there just after 9am, unloaded and punctured one of the skinny tires I put on the race car so it fits on the trailer(it caught on a piece of steel I have been meaning to "trim" for months..Thats the second tire its claimed in 2 months:Grrr:Grrr
Scrutineering was no probs and then wait wait wait while they faffed drying the track.
At around 12.30 we finally got moving and I am thankfull that I was near the front of the Q. I took it very easy as I wanted to see what the track was like and without trying ran a 13.5
I gave it a quick once over and rejoined the Q just in time for it to start raining again. The time was now 2.30 and as it takes 45 mins to get the car loaded up I decided to call it quits as i didnt know how long the track drying process would be and with a 2+ hr drive home enough is enough
I got home about 6pm and set about taking the car off the trailer and....that peice of steel claimed another tire:Grrr:Grrr
I am confident that I could have got into the 11s but we will never know as I will not waste my cash for that malarky again. Total cost for fuel and entry to Track and RWYB and a burger etc was just over £100. I can enter a sprint for less than that and get 10+ miles...and drive in the wet
Also for the amount that they charge throughout the year and revenue that shakespear get there operating costs must be damn high so as not to be able to re invest in the facilities. I honestly thought they were kak.My opinion only
So thats it. It now definatly goes away for the winter for new 4 pots and maybe maybe a new gearbox and some carbon fibre

What a busy day. Managed to get all things done for the boss and get away early enough to get the race car over to a mates work shop where it is to spend winter. This is to give us a bit more room to strip it to a bare chassis and put in some extra strengthening, get it all sand blasted and repainted. These are things I wanted to do from the word go when I got the car but it just never happened. Also getting all the body work pianted professionaly this time round as spray from a B&Q(other brands are available) can only just looks good from a distance.
Now its time to get stuck into the Nova rally car that is in my garage to get it ready for a few events over Xmas. I wont be in the navigator seat this time round as its just not fast enough so I will be looking after the running of the car on events and hanging around the burger van

I have spent a little cash and upgraded the front suspension area. The new components are
2 x Ally uprights
2 x Ally hubs
2 new vented and cross drilled discs
2 x Carbon fibre front cycle wings
2 x wings stays for same

The geometry is a little better on the aly uprights than the std cast cortina ones and the ally hubs will reduce the rotating mass(albeit ever so slightly not that you would notice) But it all came as lovely package deal at the right price.

I just got some fully rose jointed front wishbones.
They wont help with theset up a noticable amount but IF I do have a crash it will break the rose joint befor it rips the locating points out of the side of the chassis and or bends the chassis.

Its been a busy day.
The final fit on the new body work was done and its all finished in that area. Just have to bleed brakes, wheel alignment and weld a small bracket to the chassis that holds the front brace of the roll cage similar to a "Petty Bar" on NASCAR cars.

Really looking forward to 10th April now:cool

Things have gone from good to bad in an instant.
Work has now gone absolutly mental and I will be working every day now inc sats and suns inc saturday before the event. The car has to go to TP Services for the wheel alignment and brakes but I also need to be there for that but have to work. On top of that I will finish work on tuesday at 5, jump in the sheilas car and drive direct to Exeter to collect some wheels and then home again. Mad yes!!
So here was me yestarday thinking that I have plenty of time for a change and now its gone pear shaped. Its going to be close as to wether or not its going to be ready. I think its going to be one of those paint drying moments on the first practice run:Hammer

We were all taken by surprise with the skyline. Not so much more power for me but better handling.
Practice 1   Off road excursion brake imbalance
Practice 2 Understeer
Timed 1    Understeer
Timed 2    Understeer
Timed 3    Understeer/ditch/ tore hole in sump game over for the day
Timed 4    Had a beer and watched

The general opinion is that my car(which "I" own and built) is/was the fastest there in a straight line. In fact many peeps were quite astounded by it.

The sump has been repaired and will go back on some time this week. The car is then off to a company who I cannot name for now who set up BTCC cars, GT cars lemans cars to get the understeer issues sorted. We also seem to think that the ttracking relation between the front and rear is a bit like an indy car. The company will put it on thier rig and do the corner wieghts, dampers, springs, alignment etc. This will give me a base to work from with data to fall back on if my adjustments do not work. I can just go back to the base settings and start again.
When I pick the car up its off to abingdon for some private testing to try some things out before the carnival sprint back there in June.
All in apart from the issues on Sunday I am very happy with it and it looks good for moving up to where I should be in the finishing order

Title: Rotary in a Westfield???
Post by: kiwimazda on April 15, 2011, 08:26:03 PM
I cant do track days now. Noise is an issue as mine comes in at 108db static and my fuel tank is only 5ltrs so I wont get far.
At least with the session at abingdon in may its a sprint course and I can go as many times as I like so will make adjustments between runs. Plus its good to go max on cold tyres and brakes as thats what we get at sprints.

108db

i thought they had noise limits on sprinting events,  obviously not!  I found increasing the wedge,  ie raising the rear and lowering the front made big differences with understeer.

110db static for sports and libre cars unless its notified in the supplimentary regs hence the reason I cant run at goodwood circuit with Rob Farley.

And yes they are going to look at my wedge. Probably take most of my wedge but I will get some more from the boss the following week

I tryed to get the sump back on yesterday and as much as I like gravity to keep us on earth, when you are working under the car I wish gravity could be switched off. Try juggling, sump, windage tray and pickup while trying to get bolts in and cetralise it all. It just was not going to happen.
So engine will be out in about half an hour. This is ok as we can also now helicoil the damaged threads from previous attempts by others.
So the plan is to get it out in a bit. Then down to the auto factors for the kit. BBQ and then Tony from Top Performance Services (shameless free plug for Tony) will pop over to give me a bit of help to get it all back in the car tonight.

Engine is out. It might be a kit car with detachable panels everywhere to make it "easier" but never again will I do it by leaving the gearbox in. I will take the box out now just so I can line it all up easier when it goes back together. Might put the MX5 box in while I am at it;)

I took the westy to a susoension set up specialist yesterday. They are doing a friendly for me in between jobs and are going to set the car up with wheel alignment, cornerwheights, damper dyno and setting and anti roll bar set up. When done it will be near as damit and will only require a "click" either way on the dampers at the test session on 17th may.
But all was nearly lost. I arrived in due time and started to unload the car. When I was bringing the car off the trailer the crutch strap bolt snagged on the trailer. This often happens if the ground is on a slight slope and is easily rectified if I put the car in gear to stop it rolling away and then jack the nose of the trailer up a little to free it. Some one forgot to put the car in gear. I wont name names but if I could kick myself in my own backside I would. The car shot of down the slope towards the very posh house that has 2 rozzas living in it. I am running flat out after it and just as I got there my feet decided to have an argument with each other and I triped up sending me over the front wheel. I lande up side down twisted with one leg under the car, the other under the front wheel and me grabbing at the exhaust to try and stop the car from going any further. Very lucky indeed.
I am now severly bruised up both legs, shoulder right arms and my back looks like its been attacked by a cheese grater. If it happens again I will just let the black basterd roll away.:Grrr

I see. And I thought you were saying I had balls for chasing the car and elegantly throwing myself at it.

Now I know what the "Sprint Champion" bit in the sig alludes to...faster than a rolling Westie :D Sorry, I know it\'s wrong to laugh, but...thanks :god

I am laughing now. It must have looked quite good with my swan dive over the car.

Will try not let the new toy get away tomorrow

Somebody would\'ve got their £250 from Jeremy Beadle for that, if caught on video! Well done with the Rugby Tackle though! :)

Got a call yesterday saying the car is all finished and I am collecting on Tuesday. Then its off testing for the day.
They advised me that the corner wheights were all over the place, wheel alignment was shot and the dampers were about 40% out  in variation accross the 4 of them. I was then asked how I drove it like that.
Once finished testing on Tuesday its then up to Prodrive in Banbury to collect some of me engine parts and then home

The car feels much better. Very stable now in the corners. Unfortunately after 6 miles the gearbox called time and that was it for play today.

..."thats racing"... :(

Totally. The gearbox has given me 5 years of trouble free racing and when I got it, the cost was £75 inc a 4.8 cwp. The box itself was made up of rx7 and 626 ratios.(about the same as a mx5 i beleive). Its more annoying that its an engine out job to change the box.
But what box to replace with? I could use one of the 5 FB boxes I have in the workshop but I may do the same and toast one at the next event. I could convert to Type 9 ford with quaiffe internals but thats going to be around the £1200 mark. So I am leaning towards a Turbo 2 for now but I will do a bit more research.
Another problem that needs investigating is the smoke from the exhaust when bring the car off the trailer. There was a lot. So that could well be a rebuild also.
But I have been racing for 25+ years and I enjoy working on the car more than driving it(you have to, you spend less time driving than working on them)

Wow. That gearbox was pretty good. 5 years in racing is a long time. :)

Yep, TII box might be good idea. Coshwort/Mustang box(borg wagner t5) can take lots of beating too... :)

All going well(my first priority is to get the engine back in the car tonight with a new box) I will get the old one apart and get a picture of whats left of 3rd

Glad to hear the corner weighting and alignment has tamed the beast some :)

I\'ve a feeling that somewhere I read that the mx5 and fc n/a gearbox is internally stronger than a FB box. Maybe worth looking into? Be nice and easy with them all being type M.

i have yet to break a turbo II box with well over 400 bhp in the kit car and a FC.  You can get good sized clutches and they are easy to get hold of.  Much better than a type 9,  my cousin had a type 9 with quaif internals built by BGH Geartec and it broke with only 200 bhp from a red top and very lightweight car.

I changed the boxes tonight and put the one I used for the srpint championdhip back in the car.
I am still going to do abingdon on 11th june. The engine is smoking a bit now and I figure that I will just run it until it goes pop. I have some PP inserts now and can start getting some things done for the PP that will go into the LHD car

Steve-A, yes i have heard(from somewhere)that FB box is modified from Mazda truck. FC box is designed for FC and TII box is modified from that...

Kiwi, i really hope that there nothing wrong with engine. :(
Title: Rotary in a Westfield???
Post by: Steve-A on May 20, 2011, 10:31:50 AM
I don\'t know much about the truck but I do know that the RWD 626, FB rx7, 5 speed mx5 and FC egi boxes are all effectively the same. They have different ratios in them and different housings on them but the layout is the same and the individual ratios and the housings are interchangeable.

The turbo II box is a new design all together.

I\'m just sure I\'d read somewhere that the gears themselves from the EGI box or mx5 box were stronger than the FB/626 boxes.

I now have a standard box up behind the smoky engine and by tomorrow night it will all be hooked up and running again. I don\'t expect either box or engine to last long at the next sprint on June 11th. But I have to go as there is a good chance of a first in class and top 10 finish.

Good luck. :) I really hope that engine or gearbox wont break. And you will at the podium. ;)

Btw, you dont know yet whats wrong with the engine...? :(

There seems to be a lot of oil in the combustion chambers. I was going to peplace this with a PP so its no matter if it goes pop. It will no doubt be the most impressive thing it has ever done.

My final instructions for the sprint at Abingdon airfeild on 11th june arrived today.
There are 4 in my class and a total of 130 entries.
If I can make the top 15 overall then thats good and at worst 2nd in class. I am up against one of they guys who got me last year so I must try harder. But this could all turn to poo if the standard box breaks:flamed

Hurrah the gearbox survived but what a difference over the C/R one. Its almost like its was missing a gear between 2nd and 3rd.
The day went well but had a couple of issues. First up was the mandatory noise test and after 7 years with a mazda engine they finally got me and it tested at 115db(10 over the max allowed limit)
So I took some packing out of the rear silencer and tried again. Bingo, 108db.
Fuel pick up was the next problem and it wouldnt with less than 1/2 tank which is bizzare as the pimp takes the fuel from the bottom of the ally tank. So after every run it was top up with petrol. Just as will it only hold 15 ltrs or I would have been dragging extra weight for nowt.
So end result was 2nd in class and 13th overall out of 130.
I compared times to last year and after all the development and new parts that have gone into the car iy would seem I have been wasting my time as I was faster last year at the same venue with the same track conditions. The car now handles better, stops better and I had better tires this year so somethings not right there some where. I think I know where it is, but so we will do a bit of looking to find out.
But thats it for this carand its a big relief to have not crashed it big style.(that could give you an idea as to why I am slower this year)

How much top end and acceleration have you lost with the areo ? Could it be a case the car can now take a it bit more grunt in the engine dept ?

Sounds like a really good progression though !

We could always do with more power.  I leveled out the rear wing to allow for drag on one of the earlier runs and went slower.
I think the issues are partly in my head in the fact that I can\'t be as fully commited in this car as i was in tje fb. I dont seem to have gelled with this car as much as i would have liked. Yes I am quick but not as quick as i want to be. Also my mind is now on rallies. Yesterdy wad £140 entry fee and we got 8 miles. Todays rally is £240 entry for 80 miles. I know where I would rather be and thats where my lhd fb comes in

i think thats more like it ^^^ as the TII box is totally different to an FC EGI which is more like the FB.

Is the engine down on power Brian?  also, are you going fast enough to use all that aero?

Congrats! :) Good to hear that everything went "ok". :) Thats rare in racing...

Hmm. Want to be faster? :) More practise. ;) or more agressive driving...
Title: Rotary in a Westfield???
Post by: kiwimazda on June 13, 2011, 06:28:00 AM
Plenty fast enough for aero. The last corner on one of the runs is flat in 4th. I dont know how fast that was but I nearly had a wee.

As far as being more aggressive. I tried both and fastest is smoothest. With the FB I could really throw that around and it suited my driving style.

Its not that bad the result as after 8 miles I was only 1.6 secs down on 1st in class. I was up against a man a car that has 15 years experience in that car alone and has rear engine with 300bhp, massive torque curve( I saw the papers) flatshift sequential box, ohlins. You name it, its got it.
So to be that close is prettey good.
I am not making excuses. I did the best I could on the day with what I had.
And the best bit was the marshalls who came over at the end of the day and said thanks for the noise, It was the best sounding car out there.
One went to say that I couldnt be seen as I came out of the last chicane on the run to the finish. But they could hear the gates of hell open just befor I came into view. Love it.

Peter, kiwimazda\'s rotary\'s a bridgeport engine( more troque at mid rev) and it\'s sound lots sharper that a PP( mine\'s one was a PP engine;))
if you came into scottish scene about 15 yrs ago, mine was once a Bridgeport engine.. but you\'ve heard  it at the right time on august 2010\'s british championship sprint at Kames.
wonderfully sound.... god!,I\'m missing that car very much......happy days.. Brap brap brap!! and no turbo hits;)

Anyways, good job Kiwi :)
