Hi,
my gen 1 is booked in for MOT tomorrow and guess what - its just got a huge squeek/squeal from the front when started. Thought it was a belt but no. Its not altenator either. Its had a squirt of WD40 and initially thought it had gone but came back with a vengance. Car has been laid up for a couple of years but has been regularly started over the last few weeks with no issues.
Soud is like a loud bearing rather than a grinding water pump.
Any thoughts?
Bill
can you pin point where its coming from. A tip, get a long crewdriver and put your ear to the handle and the tip on things like the alternator, water pump, crank pully etc minding the viscous fan, the screwdriver will act like a stethscope and help you pin point where its coming from.
Or, remove the alternator belt and see if it still does it. If not, then its the water pump or the alternator, if it does then it may be the engine but it sound unusual. Dont run it for long without the belt.
Thanks,
I was heading in that direction , Altenator sounds OK. I am not used to the rotory engine so dont recognise the sounds yet. I hope it is the pump. Just cancelled my MOT for tomorrow. Will give it a go tonight.
Cheers
Bill
It could well be that you\'re fan is shot and the clutch is keeping it running all the time - does the screeching start around 4k rpm?
screeching starts straight away as soon as the engine starts - its very loud.
I have thought of a way to test it. I have another good RX7 with 29K on it. I will try the pump out of that one and and put a new one in the good car if it is the pump.
Is the pump a big job on the rotory? I have done them on standard cars before.
Thanks
Bill
Rotary even!
Started engine again to confirm no belt slipping. Removed the belt and engine starts with no noise. Altenator spins with no noise. Waterpump turns with no noise as well?
Will change the pump tomorrow and hope for a cure.
Anyone know best place to buy a waterpump?
Cheers
Bill
I think they still do it as a blueprint part at any good car parts suppliers.
Shaun
Although you may need to talk to clive (mazdarotaryparts) for the gasket !

Thanks all for the help. I ordered a pump from Jimmys rx7 ( £140). Turned out it was not in stock but they could get me a pump in 4-6 weeks for the same price from Mazda. I have ordered one from the USA ( ebay on line shop waterpumpwarehouse 98 in stock.) approx $80 delivered, so went for that one.
Blue print no longer supply the pump
Will let you know what the new pump is like when it arrives.
Cheers
Bill
Got my pump at last...26 days delivery from USA - quoted 7days - Waterpumpwarehouse - ebay. Pump was a GMB made in Japan part number 145 - 1180 came with a gasket. $38.85, shipping $39.50 UK tax and international handling £11.00. fitted no probs and seems to have cured the problem. Old pump did not have any grinding or movement as per usual issues. MOT on Tuesday AM...
Thanks for the update Bill. Have put the supplier and part No. on paper into my FB locker.....a bulging drawer in the wife\'s dining room cutlery cupboard.....she just sighs politely now!
Good luck with the MOT Bill, post some pics up on the 1st gen section if you get a mo.
Will do - Will take some today.
Any news? How did the MOT go?
