Title: Under bonnet insulation ?
Post by: neil_jdmr on June 26, 2009, 12:48:22 AM
I have under my bonnet, as in attached to the underside, like some sort of insulation. I guess its been a factory fit item but im guess this is doing nothing except trapping heat in my engine bay.

Anyone know anything about this stuff?. I mean when mazda rotary engine\'s had such major issues with heat why would they fit soundproofing/insulation stuff to further enhance the problem ???

So do i rip this .... out then ?

When you weigh up the pro\'s and con\'s for a standard car it\'s better with it. As you average buyer of an rx7 when new would have wanted cabin noise to be low.

This insulation is also there to protect the underneath of your bonnet from the localised heat from the turbos etc. I have taken mine off as it was falling apart but may get some of the shiney stick on sheets of it to stick on and help reflect the heat back down. But as was stated it does look better and cleaner with it off.

I also took mine off when I had my stock bonnet cause it was very tatty.  Didnt notice any ill effects, just mabye a tad more cabbin noise.

All I was worried about was maybe transferring all that turbo heat up thru the bonnet and affecting the colour which never happened in 2 years of everyday use :)
